Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Vladi Guerrero, signed less than to years ago, barely 19 years old today, gets released by the Mets without having ever so much as graduated from the DSL.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Speaking of graduation, IIRC, his signing bonus included a $50,000 academic scholarship.I wonder if he also never graduated there.Later
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 I'd imagine the Mets were paying for family influence on some level
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 27, 2025 Author Posted December 27, 2025 Back in the day, I could play a little baseball, and put more than my share of running in. But if you signed me at 17, hoping you'd get some version of the monster jock my father was at 17, you would be sorely disappointed.I would probably get released in weeks.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2025 Posted December 27, 2025 I wonder if this signing was done with an eye toward a free agent pursuit of his brother (half brother?) that never materialized.

You would get released one day sooner than me...maybe
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 28, 2025 Author Posted December 28, 2025 I wonder if this signing was done with an eye toward a free agent pursuit of his brother (half brother?) that never materialized. I think there certainly is a non-zero percent chance of that being so.I don't know how tight a pair of half brothers forced to share the same first name might be, but that sort of thing goes on in baseball all the time. I would guess probably not, but it is certainly hard to rule out.He is actually not the first (and possibly not even the second) member of the clan to sign with the Mets. Back in 2015, when Vladimir Jr. was considered the top international amateur prospect, the Mets were considered a leading contender to sign him. The were, obviously, beaten out by The Blue Jays, but were somewhat consoled to come away with his cousin, Gregory Guerrero, who ultimately peaked in High A.Of course, that is a lot higher than half-cousin Vladi would ultimately get.
