Jorge Toca Junior?

] METS GET INSURANCE AT 1ST

By MARK HALE

The Mets have signed Michel Abreu, a Cuban defector expected to provide some insurance at first base.

According to a baseball official, Abreu will get a one-year minor league deal and probably will be a minor leaguer for the Mets. The two sides came to terms on Wednesday, said Abreu's agent Bernie McGregor.

According to McGregor, the right-handed hitting Abreu whose first name is pronounced "Michelle" is a 6-foot-3, 230-pounder who plays primarily at first but also has played left field and third base. The agent said Abreu, 31, will have a chance to make the Mets likely as a backup or role player and noted that he was Cuba's leading home run hitter for four straight years.

Abreu defected from Cuba in February 2004, according to McGregor, who said the Braves, Rangers, Marlins, Angels and Red Sox also had expressed interest.

Abreu signed with the Red Sox last September, McGregor said, but the contract was voided approximately three weeks later.

Twice! Twice we get a chance at a "Mets Get Abreu!!" thread, and both times we fail. We're losing our edge.

I loved Jorge Toca; I was disappointed that he never became anything. He was a cult hero of ours in the Jorge Velandia mode. Maybe we just have a thing for Jorges. Although I never cared for Jorge Fabregas. I don't know.

That Globe article said he was 27, and it was run September 13, 2005. In the five months since, poor Michel has aged 4 heavy years, as the Post sez he's 31. At that rate, he'll catch Julio Franco by the start of next season!

.....are you telling me I can get away with calling a 230 pound, 6'3'' non french man Michelle?

Does anyone know what years he lead Cuba in homers?
