Not that I'm aware of. I'd consider Posey to be the face of the Giants for as long as he wants it, Bumgarner's performance in that one World Series notwithstanding. I doubt seriously it affects MLB either way. That the Giants seemed to be OK with him pitching for somebody else (and a division rival at that) could simply be a business decision.

New York Mets: C

After losing Zack Wheeler to the Phillies prior to the start of the Winter Meetings, the Mets were going to need to pick up pitching. Brodie Van Wagenen found two options for the void in the Mets' fifth rotation spot, signing both Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha. Porcello, 30, is coming off a dreadful season with the Red Sox, but was a top-50 free agent. Wacha, 28, is also coming off a rough 2019 campaign with the Cardinals. But when he's at his best, Wacha possesses league average fastball velocity and a knockout changeup.

Who is spending the Mets money? Wilpons, Cohen, Brodie. Omar

Julio Teheran, six years running as the Atlanta Opening Day starter, is now an Angel (one year deal).

Mikael Franco, once Phiily's best prospect but only occasionally a good player, is headed to KCR

Justin Smoak, part of the '1st baseman's draft of 2008* heads to the Brewers on a one year deal. Previously toiled for KC, SEA, TOR

* 7 of the first 23 picks were 1st sackers, something I'm sure never happened before or since

3rd overall = Eric Hosmer (KC)

7th - Yonder Alonso (Reds)

11th - Smoak (TEX)

13th - Brett Wallace (StL)

17th David Cooper (TOR)

18th - Ike Davis (NYM)

23rd - Allen Dykstra (SDP)

I'm probably wrong, but I feel like he dominated the Mets the first few years of his career, but the script was flipped the last few years.

He's looked done every year for maybe four years, but he usually nonetheless has been able to grind it out and have decent numbers by the end of the season.

That's two pitchers (the other being Bumgarner) I'd have rated ahead of Wheeler who signed for less. Plus I think the Rangers got a huge discount on Kluber. Even if you you chose not to outbid the Yankees on Cole, there was value to be had on quality.

This wasn't a qualitative assessment. This is a team that can't operate like the big market team that it is and its owners should've been run out of town years ago. Still not enough outrage over Wacha and Porcello. Maybe they'll make some unanticipated signings with the newfound Cespedes money. But what's likelier to happen is that a month or two from now, after everyone's signed up and there aren't any FA's left to sign, eff Wilpon will claim that BVW could've spent whatever he wanted to spend all along without restrictions. It'll be the same bullshit story running for over a decade now.

Steve Cohen can't get here fast enough.

Maybe I'm just an Alexander the Great fanboy at heart, but I'm always curious about https://www.tsn.ca/report-san-diego-padres-sign-pitcher-pierce-johnson-out-of-japan-1.1417431dudes with talent who "find themselves" abroad.

[bLOCKQUOTE]Johnson, 28, was very effective last season with Japan's Hanshin Tigers, posting a 1.38 ERA in 58.2 innings over 58 games. He went 2-3 with a 5.44 ERA in 44.2 innings pitched in two seasons for the San Francisco Giants before going overseas.

Johnson was selected in the first round in 2012 by the Chicago Cubs and found his fastball in Japan by optimizing his spin rate, reports Passan. [/bLOCKQUOTE]

During that dominant season, he put up 14 K/9... and 2 BB/9.

Also, an old https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28360164/francisco-cervelli-reaches-one-year-deal-marlins-source-saysred-assed friend has joined the division; Cervelli will get $2M guaranteed for the upcoming baseballing time period.

Will Harris, who helped choke away Game 7 to the Nationals, has signed with the Nationals. 3 years for a 35-year old RP is a lot but at least they know he's healthy. I'm sure that watching the ring ceremony will be quite uncomfortable for him. "Hey Will, look on the scoreboard--that's you throwing a meatball to Howie Kendrick!"

The last Will Harris on the Nats stole a couple of games from the Mets, and then he joined the Mets and stole a few more from the Mets.

Tyson Ross is an interesting guy in that he's been around since 2010, has had a perfectly respectable (for the era) 4.04 ERA, and yet has never posted a winning record. In fact, his record is a stinkalicious 44-70.

With starting pitcher workdays getting shorter, guys like Tyson are going to be more common — being good enough to hang on at the back end of rotations, but not so good that the manager won't give him the quickest of hooks, but good enough to keep getting his next turn.

Decent pitchers are going to be retiring with worse and worse records going forward, and great ones (cough! deGrom) won't be that much above .500.

Ross has always seemed to me to have great stuff, but four-inning stamina. He'd make an excellent bullpen-day workhorse.
