2001: Dozens of NYPD officers and hundreds of FDNY firefighters are killed desperately trying to rescue New Yorkers from a stunning terrorist attack.

Mets Players: "What an incredibly inspiring sacrifice. Let's wear the hats representing the agencies of the fallen, that their sacrifice will be honored and remembered."

Mets Management: "That's nice dear. Don't be out too late."

Mets Players: "Wow, that was an emotional experience. The goodwill of the hat gesture radiated throughout the city and touched hearts everywhere. Let's keep wearing them the rest of the season!"

Mets Management: "Wait ... did we actually give permission for this? Oh shit. There's going to be hell to pay."

2002–2019: The anniversary of the attack and the deaths of the noble responders approaches.

Mets Players: "We all said we'll never forget. We need to wear those hats again this season, if only on the anniversary."

Mets Management: "Not if you know what's good for you."

Mets Players: "Excuse me? Wait, this was a gesture of goodwill of that radiated throughout the city and touched hearts everywhere. It became part of our brand."

Mets Management: "Any change in uniform has to be cleared with the league office. Our brand is the Mets. Gestures of goodwill will be coordinated with the other 29 teams."

Mets Players: "Doesn't that feel, empty, forced, impersonal, and nearly meaningless?"

Mets Management: "We cooperate with the league office in this organization."

Mets Players: "Fuck it. I'm sorry, but we're gonna wear what we're gonna wear."

Mets Management: "I'm fucking serious — try me. You don't believe I'm serious, then talk to your union."

Mets Players: "Jesus."

Mets Management: "You have a game to play."

2020: A nation in distress is seeing dozens of cases of police officers using unjustifiable deadly force, usually against persons of color and other marginalized populations.

Mets Players: "We stand in solidarity with the victims. These are un-necessary tragedies and it's chilling to think that they are happening at the hands of the state, by the men and women paid to protect us."

Mets Management: "Know what we need to do this year? Salute the police!"

Mets Players: "Ummm ... ."

I thought it was MLB that didn't dig the hats, not Mets management per se.

Some background. Joe Torre didn't want them to when he was working for MLB and got pushback from Mike Piazza. My guess is because his beloved MFYS didn't want to do it first.

Here is the reason the out-of-touch asshole gave:
We try to keep the hats the way they are because every team could really have a legitimate reason to want to wear a different hat to honor something that happened in their particular area," Torre said. "And we just try to keep it consistent with the uniform.

IS it a Mets tradition? I mean, they had ample opportunity to make it one, but at this point, it's more like something the Mets did once.

Mets wore ‘em annually through 2007. MLB introduced r/w/b Look How Patriotic We Are Caps for all teams in 2008 and thereafter got tetchy about the Mets maintaining their thing.

This is probably a photo from last season as there's no Nike patch on Alonso's jersey top.

Also, it's a home uni and the Mets are on the road tonight.

From the last game prior to this one that the Mets wore first responder caps.

The teams observed a pregame moment of silence to mark the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Mets also wore hats from eight New York City departments that sustained losses that day, and a firefighter sang the national anthem.

Hernandez, sporting an FDNY hat, struggled in his first start since he gave up five runs and six hits over three innings at Philadelphia on Aug. 30. He traveled back to New York after that shaky outing and got a cortisone shot in his sore right foot.
