Jose pulls off the capless look with aplomb. He grabs the final vote here.

Strawberry had such a photographable stance and swing, art directors couldn;t resist it.

I also like Jose here.

The funny thing about the Matlack cover is that the assumption is that TSN isn't really trying but then you look at the 3D banner logo and you think, maybe they ARE trying, but they just suck.

Fred Gwynne voted for it, I think.

The word balloon detracts seriously from the ESPN cover, but there are no strong rivals here. Whatever the flaws, ESPN The Magazine generally knows layout.

Went with Matlack. I remember being a right-handed goof ball putting

on my friends lefty glove and trying emulate Jon's windup and delivery.

who the hell voted for the Matlack cover and why?

I the hell did. I'm assuming the color wasn't as washed out when it first came out. I like the batter's perspective, with Matlack pretending to stare in to the catcher. I'm a sucker for the 1973 team. I like a cover that's crisp and clean. "Mr. Clutch" is a nice, positive title. Not that the others aren't. It just adds a little to an already good cover.

I agree it looks like we've seen that Darryl photo a million times, and probably so because it's a classic pose for him. He does look like he's about to uncoil. I like the Sid cover, too. I remember buyng that one right after I graduated and moved to Connecticut. I like the Jose photo and especially "Pure Joy." But the balloon is not necessary and it's kind of cluttered.

This an above-average grouping.

Matlack cover date indicates issue hit newsstands just as Mets were landing back in NY after losing Game Seven in Oakland.

I would have voted for Matlack, but I voted El Sid.

I'm trying to keep the memory of the old style Baseball Digest format alive.

And I think it looks like Seaver and Strawberry are the favorites here, no matter whether the pose is ordinary and oft seen.

So I'll be the contrarian here.
