Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 Wait until you see this trailer for Torborg, the upcoming documentary feature about the manager of the 1992 (and some of 1993) Mets.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 Ok. We got it.He was a nice guy.Leo Durocher said "Nice guys finish last".Maybe he was too nice.Would his teams have won more if he had been tougher?Maybe the documentary will answer that.Later
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 This sounds Fair and Balanced
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 16, 2025 Author Posted June 16, 2025 Jeff caught three no-hitters, all by figures at one point employed by the Mets.Name those pitchers.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 L. Nolan Ryan has to be one of them.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 He came up with the Dodgers, right? Sandy Koufax must be one of them.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 16, 2025 Author Posted June 16, 2025 And he was part of some extra history both times, catching Koufax' perfect game, and the first of Nolie's many no-hitters. (I think there were 47.)
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 I recently heard Mark Kriegel, tough-guy Daily News columnist in the early 1990s, in the course of promoting his new Mike Tyson biography, say he wanted out of covering baseball then because he didn't want to “listen to fucking Jeff Torborg,” which instantly brought me back to Torborg's thrice-daily explainathons. When the same director presented his wonderful Last Comiskey doc, I was surprised by the warm sentiments expressed by so many in Chicago for Jeff. Something must've gotten lost from one time zone to another.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 I want to watch it just to see how Dave "Snake" Sabo from Skid Row knows him
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 16, 2025 Author Posted June 16, 2025 And I want to watch it just to hear from Jeff's enormous pro wrestler son, Dale "The Demon" Torborg.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 He doesn't seem like a subject that screams out a need for a documentary but, hey, whatthehell.Mostly what I remember from the Torborg era was that he became NYM manager just as the Mets/WFAN partnership was reaching its pinnacle. To take advantage of that symbiotic relationship an arrangement was struck where Jeff would appear on the station for a manager chat Every Day (around 3 PM IIRC). I think it was Lupica who quickly dubbed him 'Jeff from Flushing' for the fact that even the most frequent fan callers to FAN weren't getting as much air time as he did.And not that hearing from the manager is a bad thing but I think all parties eventually realized that this was too much of what was intended to be a good thing and I don't believe it was renewed for year #2.
