Time once again for This (short) Week in Baseball

One more day off for us, but MLB does tiptoe back into action with ten teams active today, highlighted by Dodgers/Giants (though at SFG -12.5 G this

matchup lacks the drama of last season) and a Yanx/Astros DH in Houston. Both those teams also have monster leads in their own divisions but claims

of AL supremacy and a potential October preview are on the line in these 1:10 & 6:40 games. Astros have a 3-2 edge in the season series.

Marlins are the only NL East team with a game today as they've got a one-off with Texas before heading to Pittsburgh for the weekend.

Braves will host LAA this weekend; Phils get a visit from the Cubs; the Nats ... ah, no one cares (they're in Arizona)

I think most are reskeds but a couple might have been original.

Astros up 2-1 in the 9th, are coming off three off days, and are turning to ex-Philly Hector Neris to close it out?!?!

And, shockingly, he blew the save .. alhough the BS is partially on his SS who passed up what looked like a makeable force at 2nd and then failed to even try to knock down the subsequent RBI Single.

At least make them earn it!!

I was being silly, when Torres Yanks won lucky games

the mantra was they battled.

That was also the go-to mantra for Art Howe following seemingly every NYM loss.

Jeff Torborg's Mets scuffled; Art's battled.

Currently 5- 2, top 3

Ohtani falling apart in the 7th in Atlanta.

3 runs in in what had been a scoreless game. Still no outs.

oe: and now it's 6-0 with Atlanta still batting.

How about an inside-the-park grand slam?

I'm a little confused by Duran just shrugging his shoulders and dropping his head after that ball came down.

I realize the leftfielder would likely have still beaten him to the ball, but make an effort and show some people something.

What an abject humiliating performance for the Bosox. Gurriel initially seems to be resigned to have flown out, but when he knew he was mistaken he busts it. Duran makes a mistake that's a nightmare for any outfielder but you see it happen sometimes. His reaction is to sit there. That makes the game 10-0, and Jays go on to score 18 more runs.

It was also a Big Game for the SHoX and the SHue Jays. Sox had a team they knew that they had to beat, at home, first game after the break following a disappointing first half. Their best guy was on the mound.

Jays obviously have one of the most dangerous clubs on earth but they started the second half also out of the playoffs and knew they too needed a boost.

Baseball being what it is, the massively divergent paths they begin on will probably end up less meaningful than we think. But geez, imagine how it feels this morning to be a SHoX fan or a SHue Jays fan

I was imagining how it feels to be Duran this morning waking up this morning in Salem.

Cora went to bat for his guy in the post-game comments, but man.

As bad as that play was, he could have caught it and turned it into a Triple Play and the Sox still would have lost by several touchdowns.

Stroman & Wheeler hooking up at [whatever bank] Park in Philly tonight.

1- Zip Cubs thru 3

Braves up 5-1 in a game that's somehow just in the 4th inning.

Cubs & Phils tied at 1 heading to the 10th and the clown car rules.

Alex Bohm's defense: the gift that keeps on giving.

He's fanned on two grounders in the 10th allowing the Cubs to put up 4 runs (and still batting).

Braves losing 6-sniffle to Angels. Not that I'm scoreboard watching in July.

(of course I am)

Goldschmidt & Arenado to miss StL's upcoming two game series in Toronto due to ... exactly what you think.

I hope the Cards lose both and then wind up missing the playoffs and/or division by one game.

It's a bad look for any team, but these are the only two guys not going? The two superstars? That's really bad.

Also: Cardinals reliever Johan Oviedo won't be going to Toronto. Not for lack of vaccination but because his passport is expired.

That's a bad reflection upon the assistant traveling secretary.

Even worse, what a week to have just traded for the guy, on my Baseball Staff Fantasy League, and because I thought he was a good pont-scorer in the "passports, tickets and other essential documents" category. I suck!
