It is my belief that Tom Seaver has an effective 100-word vocabulary. If we could program it right, I believe we could install a machine in his place and get the same quality while leaving Tom free for other duties, say, for example, heading up the Mets public relations team.

But first we need to program it.

"Right down Broadway" would be my top pick for a phrase Seaver can't get through a single game without.

"Middle-in"

"barkin'" (meaning a tweak or minor injury)

Let's build this list--it's all in a good cause.

"Cripple pitch"
or
"He's a good crip hitter"

I've posted my reasons why I dislike those phrases before.

Not what you're looking for exactly but how many times does he mention that he garnered the highest percentage of Hall of Fame votes in history?

Answer: Too many.

"How many times do you see it? He gets ahead 0 and 2 and then starts nibbling, you cannot pitch that way in the big leagues."

"And how many times have seen this...you can't pitch from behind. I was always taught come in, get strike one, strike two. 2-0, 3-1 you cannot pitch that way in the big leagues."

"Look at that...just a meatball right over the heart of the plate. Big league hitters are going to be all over a pitch like that. You cannot pitch that way in the big leagues."
