Year One: Looked like a guy who had to give up the juice.

Year Two: Looked like a guy who didn't have to give up the juice.

Year Three: Looked like a guy who got caught on the juice.

Year Four: Looked like a guy they really didn't need.

Three-homer game in 2019, not a juicing year as far as testing knows.

On the one hand, Cano was the first player the Mets acquired post-PED suspension who turned out to be a dud. Marlon Byrd, Bartolo Colon, and Starling Marte (TBD) were all fairly good signings.

On the other hand, trading key prospects for 36 year olds coming off PED suspensions is always a dumb move.

Great swing and pretty decent second baseman, but well past his prime when the Mets traded for him. Diaz at least has been pretty solid the past 2 years.

Despite the elephant-shaped suspensions in the room, I was impressed by how many teammates throughout his Met tenure swore by this guy very specifically, citing guidance they found meaningful. More than once I mused privately — because it sounded too bizarre to say aloud — that Cano could have been a legit player-manager candidate during those intervals when the Mets were searching for a skipper (with the player part receding quickly and the manager part excluding weight-training supplement advice).

He also seemed like more of a mensch than I imagined when I watched him in action at the January 2020 FanFest. Up to that point, I wanted him to go away. I kind of liked him after that, at least until he tested newly positive.

If anything, Cano as a Met reminded me of El Duque and Hershiser. I forgot all about past nettlesome associations and enjoyed the best that his twilight had to offer.

Yeah, there was that persistent discovery of humanizing elements in the alloy of his douchearmor.

It could be annoying in a world that's easier when we divide the black hats from the white hats, but it's as it should be.
