So what's left?

1. [CROSSOUT]Sign Juan Soto[/CROSSOUT]

2. Sign/trade for a middle of the order bat to protect Juan Soto (Pete Alonso? Bregman?)

3. One More SP. Preferably one that is less of a question mark than the guys so far. Manaea?

4. Rebuild bullpen.

I'm not sure they are looking for more relievers except on minor-league deals. It's currently pretty tight in there.

They will definitely bring in another starter by signing or trade. A trade also could loosen up the pen a bit.

I don't think that should preclude upgrades. Beyond Diaz, Garrett, and Butto, there's a whole lot of unknown/untested.

Well, Garrett and Butto are the only ones with options.

Others — Kevin Herget, Dylan Covey, Sean Reid-Foley, and Tyler Zuber at the top of the list — are indeed mostly unknown to me, but presumably the Mets knew them when they went out and got them.

The current AAA pack looks like Genesis Cabrera (lefty), Huascar Brazobán, Rico Garcia, Chris Devenski, Yacksel Rios, Dedniel Núñez, Max Kranick, Trey McLoughlin, and Grant Hartwig. Other lefties who could be looking at a camp invite include Nathan Lavender and Daniel Juarez.

I agree that another lefty could be coming, but I doesn't look like there's a lot of room for a broad rebuild beyond what they've already done. I mean, they brought Covey and Herget and the likes in with intention, right?

I've seen two articles* on Mets websites about the lineup now that they signed Soto.

Both have Nimmo batting cleanup.

Me no likey.

They need someone with more accent on the S in OPS in that spot.

I don't expect that Nimmo will be the cleanup hitter when Mendoza makes out the lineups.

BIG OOPS! Fixed.

Thanks.

[bLOCKQUOTE]You're the Mets. Sign Corbin Burnes. In for a penny, in for all of the pounds. It doesn't make sense to sign the best free-agent hitter we've seen in years, and then go cheap on the pitching side. I wouldn't even consider bringing Pete Alonso back if that might be an obstacle to signing a high-end starter. Signing Juan Soto to that deal tells everyone that it's World Series or bust, as it should be for the Mets. That means addressing the rotation, which has exactly zero guys in it you could count on for 160 league-average innings right now. Their main competition in the NL East, Philadelphia, has the best rotation in the National League, and they're going to make a big signing or trade at some point. The Mets can't stand pat and wait for it when they still have a clear weakness on the depth chart. [/bLOCKQUOTE]

It's a good point.

I don't know that a proven starter and Pete Alonso are an either/or, but I agree that the Mets should bring in another proven starter and not count on catching lightning in a bottle two years in a row.
