The ageless knuckler — and the first pitcher the Mets ever faced in postseason — dies at 81, from cancer, making it seven Hall of Famers to depart the field in 2020.

Niekro was indeed a funny guy in a subtle way, and a deserved legend. I remember him not only screwing Mets players into the ground (25–14, 3.02, lifetime), but left their batters all screwed up for two or three days after that.

A heck of a competitor that was still well liked. Almost brought back women's baseball, too.

The MLB network is showing Niekro stuff.Met related stuff-- Ed Kranepool said Niekro' was the toughest pitcher to hit. Bob Boone said Seaver was the best he ever faced but Niekro was the toughest to hit. And poor John Milner -- shown fanning against Niekro as a Met and then some seconds later, as a Pirate.

He was part of the answer to the trivia question I used to stump Bill Mazur.

The question was:

"Who are the only two pitchers in major league history to have led their league in all of the following: GS, CG, IP, H, ER, BB, K, ERA, W and L (not all in the same season)".
