Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 This account at the Snopes Urban Legends Reference Pages sums up most sides of the story.None of us, I guess, know, but opinions are interesting.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 I'm going to go with yet another option, a possibility that was floated on the Snopes page:It was a rumor that Gooden had heard, and he (or Klapsich) told the story as if he was there.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 Good. I added that. It's a pretty good guess, too.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 I voted for this:]It was a rumor that Gooden had heard, and he (or Klapsich) told the story as if he was there. When writers like Klap-trap write some stuff that's way out there, they usually attribute it to "anonymous sources."For him to cite Gooden, that may be his way of smearing both Mitchell for the deed (verified or not) and Gooden for telling tales out of school.Later
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 The "rumor" angle seems the most likely, I suppose... maybe Gooden really knew nothing of it, and Klapisch put it in the book just for the controversy's sake.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 Chassky (sometimes spelled "Chasky" on the internet) is now the marketing agent for, among others, Gary Carter and Gary Sheffield, as well as many non-Garys, I suspect.Meade is a former autograph hound now hated by many other (perhaps more exploitative, perhaps not) autograph hounds for representing players in dealing with the memorabilia market and helping them to drive up the costs. Carter even thanked him in his Hall of Fame speech. If you look at this Robinson Cano ball, it's got Meade's official hologram.I can't find his e-mail address, but if you write to him, I'm sure he'll give you his account if you are the hightest bidder.Mead Chasky Sports Enterprises Inc 7020 108th StreetForest Hills, NY (New York) 11375-4449Phone: (718) 575-9500
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 That's pretty ballsy (no pun intended) -- signing a ball that says "2005 Rookie Of The Year" when you're not.By the way... what does that post have to do with this thread?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 A brief bio of the only named living human witness (the un-named girlfriend is another) who could truly illuminate the record on this sordid tale? It's totally material to the thread!(I didn't notice the print on the ball.)
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 I had never heard about this incedent.I really dont know which way to vote.I always thought Mitchell was a nutty mo fo, more into drugs or bad stuff at that time than Gooden was.But this was based on nothing except instinct, or intuition, coupled with some of the rumours that were circulating about Mitchell then.He was one wack dude tho.The story seems just too out there not to be true, whole or in part. For the sake of keeping this rumour alive and well, Ill say he did it.
Diamond Dad Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 Love the story. Details seem exaggerated, but Mitchell being angry enough to decapitate the cat with a kitchen knife? I buy that.(Robie Cano was the YANKEES' rookie of the year -- a small detail)

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 Didn't read the Snopes account that closely. My bad.
Guest KC Guests Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 I always believed the story for whatever reason, I voted #4.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 I have no idea. No one does.Speaking of Jim Rome, did anyone else love it when Jim Everett smacked him around a little?
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 ]We tried contacting Bob Klapisch to see if could provide any insight on the story, but we did not receive a response from himIMHO, this is the obvious way to get more info. Doc says he didn't write it so ask the only other guy who may have.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 I wonder if his refusal to comment tells us anything?
