I went to last night’s Syracuse Mets/Worcester Red Sox game. Vasil was pretty good but the two homers (both by former Brave Vaughn Grissom) were no-doubters.

David Stearns prefers pitchers with ERAs over 10, so he probable saw too much skill in Mike Vasil, that's why he let him go. Vasil instead dominated with the Rays, posting a 5-3 record and a 2.50 ERA in 101 innings over 47 games his first campaign, while allowing just 74 hits.

It was the White Sox. The Rays couldn't keep him on the big-league roster and the Sox, who are as close to starting from scratch as a non-expansion team can get, were happy to take a flyer on a Rule V pick. His FIP was 4.32 -- he left an unsustainably high 83% of runners on base -- but he was a serviceable innings eater mostly out of the pen. Stearns simply discarded optionable arms like Vasil and Hamel before they really got a chance at this level, in favor of dumpster diving, and I don't get that either.
