In light of yesterday's kneel by Dominic, Rob Manfred has (apparently) been trying to engineer a symbolic "protest" by the Mets, having them take the field at gametime this evening (7:10), before leaving in protest and returning an hour later to play, protest filed, but nobody hurt.

The source is your Mets GM talking dubiously about the enterprise on a (barely) hot mic. Got to turn it way up.

Van Wangenen looks like he could be simultaneously right and in a possible shitload full of trouble. Talking out of school about the the commish and Jeff Wilpon, if I'm hearing him correctly.

“And it would be really powerful if the players left the field under dark skies and then the grounds crew can pull a tarp over it right before it starts raining...and then, y'know, they could come back and get the game in.”

Brodie is in the wrong for the right reason.

Jeff is in the right for the wrong reason.

Or something like that.

Answer to my own question

NY Post: ... aspiring sports journalist Nick Albicocco stumbled across [the video] on the team's website as he searched for the status of Thursday's game.

“I found the video on Mets.com when I went to look for an update on whether they would play tonight,” Albicocco, a 20-year-old diehard Mets fan, told The Post.

“It was sitting on their home page for who knows how long. When I heard [Van Wagenen's comments,] I couldn't believe it.”

Unbelievable!

So, it ends with BVW throwing Jeff Wilpon under a tremendous bus.

Except that can't be the end, at all.

I mean, he could have said that he misunderstood and left it that that. "I'm now confident that scenario I was describing did not come from the commissioner's office at all, and for that, I'm embarrassed."

But despite most people's natural inclination to take flak for the boss, he just went and painted an X on Jeff's back. If you want to read the tea leaves, you might conclude that Jeff Wilpon is very much a dead man walking in the organization at this point.

OE: I've really got to stop mixing metaphors. That was four in two sentences.

God, I feel so deeply for Jeff. Following the impulse to protect yourself from looking like an idiot, thereby making yourself look like a much bigger idiot, is such a human trait. It's a death spiral of insecurity.

I feel even more deeply for the communications staffer or staffers tasked with helping (or "helping") on that statement, though.

But you gotta love the idea that BVW talks about how the ongoing conversation 'can never leave this room' and yet not only do they somehow not realize that it's being filmed as they're speaking

but that the clip then winds up being uploaded to the freakin' team website'!!!!

In a goofy crime caper flick that part of the script gets rejected as being too implausible.

Like Associate Bob the last scene in Demolition Man, Bodie announcing to the new owners it would be a pleasure to work for them.
