I'm just glad he was able to come back for one last appearance.

Over these past few years, we've seen the last of what I consider the old guard slowly retire.

At one point, there was Verlander, Scherzer, Kershaw and Greinke, Now there's just Scherzer,, and he might be done after this year, who knows,

We might still see 200-win pitchers and never say never about the 300-win pitcher. Gerrit Cole, Chris Sale and Sonny Gray could all make a push for 200, Cole without much challenge and the latter two if they pitch into their 40s. But beyond them, big winners will be rare. No one under the age of 35 has more than 120 wins right now.

The Tigers wound up winning that game but Verlander didn't get the 'W'

The daughter also threw out the pre-game first pitch - to catcher J. V.

Verlander ends his career 10 Ks ahead of Max Scherzer [3,560 to 3,550] among 'active' pitchers. Scherzer's going to start today for the Blue Jays. He says it's not for the purpose of catching Verlander and, as mentioned above, he also hasn't said this is it for him (tho I suspect it is).  In 17 starts this year Scherzer did reach 10 strike outs once [10 Ks in 7 IP on 8/30] but that's the only time he got past 6 innings and his only game with more than 5 Ks so he's not likely to catch or pass J. V. even if that is his goal.

So, if the 2004 Mets picked one slot higher, would they have gone for Verlander, or were they locked on Philip Humber?

Somebody within the org said that Verlander was their #1 choice ... but of course everyone knows who the right pick is after the fact.

It was a weird year, in that the team was being run by a GM who was an interim, only he didn't know he was an interim, who would be replaced before the end of the season — and he was clearly on the tight leash of a PoBO/owner's son.

That 2004 first round had some great pitchers. Verlander, Jered Weaver, Gio Gonzalez, Huston Street, Glen Perkins, J.P Howell. Even Phil Hughes, Homer Bush and Jeff Niemann had their moments. We got Phil Humber, lol. Hey, at least he got us Johan Santana.

FUN FACT: Justin Verlander won more games for the Mets than Phil Humber.

His daughter, in fact, won as many games for the Mets as Humber.

We were watching of course, this was super sweet.
Earlier  in the game the Pirates’ Tyler Yates   had made a  similar ‘last  appearance’ so it was a pretty charged up game.

On top of all that, it was the home plate umpire’s last series before he retires.

I was really excited that our outfield ad was in view as he walked off.

Nice job by the Tigers on a classy farewell.
