G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 Dodgers sign Blake Snell for 5 years, $182 million.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Only exceeded 30 starts in a season twice in his career. Lots of money for 23 starts per year.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 And $62 million deferred according to some and a $52 million signing bonus , so what's the actual annual hit ?

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 I think you mean Ohtani and not Ichiro.Deferring money is certainly not novel. And folks haven't tended to think it's smart when the Mets have done it.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Fixed. It isn't novel. But they seem to leverage it very well when balancing their budget to have several mega-stars on the roster at the same time.Later
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 It comes to about $160M in today's dollars. Five years is more than I'd give any pitcher right now, and I don't think Snell will give enough innings to justify that salary. Having said that, I don't like the early run on starting pitchers (Kikuchi signed with the Angels the other day), and I worry that will inflate the price for those who bide their time.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Serious overpay by LA, which has all the other FA pitchers and their agents salivating.Snell won't be worth anywhere near this, and is guaranteed to be injured at least 4 times during the contract.
Zach Thornton Syracuse Mets - AAA LHP On Sunday, the southpaw tossed five shutout innings as the bulk pitcher. He gave up 2 hits, walked 2 and had 5 strikeouts. Explore Zach Thornton News >
