Junior Spivey traded from Milwaukee to Washington for Tomo Ohka.

The 30-year old second baseman has an OPS of .682 in 182 AB this year.

The 29-year old Ohka has a 3.33 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. He is 4-3 in 9 starts this year and has a 2.83 K/9 ratio, a 4.5 BB/9 ratio, and a .63 K/BB ratio.

Ohka's peripherals are terrible, but he's been effective for Washington. Washington has claimed Ryan Drese (TEX) off of waivers and plan on starting him instead. 6.46 ERA, 1.72 WHIP, 2.58 K/9, 3.10 BB/9, .833 K/BB.

Spivey will apparently play 2B until Vidro returns from the DL, expected to happen shortly after the All-Star Break.

This is an absolutely baffling move. Our NL East leaders just got a little weaker, IMO.

Ohka wore out his welcome when he snubbed Frank Robinson the other night. Unless they think Vidro is hurt much more than originally thought, this is a strange trade for the Nats.

I dunno.
First of all, Okha pissed off Frank Robinson last week which isn't a very smart thing to do for job security purposes. And, as you mentioned, Spivey will play until Vidro is ready and will still probably get a decent amount of playing time after that since it's not known whether Vidro will be able to handle full-time duty.

Okha was scheduled to start tonight -- not sure if they plan on Drese being the permanent replacement or just a temp try-out. I don't know who they've got if not him.

From Milwaukee's standpoint it sounds like they're ready to bring up Richie Weeks, their #2 overall draft pick form 2 drafts ago who's turning in a good start at AAA.

I forgot about that.

Man, there are a boatload of players getting shipped for losing their shit. Graves, Ohka, Urbina . . .

Let's hope that Dunn does something to piss off Miley.

Speaking of which . . .

Milwaukee has been making good trades lately -- check Carlos Lee's RBI totals, the five major leaguers for Richie Sexson deal, and a good prospect for (chuckle) Dan Kolb. Ohka wore out his welcome with Robinson, but Milwaukee could do a lot worse than him as a fifth starter.

I'm surprised the Rangers would give up so quickly on a guy who was their ace last year. All they got for him was the waiver fee. It will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Jimmy Rollis signed to a 5-year extension for $40M, with an option for 2011.

Jim Brower released by San Francisco.

I wouldn't mind trying to sign Brower to a minor-league contract. The guy was pretty good the last few years, although he's sucked this year so far.

Tampa gets busy, releases Charles Johnson and designates Alex Sanchez to assignment.

The 28-year old Sanchez is currently batting .346 with a .839 OPS and 6 SB in 133 AB. His career OPS is .704.

The 34-year old Johnson is batting only .196 with a .610 OPS in just 46 AB. His career OPS is .762.

Sanchez will probably get traded--he's having too good of a season to not draw any interest. I suppose we could pick up Johnson, but with DeFelice, we' probably don't need him.

Don't know the circumstances this time, but Sanchez was released previously by Milwaukee for being a dickwad. He was also nailed by steroid tests.

From Lou..

]"He expressed the desire that he wanted to play everyday," Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella said. "We can understand that, but he wasn't going to do it here. He talked about wanting to go elsewhere, now he's going to get an opportunity."

Brower signed by the Braves, who battled over a dozen teams to get him.

No word if we were one of his suitors.

Also, Eric Gagne to the DL (elbow).
15 days for right now, but it's almost sure to be longer and that's only if there's no surgury required.

If it is ... see ya in '07.

Gagne was one of the freaks we were supposed to put a multi-player package together to get too.

The Dodgers had him throwing earlier this year before his bum knee had fully healed and he was clearly favoring it as he threw. Impossible to say whether that contributed to his elbow problems but that had to be one of the dumber moves of the decade in either case.
