Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 Side question: Who are the top screen pairings of all time? When you see the names Doris Day and Rock Hudson paired, you almost automatically know you're in for light, frothy fare, but they co-starred so frequently, I think they're probably in the top five or 10 on most objective lists, right?Using only actors who appeared as romantics opposite each other in more than one role, counting returns in sequels as the same role:1) Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn2) Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers3) Myrna Loy and William Powell4) Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall5) Doris Day and Rock Hudson6) Marcello Mastriani and Sophia Loren7) Um, John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara?8) Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland?9) Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence?10) Cary Grant and Irene Dunn? Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello? Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan? Was Joe vs. the Volcano that much of a keeper? That's a pretty straight, white, and American list, with some exceptions. Sue me all you want.
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 Until your romantic qualifier, my first answer was Newman and Redford.Other than removing Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence from this list, I think it's pretty representative of a top 10
Double Switch Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2019 Posted May 15, 2019 Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn before she teamed up with Spencer Tracy. My favorite is The Philadelphia Story.Kurt Russell and Goldie HawnMichael Douglas and Kathleen Turner
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 15, 2019 Author Posted May 15, 2019 Is there a keeper from the Kurt Russell/Goldie Hawn ouvre? We're looking for some degree of quality here, man.
Double Switch Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2019 Posted May 15, 2019 Edgy MD wrote:Is there a keeper from the Kurt Russell/Goldie Hawn ouvre? Not really but there were three so that makes it a thing. "Keeper" was not among the qualifiers, was it?Has no one mentioned Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 15, 2019 Author Posted May 15, 2019 Well, by "top," I mean to imply some legacy of quality left behind, whether in a modest degree of quality over a high number of films, or an overwhelming degree of quality over a few films.John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara were paired a lot. So were Cary Grant and Irene Dunn. Some of those films were uneven. Some were pure poo.

I liked Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman, but, once again, as a Hitchcock advocate. To my knowledge, they did only two together. But Notorious definitely qualifies as a keeper.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2019 Posted May 15, 2019 The first pair I thought of, before I read your list, was William Powell and Myrna Loy. To me, they're the gold standard and I would have liked it if they had been cast in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner instead of Tracy and Hepburn.https://images.wisconsinhistory.org/700011220003/1122000054-l.jpg>

Guest 41Forever Guests Posted May 16, 2019 Posted May 16, 2019 Edgy MD wrote:Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan?Let's take it objectively. Sleepless in Seattle has a 73% rating from RottenTomatoes.com. You've Got Mail, despite being a cynical two-hour product commercial, somehow gets a 68% rating. Joe Versus the Volcano gets a 62% rating, so I guess critics have always been generous to Tom Hanks.Add those percentages up, and Hanks and Ryan get 203 points. Another possible way of measuring it — that would respect a deep bench more — is to double the points for the second-best film, triple the points for the third-best film, etc. That would give them a 395.Non-objectively, I give Sleepless in Seattle a 64 rating, Joe Versus a 29, and You've Got Mail about an 11.The volcano movie was awful, but I liked "You've Got Mail." I thought it was a nice remake of "The Shop at the End of the Street."
