Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2024 Author Posted February 19, 2024 Unfortunately, 23 and the Midwest League are incorrect. Hint: Check the hints. (You're very close with the 23, however). The record does have to do with the league and the number of strikeouts. So I basically just answered that for you...but what was the league?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 19, 2024 Posted February 19, 2024 Twenty-four strikeouts, NY-Penn League.

Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2024 Author Posted February 20, 2024 Bob Johnson is correct. As for #5, one might say it has something to do with his looks. And Koosman is correct—do you know what year that happened?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 21, 2024 Posted February 21, 2024 Well, it happened in 1978, naturally, as nobody but Seaver would start on opening day before that.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 25, 2024 Posted February 25, 2024 Five is Tom Seaver and ... I'll say ... Pedro Martinez.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2024 Author Posted February 25, 2024 Seaver threw plenty of one-hitters with New York and Martinez contributed, as well, however neither gave up their lone hits to an opposing pitcher. One might've been an early Met who was once traded for Nick Willhite and the other might've been an incorrect answer recently given by another member on a different question.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2024 Author Posted February 25, 2024 It wasn't Leach, but that seems like an obvious choice. The correct answer wasn't with the Mets long, but he did cram quite a bit of success into relatively few innings. In just over 22 frames one year, he had a 1.61 ERA.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2024 Author Posted February 26, 2024 New day, new hints added above.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 27, 2024 Posted February 27, 2024 Number 5b is clearly Jon Matlack. I'll go with Bob Shaw for 5a.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2024 Author Posted February 27, 2024 Matlack is correct. Bob Shaw is incorrect—the correct answer might or might not have been traded by the New York Mets to the California Angels for Nick Willhite.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 27, 2024 Posted February 27, 2024 Then you're teeing up Jack Hamilton for me.I was leaning toward him, but he felt unlikely as he wasn't one to finish what he started, even in an age where that was much more common. Also, the Mets used him more frequently out of the pen.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 27, 2024 Posted February 27, 2024 I think the current #3 refers to Jerry Cram, who pitched a bunch of innings (eight?) in that extra-inning marathon in 1974 that ended with Bake McBride scoring on a pickoff throw. Bob Murphy talked about that game all the time.I thought his record had been broken by a nine-inning stint, but that might not have been scoreless.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2024 Posted February 27, 2024 The pitcher pictured in question 1 is Miguel Batista, but I don't really understand the question

Who are the only two pitchers in Mets history to strike out the side on nine pitches?--originally posted by "Joe Rigatoni"4. The Mets went 9-1 in the first 10 games in which Ike Davis appeared. In those games, Ike hit .355 with a .548 SLG, one homer, 3 doubles, 6 RBIs, and 5 runs scored. It's a pretty rare feat for a team to do put up a 9-1 record in the first ten games in which a batter (non-pitcher) appears, now having occurred only 32 times in the years 1920-1939, 1952-2010. But even more rare is when a team puts up a 10-0 record in the first ten games a batter plays with a team. It has happened a mere five times in those years. And happily -- for this thread -- one of those five times was by the New York Mets. Name the batter who helped the Mets win the first ten games in which he played. (This question is through April 2010, I'm not sure if it has happened since then). --originally posted by "milladrive"5.
