Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 We've now had two baserunners who didn't run to second base on a force play. Mauricio yesterday, and Baty the other day. Baty was actually trying to run back to first.I think it's because of a heads up play by Francisco Lindor that made its way around social media. At least I think it did, now I can't find it. Lindor was on first base (I think in Toronto). A ball was hit right to the bag. Lindor faked like he was going to 2B (like he should). The first baseman caught the ball, tagged the bag, then threw to second. Lindor, only a few feet away, came back to first safely. If anyone can find this play, please post it here!Anyway. I think this play might have confused our young baserunners. Wanting to be like our captain, maybe they're trying to make a great play, but end up making just bad ones.Yesterday, Mauricio has to just run. Maybe they end up with the double play anyway, but make Goldschmidt make that throw.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 Yeah, it seemed like Mauricio thought the ball would be caught on the fly, and concluded his responsibility was to get back.He was screened from seeing it bounce, but it was well-ahead of Goldschmidt, so we have a bad read combined with a communication breakdown between him and his coach.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 Wasn't a good weekend for Antoine Richardson. He definitely should have been telling Lindor to slide. Definitely the Miller Lite Turning Point of the Game.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 I pretty much give Mauricio a pass there even though I probably kvetched a little in the IGT. Sometimes one justgets caught in no-mans-land and you're a dead duck.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2025 Author Posted July 7, 2025 The far worse baserunning from Mauricio was the play (I think Friday?) where he got deked by Lemaheiu into thinking the ball got past him and to tagged out.Ronny may not be the savviest player.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 Tim McCarver had an expression "Error of enthusiasm" caused by hustling but it not working out.I'm not sure if either of those Mauricio plays qualify, were just bad luck, bad baseball instincts or bad coaching.Later
