Big Starts For Matsui
Kaz Matsui, eighth in the Mets' batting order, hit a home run leading off the third inning Thursday night in his first at-bat this season. It is the third successive season in which he has hit a home run in his first at-bat. He is the first to do so since Ken Griffey Jr. from 1997-99.
Date Opponent Pitcher Inning Outs Count
April 6, 2004 Braves Russ Ortiz First None 0-0
April 4, 2005 Reds Paul Wilson First One 3-2
April 20, 2006 Padres Jake Peavy Third None 2-1

I watched the game this morning; what a nice way to start a Friday. With selective fast-forwarding, I was able to watch it in about 90 minutes, finishing just before 8:30.

The fan who ended up with the ball gave it to Franco in exchange for a bat. Anticipating a call from the Hall of Fame, Franco said he'd send either the ball or the bat, but not both.

I have to believe that the player told Willie he was ready to go tonight.
If I'm willie I can't say "no you're not" unless I have the team doctor backing me up, and we simply don't know how that conversation played out.

Willlie can and should say "No, you're not" whenever he feels like it. That's why he's the manager.

"Carlos, I'm glad you feel better, but it's the middle of April, let's rest you and get an MRI as soon as we can." These are the things you say BEFORE putting him back in the game to aggrivate his injury.

Willie doesn't have a PHD, its gotta be the team doctor telling Willie when a player is ready.

I'm with Elster. Beltran shouldn't have played last night. Beltran supposedly felt tight before the game, which means he should have been sitting.

It's also reset the clock on the possibility for a retroactive 15-day DL placement. Instead of putting Beltran on the DL and getting him back on May 1, we're now looking at May 5.

Now, maybe he feels peachy today, or maybe he'll be out for a month and it won't make any difference, but IMO, little things like that add up over the course of the season.

Willie did the same shit last year, and it's aggravating.
