I think you mean Ohtani and not Ichiro.



Deferring money is certainly not novel. And folks haven't tended to think it's smart when the Mets have done it.

It isn't novel. But they seem to leverage it very well when balancing their budget to have several mega-stars on the roster at the same time.

It comes to about $160M in today's dollars. Five years is more than I'd give any pitcher right now, and I don't think Snell will give enough innings to justify that salary.



Having said that, I don't like the early run on starting pitchers (Kikuchi signed with the Angels the other day), and I worry that will inflate the price for those who bide their time.
