I guess I'm off a day. The pic is the 17th and that final piece came down on

the 18th. Always a day late and a dollar short ...

Eight years ago on the 16th was the passing of Gary Carter.

Both of those losses still sting.

The Carter death is still tough. He was a big part of my childhood. Tough to see him go. Plus how fast it took him. Talk about a guy who was full of life.

But for Shea, I might be the only here without that strong emotional connection. I didn't grow up in NY, so I didn't get there until I was already an adult. And when I finally got there I remember it being about as shabby as everyone said. I mean, it was amazing to be in the home of the Mets, but otherwise there was nothing great about it. I will remember taking each of my kids there for their first game, my son in 2007, and my daughter who just squeaked in under the wire as a 4 week old in August of 2008. But I was ready for the new stadium.

Having seen my kids grow up at CitiField, I already have a much stronger emotional connection to our current home.

I have a fb album of shots going out the Shea that winter with 3-year-old Lunchpail. Snow on the ground, this brown fake Brooklyn monument in front of us, and wrecking balls slamming into the big murals on the side of the building. Every seat ripped out and the damned uncomfortable steel box-seat rails cut up so Fred & Jeff could profit from the destruction twice over. It was aggressively depressing.

I don't mind the "new" stadium much as a place to watch baseball but won't ever get over the glee the org took in propagating the myth that Shea was an irretrievable dump they couldn't wait to hack into tiny pieces. They took the center field panel off the wall before the last game was even played.

I have (had) a page of pictures from that Sunday before the last piece

came down but couldn't find it. Maybe tomorrow ...
