Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 I'll start: Vern Hoscheit, an incomplete site apparently put together by his son.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Always liked Vern Hoscheit. Besides the fact that to my ten-year-old mind, his name kinda sounded like a curse, he visited my baseball camp with Terry Leach one year. Don't know what I did with my Hoscheit photo, but I have my Terry Leach photo somewhere. Plus, he was a "bullpen coach," which was mysterious to me. You saw all the other coaches: Bill Robinson, Bobby V, Mel Stottlemyre, Buddy, whoever. I don't think I ever saw Hoscheit in uniform during a TV broadcast. I felt the same way about Rob Drumenhauser, who was a bullpen catcher for a few years around the same time.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 How does one pronounce Hoscheit. It always looks to me like "Ho shit!!!"
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 25, 2006 Author Posted January 25, 2006 I always had it at "HAW-shite."I want to see some Manny Alexander and Phil Mankowski sites now. At least a Harvey Haddix.

Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 That's some cheesy music when you open the Jerry Grote site.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Mookie Wilson.I've always hated this site because it belittles Mookie more than celebrates him.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 25, 2006 Author Posted January 25, 2006 Great. *62 iss a '69er.I like the drone on the Grote music.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 I don't hear any music. Is it a bagpipe?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 27, 2006 Author Posted January 27, 2006 Not a tribute site, but Ron Hunt's personal page promoting his baseball academy. While looking for that, I struck upon this, which is so not for the fainthearted.A dated Pedro page.
Guest vtmet Guests Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 http://www.davekingman.com although the message there says that dave is on break right now...
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 27, 2006 Author Posted January 27, 2006 I love that site, though the A's colors can only be looked at for so long.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Doncha just hate it when you fall eight feet off a ladder and land on a concrete slab while a 1 1/8" steel drill bit pierces your right eye and pops through the other side of your head?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 On UMDB, Roberto Petagine gets the occasional hit from this page:http://www.geocities.com/Athens/9505/leones.html?200628I couldn't get into it today; it seems to have reached its daily transfer limit. It looks like Roberto's page has grown too popular for Geocities.
Guest vtmet Guests Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Dumb question about Dave Kingman...when I was growing up, I thought that Dave Kingman was originally a pitcher but was converted to a position player because of his power and lack of pitching ability...however, according to his stats, Kingman didn't pitch at the mlb level until his 3rd season and that appears to be mop-up work...and I don't see anything mentioned anywhere that Kingman actually started as a pitcher...any insight?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 27, 2006 Author Posted January 27, 2006 He did some pitching in the minors, but his power quickly revealed itself and put him on the hitting track. It probably was a good call, as his approach to the game was never considered to be scientific. He did some mopup work in the majors, but never for the Mets. I recall once reading a report of tthe Mets were running out of pitchers in a game, and Rube Walker looking at Kingman."You pitched a few times for San Francisco, Dave. What was your ERA?""Four."At this point Rube just stared at him unblinkingly until Kong walked away grinning and mumbled, "...teen."Darryl, Kong --- I've got this soft spot for big, crazy, oversensitive rogues.
