Guest abogdan Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 3 years, $18 million. Wow, the market for relief pitchers is nuts. In a world where Scott Eyre gets an $11 million contract, I guess this is a decent deal. But in a world where you don't sign 38-year old relievers to three year contracts, this is nuts.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 It's amazing how much better the deals for Wagner, Delgado, and, dare I say it, Beltran are looking every day. But the Mets' ownership is completely brainless, as we all know, so there must be something I'm missing.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 apples and oranged with the position players, but this makes the Wagner deal look good and even the BJ Ryan deal look pretty sane.

At the end of the day, there is a budget and a roster. My team spent 13 million a year on Delgado and yours spent 6 million a year on Tom Gordon. Who did better? Would you trade Delgado for two Tom Gordons? The Phillies' new contract says they have the same value.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 It's not out of line with the other relievers' contracts so far. And Gordon did put up some great numbers the past two seasons over a lot of innings. Of course, the possibility exists that he emptied his tank, so caveat emptor. But there are still a couple of good relievers out on the market. Somebody is going to wind up with a bargain.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Roberto Hernandez is going to be interesting. At the beginning of the offseason, you'd've thought we could re-up him easy at one year/one mill. Now he's maybe looking at something like six mills over two if his agent plays the field right.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Which means you say "Thanks, Bert, but we've decided to go another direction."
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 I can imagine how frustrated the Phillies fans must be.They were so reluctant to offer three years to a 34-year-old Billy Wagner, but now they end up giving three to a 38-year-old Tom Gordon. If Bret thinks the Mets are inept, he should try being a Phillies fan for a few years.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 They also devliver their 1st round draft pick to the MFYs for the 2nd consect year (Jon Leiber last year).Of course they're getting ours instead so they actually make out a bit in the long run draft-wise.
Guest silverdsl Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Gordon was decent for the Yankees the past couple of seasons but if it was going to take a three-year deal to bring him back I'm glad the Yankees passed. I highly doubt he'll still be as effective as he is now at 41.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Well you've just inked his replacement, as word comes down just now that Farnsworth is officially in the Yanqui camp for 3yrs @ $17mil - having apparently turned down 4/$21 from Texas.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 3 years of Tom Gordon and Kyle Farnsworth: $35 million dollars3 years of Carlos Delgado: $42.8 million dollars (including tax)Being a Met fan in 2006 and extending a cyber middle finger to bandwagon jumpers: priceless
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Farnsworth is a juiced-up mongoloid thug -- he should fit right in.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 the drafr pick thing is interesting too, i'm ok with losing mine to sign Wagner, but to sign a 38 year old Gordon for 3 years? i might have held onto that 1st rounder.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Where's the source on the Farnsworth signing?
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 One of our primary division competitors just signed Tom Gordon to be their closer. That should be cause for celebration in these quarters.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Proof that Fransworth signed for the MFY's
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 I could've sworn that before this offseason the only 2 things Farnsworth was known for was throwing really hard and beating the piss out of people in brawls. Now he's an (almost) 8 million dollar a year set-up man? What a country.Actually, he did have a really good season (sans the meltdown against Houston). But he isnt the most stable pitcher around, and him vs. Manny (possibly) and Ortiz will probably lead to MFY-ExplodyHead syndrome.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 What an unbelievable market for so-so middle relievers. That's it...I'm teaching my son to pitch middle relief and not be that good at it.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Tanyon Sturtze should ask for a raise.....

Guest sharpie Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 ]Now he's an (almost) 8 million dollar a year set-up man? What a country. 3 years for $17 million is less than $6 million a year, not almost $8 million. Still, a lot of money and I'd gladly work for that rate.

Guest sharpie Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Salary review here is at the end of the year. Bean'll have to do some fast talking to get me that $6 million.
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 MK won the Rolaids Relief Man award on his Little League Fall Ball team this spring. He's the LOOGY of the future!
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Little League has Rolaids Relief Awards? They didn't even let us keep score when I was playing. So much for diffusing competitiveness and playing for the fun of the game.
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 No, but D-Dad coached the team, and he gave out the awards to all the kids at the end of the season.MK was great at stranding inherited runners
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Word has it that MK throws a mean resin bag as well.
