Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 6, 2022 Posted May 6, 2022 Interesting Sideplot: Does the number 24 stay in circulation or return to the mothballs?
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Something in the middle. 24 is probably going to be treated like 7 or 8; it's not going to openly assigned, but if someone asks and has a good reason, sure, they can have it. As opposed to anything actually retired (or #5), which are not available.

If you want to argue about his time as a Met not being worthy of this honor think about his tenure in New York baseball.

I did not know that and it doesn't look that way from the way "7" has been issued, historically. On "24", I don't have a good feel for what might happen next, but if I had to guess, I'd go with how the number was treated just before it was assigned to Cano because given Willie's advanced age, if Cohen was leaning towards retiring "24, I'm guessing he'd have done it before announcing the retirement of Keith's "17, given the apparent urgency of the situation. That's all I got. I'm staying out of whether "24" should even be retired by the Mets in the first place. Edited May 7, 2022 by Guest

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 24 is Willie's number, not Joan's. I get the linkage, but each rates their own explicit acknowledgment as great New York National League figures.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Not to change the subject, as that rarely happens here, but does anyonehave that Jay Satan 666 classic photo anywhere? I thought it was on the kcmets server but couldn't find it doing a quick search.
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 I think Shamsky and Rickey would feel honored.
