The Mets have signed veteran righty pitcher Dylan Bundy to a minor league contract.

Probably no safer bet in baseball than betting against any starting pitcher being the next Nolan Ryan.

Dylan debuted like a house on fire. He started off at full-season A-ball at 19 in 2012. He threw 30 innings there without giving up an earned run, striking out 40, walking two (take that, Nolan Ryan!), and giving up five hits.



You don't want to get caught up in the moment and promote a guy before his time, but there are very few arguments to keep such a character down, and so he was sent to high-A, where he threw 57 more innings, followed by AA, where he threw another 16 2/3. He wasn't still throwing nothing but shutouts, but he continued to be a highly effective pitcher.



You know where this is going, but there in his debut season, the Orioles promoted him to the big league roster, where he helped them close out the season by throwing 1 2/3 shutout innings in late September.



That's coming on like a comet.



You can guess where that leads. Tommy John surgery the next season, and calcification of his shoulder in the following one, and he doesn't return to the big leagues until 2016. By that time, the kids that were thrilled to see his debut were already cynical teenagers, and when asked why they were so cynical, they pointed to poor Dylan.



He's had a perfectly mediocre career since then, even with some highlights, but his velocity is a distant memory. To his credit, he's stayed mostly healthy since his early-career issues, and his next inning at at AAA will be his first.



He might be the Orioles' Tim Leary.
