5 Joe Foy, then, if not Otis?

OE:

Duh. I read the clues so fast, saw "famous for Amos" and guessed Otis. If I read it closer, I woulda noticed that he played in 1970, so it couldn't have been Amos.

1. Who am I?

Hint: Was an answer to a previous question in this thread.

Hint: Struck out once in Mets career

Hint: Played in the Mets system in 2002 and 2003

Hint: Played all of one game in the field with the Mets

to coaching with my goombah.

The year I was there was special for me

'cause now I'll always be let in somewhere for free

4. The first big hitter from the farm

Let go before my bat could do harm

[You'd] still see me around

at games across town

Traded at a moments spur

for a restauranteur

5. Just one season with the NY Mets

I led the team in all sorts of offense

I had broken my ankle 2 years before

I had a great season, but was shown the door

Some think I had a brother

But that was not true

People liked comparing us to the Alous

If you have the time, look it up, you will see

I even got some votes, for the MVP

Who you got in return, you didnt know it then

But he was a key part to becoming champions

I journeyed around far and near

That season at Shea was my last good year

There's only one Met enshrined in Cooperstown who has a Met doppelganger in name only -- Pedro Martinez. But the two Pedro Martinez Mets did not play for the Mets in the same decade. Or century.

I see where you're going, but we're not quite there. Note 'Omaha' and 'coaching' in the poem. The individual might or might not have been from Omaha and he might or might not have coached for New York.

The traded for a restauranteur and being seen across town hints for the current #4 point towards Ken Singleton, but he was far from being the first big bat the Mets' farm ever produced.

Singleton and Tommie Davis are correct, and the Hall of Fame the guy is in is Cooperstown. The other guy who shared a name with him played all of one game with New York. While you mull that over, I've replaced the Singleton and Davis questions with some new ones:

While "I got in a funk and then my career was sunk" applies to almost everybody, Cuba and 2006 suggest that #4 is Alay Soler.

4. I played just 11 games in the majors

That was the extent of my career

In fact, I played 15 seasons

In baseball professionally

From 1972 to 1986

I played, often internationally

He played mostly first base

And righthanded he threw

4. It didn't take long for the bloom to leave the rose

but oh that first year,

to such heights I rose.

It took a few years for the stories to filter out

I faded so quickly

I ended my time as a Yankee.

Number 4 is neither Swoboda or Allen. It might have been an outfielder who had one big year in New York. As for number 5, he came around about the same time as other pitching greats like Jeff D'Amico and John Thomson.

He was an expert at hitting triples in the 1990s, leading the league in that category multiple times. And he did return to NY as a player, in the Bronx, but briefly.
