A (Maybe Not So ) WATP

Traschell (and maybe Cairo).
to SF for Alfonzo
Rationale:
From the SF side - Fonzie has at least one more year to go on his contract. This will save them money to go into the free agent market next year. Cairo's deal expires at the end of this year.(He did sign a one year deal, right?)
They need pitching, and might be willing to take a shot at extending Traschell if he is ok. If not, they still save money next year.

From the Mets side - Fonzie's family still lives in New York (My cousin teaches at the private school his kids attend) and he still likes the organization. (She told me)
He isn't any worse a defender at second than Cairo, and has always been a high OBP guy- just right for the #2 spot in the Mets order.
His contract for next year is insurance against the kids not being ready yet, and if they are, he can provide a backup who won't embarass the team if he had to play more than a few games in a row.

Comments?

EDIT, I had Cairo on the wrong side of the equation.

I'd welcome back Fonzie, but only as a temp 2B guy this year and a backup/RH PH next year. Awfully expen$ive for that role tho.

I'll bet he'd come cheaper than a starting pitcher, even one with 2 months of contract left.

Fonzie's OPS over the last 3 seasons is amongst the lowest of starting 3bmen, and would still be amongst the lowest if he returned to 2b (not to mention he doesn't have the range for 2b anymore).

I think a legit SPer should be worth more than an overpriced player who has aged quickly, and would only be useful as a Cairo-type backup.

that being said, i like fonzie and wouldn't mind seeing him on our bench. But not for $5m/yr more than Cairo, plus giving away a SPer.

Trachsel will have to appear in a big league game or two to garner interest.

He allso has only an option next year, which I guess is neither here nor there.

That still can be done by the end of the month if they think they can include him in a deal.

Trax has an option for '06 that would have kicked in via any one of a number of complicated incentives - except that now none of them are going to be reached because of the injury.
So either the Mets pick up the option willingly (not sure if they can do that unilaterally) of he'll be a FA this winter.

Last time I saw Fonzie play 2nd (last season some time) he was ridiculously immobile. I mean he actually looked embarrassingly bad out there.

I personally think that ship has sailed.

We'd be committing $7M to next year's payroll when we currently don't have to. (Trachsel has a team option.) Not worth it.

I liked Alfonzo during his time with the Mets, but his prime appears to be a distant memory. Alfonzo comes with too high a price tag for his skills at this point in his career. I'd rather keep Trachsel.
