I agree Sato is the most interesting alternative and also mentioned him upthread, although it’s not a guarantee he gets posted.

With all the caveats about not knowing what happens with the next CBA, I reject the premise that the $42M is a limited pool and that another $42M couldn’t be spent even if Bo stays.

But even if Bichette were to leave, and the team spends that now-freed money elsewhere, it’s true they don’t have to improve at third necessarily.  If he leaves, third base will become one of the 4 spots in the everyday lineup open for improvement (with first, second, and OF/DH).  Yet even with such open flexibility, I’m still not sure there’s a realistically available player I like more than Bichette for any of those 4 spots.  I guess Brandon Lowe is intriguing as mentioned above but I’m not sure he’s a better option.

I don't know what "$42M is a limited pool" means, let alone forward it as a premise.  I also don't propose that "$42 million more cannot be spent," but obviously, the team has limits on how much they want to blow past the cap, and how much of a penalty they want to endure, and so I am mindful of that.

My take is (a) the Mets aren’t likely to improve over Bichette at third; (b) thus, him remaining on the team is a good thing (even with a large contract), and (c) there may not be any way to improve how “that $42 million” is spent — but (d) there is of course plenty of other money besides “that $42 million.”

There is certainly a way to improve how that $42 million is spent.  Jared Young has outplayed Bo Bichette this season.  Luis Torrens and AJ Ewing have as well.  All together, they cost the team less that $5 million and a surfeit of being smart.

Bo Bichette can and certainly should improve over 2026.  But also, the same money, more wisely invested, can certainly make the team better.

I don't think it would be healthy to lock themselves into a single yes/no decision tree, especially since the ball is very much in his hands.

Well, the purpose of this thread wasn't to collectively decide Bichette's fate, but to get a temperature check to see how we'd feel, glad or sad, if he, of his own volition, decided to opt out and went elsewhere.
