ESPN:
The Braves and Red Sox have agreed on a deal that would ship shortstop Edgar Renteria to Atlanta in exchange for Braves third-base prospect Andy Marte, ESPN's Peter Gammons has learned. An official announcement is expected in an hour.

Wasn't he supposed to be the next David Wright or something, only without the great breakthrough?

That might make sense since not only did Boston just deal away their SS but they dealt his heir apparent - Hanley Ramirez - away in the Beckett deal.

Once again Schurholz makes a nice little deal which slides undeneath everyone's radar.

How much money did the Sox eat to make this trade, Renteria was a terrible deal looking back, I doubt Schurholz took it all on.

Have to disagree, FK. Looks to me like Schuerholz got taken to the cleaners. He just traded his best prospect for a 30 year old shortstop who, after one very good and one outstanding season in 2002 and 2003, respectively, fell off a cliff. He has been, at best, a league-average SS the last 2 years, and he's expensive. This move smacks of desperation by the Braves after losing Furball.

]I'm guaranteeing Renteria hits at least .315 for the Braves next year.

That seems like a safe bet since he's hit that high exactly once in his 10 year career.

My post was quite obviously a sarcastic comment referring to the Braves ability to sometimes plug Joe Baseballplayer in and get results.

But by all means continue to take such off-the-cuff remarks seriously. It's amusing to watch.

Elster,

I really don't understand why you insist on being such an ass to pretty much everyone here. Do you think it makes you look clever? It doesn't.

Sorry I hit you.

I realized I was being rude today after I responded to your post. My apologies. I hope I don't come off that way on a regular basis. The only person I really have major disagreements is Healey, and that's probably attributable to him only reading his own threads, so he doesn't respond when questions are directed to him elsewhere.

And I still do think my comment was obviously sarcastic in regards to the Braves getting mileage out of guys you wouldn't expect it.

Oh it could backfire for sure.
Marte is about a year younger than Wright and has been a half step or
so behind him throughout the minors (although he now has some catching
up to do).
It's just that whenever the Braves need a particular piece to their puzzle
they seem to come up with the right fit. If this one works it wouldn't be
the first time they dealt away a good prospect for a "now" fix and had it
pay off. Previously they've "given away" higly rated guys for Drew,
Hudson, Hampton, and others and still manage to keep on keeping on.
And - my main point - was that he always seems to make a big trade
which is preceded by almost no fanfare. Not easy to do in an age of
saturation media coverage.

from ESPN article:

"Boston will pay $8 million of the $26 million Renteria is owed for the next three seasons. In addition, the Red Sox must pay the $3 million buyout if his $11 million option for 2009 is declined."

deal makes a lot more sense now - Atlanta gets a starting SS for 3 years / $18 million.

Boston ends up paying $14 million for one year of Renteria, though they do net a top prospect.

Renteria or no, you've got to consider Wilson Betemit somewhere in the Braves plans, no?

That's a good point, Edgy . . .

I suppose he'll spell Larry at third and back up Renteria at SS, but you'd think they'd arrange things a bit more efficiently, given how good Betemit's been lately . . .

Posted

I could seem them moving Larry to first. They must not have been happy with Betemit's defense at short, because it doesn't look like they even considered giving him a full-time job there.

As for Renteria, his numbers weren't that far below his 04 numbers or his career numbers, so it may have been as much a case of inflated expectations on the part Red Sox as it was Renteria not playing well. Sure he could bounce back a bit, but don't expect a repeat of his 03 year. At $6M per, he should be acceptable.

i actually took your Renteria comment as a serious one, Elster...sarcasm is hard to read sometimes especially when its just a one line post with a "prediction" that could be taken either way.

if i had made a post in the "mets get delgado thread" that said "this is amazing, i gaurantee we'll win 95 games now" would anyone have known how seriously i meant that?

i'm not knocking on you, just pointing out an obvious problem with internet message boards, sarcasm is often hard to detect

With Miguel Tejada asking to be traded, anyone envision Boston trying to spin Marte to Baltimore?

Posted

It had better cost more than Marte, otherwise you're trading Renteria for Tejada! But I'd be stunned if the O's traded Tejada at all, much less within the division.

Could Tejada play second?
