Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 mlb.com is doing a fan vote for play of the year.http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/awards/y2005/tyib/index.jsp(click the "play" tab to watch)Wright prolly deserves it of the all the candidates; tho Jack Wilson's play and Ichiro are also pretty awesome too.
Guest Iubitul Guests Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Thye didn 't even show Wright's best play, IMO...
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Yup. Looks like they limited nominees to 1 per team.
Guest Iubitul Guests Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 It looks like each team had it's own vote for the team's play of the year, and Wright's bare-handed catch won.
Guest Iubitul Guests Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Looking at all of those plays on the Mets site, the coolest thing is still Marlon Anderson blowing a bubble at second while going for his inside-the-park homer...
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Ichiro's catch is something else. Mounting the wall with one foot, then two, then pushing off with both arms, then realizing he's in an awkward position, then adjusting himself around to make the catch. The big leagues are filled with great athletes making great efforts to do great things (like Wright). It's the guys who have the presence of mind to make the adjustments in the middle of the great efforts that really blow my mind.Jack Wilson's play would make Rey Ordoez proud.
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 That Belliard play gets my vote-- just sick.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Actually, if you look at the Bloopers of the Year, the Mets have 2 of the 10 nominees: Pedro getting soaked by the sprinklers and Koo striking out on three pitches without ever lifting the bat off his shoulder.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 Guess its about time I took screen grabs of Wrights catches.Heres one, shrunk to half size.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 Ichiro's play reminded me of Ozzie Smith's catch where he reached out with his barehand when the ball took a funny bounce. Ichiro climbed the wall, realized the ball was coming at an odd angle, and adjusted. Simply amazing. Edgy is absolutely right, it's one thing to dive into the stands...it's another thing to adjust in the middle of what already would have been a spectacular play.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 15, 2005 Posted December 15, 2005 Wright wins.I don't think it was even his best play of the year, but congratulations. Hopefully the confidence boost will get him past any recurrance of the yips that plagued him early last season.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2005 Posted December 15, 2005 Congrats to David, he got one-third of the over 400,000 votes.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 Scrabble's take on the play:"I told him, 'Go play defense without your glove,' " Doug Mientkiewicz said that night. "'You'll probably do a better job.' "Appropriate comeback from Wright:"You should go to the plate without a bat," cracked Wright, "You would probably me more successful."
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 I voted for D-Wright a few hundred times. Or was it one hundred? I forget.
