Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 I went to bed after the sixth inning, with the Angels up 5-2. And during the night I had a couple of dreams (or one extended one) in which I learned the results of the game.In the first dream, I was watching TV, and learned that the Yankees had lost. The game-ending play was the pitcher catching a tricky pop up. But the pitcher was wearing a blue cap, so it couldn't have been the Angels. I figured it was probably a dream, so I turned on my bedside radio to WFAN, and Joe Torre was being inteviewed. He sounded happy, which discouraged me. Then the interviewer said, "Great job, Joe! Good luck in Chicago. You guys are going to go all the way."And I thought, "Damn it! Not only did they win, but they're going to go all the way! I can't count on the Kansas City Royals to stop them!"Then I woke up. I knew the thought about the Royals had to be from a dream, but I wasn't sure about the radio thing, which mentioned Chicago. I thought about turning on the radio again, but (being really awake this time) I was conscious of my wife in the bed with me, and I didn't want to wake her up by turning on the radio at 3 a.m. So I tossed and turned for a little while trying to evaluate whether or not I had actually heard that interview on the radio. It was almost 3 a.m., and Torre wouldn't be doing an interview at that hour, but it could have been replayed. And it was only midnight in Anaheim, so he might have been celebrating. In the morning, when I really woke up, I heard the happy news. And I was all the happier for having, for a while anyway, thought that the Yankees had won.I agree with Scarlett. It takes all the stress out of this year's post-season.

Not to rub it in or anything, but she's also not fooled at all by Jeter's girlish good looks--every time he does something, she calls him a showboat. She likes Hideki for his quiet competence, but I kinda do too, so I can't blame her. Last night's game rocked, by the way. I had my doubts the entire way until A-Rod ground into the DP. Karma, baby.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 Hey, someone has to say it..."The Yankees lose! Theeeeeee Yankees lose!"
Guest silverdsl Guests Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 I've been doing the whole wedding/honeymoon thing so admittedly I've been a wee bit distracted. So perhaps the reason I'm not beside myself today that the Yankees lost is because of that. Or maybe I'm not really surprised that they didn't advance further this post-season. The same problems that plagued them all regular season were all problems last night. So I guess I was just happy that they actually made it into the post-season given how poorly they played at various points this season. Most Yankee fans blame A-Rod for the Yankees failings. And hitting .133 is certainly pretty bad. But if not for him hitting so well all regular season they might not have gotten to the post-season in the first place. Not to mention this is a team sport so I don't think the blame can be placed on one player's shoulders. Every aspect of this team was a problem - hitting, pitching and defense.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 You have returned! Welcome back. How was the honeymoon?
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 I've insisted this for the last couple of years: it's the Curse of Luis Sojo. In August 2000, the Yanks feared that they weren't good enough to three-peat; on the day of the ill-fated Jose Canseco pickup, they reacquired Sojo from Pittsburgh, where he had signed as a free agent after the 1999 season.Sojo, of course, hit the 133-hopper up the middle off Al Leiter that gave the Yanks Game 5 -- and the 2000 World Series. Since then... nothing. It's the Curse of Luis Sojo.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 Nothing ... except two pennants, 3 ALCS appearances, and five divisional championships (including this season when they had no right to be in the playoffs at all). I'd take that kind of nothing for the Mets.

I posted a few pics from Aruba in the Member Promotion Forum. I actually watched all the games from the end of the regular season plus the first few games of this season from Aruba. Baseball is huge there.

Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 I totally enjoyed this final game too.Considering I have no interest what so ever in the Angels, both teams made this fun to watch, and the finale was good post season baseball and worth watching. So the post season unfolds, and it dictates itself to me.I want to see a Chicago-Houston World Series.

That would indeed be a great run in the eyes of fans from virtually any other major league team, but to the fans of Steinbrenner's minions (or is it million$) it is considered a disappointing stretch of failure. It is that feeling of entitlement by many Yankee fans that irritates me.
Guest Iubitul Guests Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 Great stat on ESPN this morning:Yankees 2005 payroll: $208 mil.Angels + White Sox payroll combined: $173 milAstros + Cardinals payroll combined: $168 mil
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 ]The Yankees might end up with the MVP this season, Alex Rodriguez, the Cy Young Award for Mariano Rivera, have the Rookie of the Year in Robinson Cano and the Comeback Player of the Year in Jason Giambi, and still they can't make it out of the first round of the playoffsI love it. But still, their fans are giving this team a pounding they may not deserve. "They have no heart because they lost this series." Well, they came back after being however many games under .500 and however many games out of first, twice. They had two of their free agent starters suck all year and another lose his all-star form. They had to give prominent roles to at least three rookies. And they came back down 2-1 in the playoffs and won game four. As much as I hate to say it, this team showed some heart. You can show heart and still make a lot of money.Yet I'm sure for the next six months all I'll here is how they aren't a team and are just a collection of all-stars and blah, blah, blah. Give it up, shit happens in a playoff series (see: 1988 Mets and 1988 A's).That's why I'll say it again: I don't hate the Yankees. I hate Yankee fans.
