Summer in the 'Hamton: The Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2019

Finding a roster ain't always easy. I've seen a few preliminary ones so far for Binghamton, some with 21 Rumble Ponies, some with 29, so we're not quote there yet.



What's new is the Eastern League is switching to a split season format this year, strangely waiting until the dawn of the season to announce it.



Also new is Bingolami manager Kevin Boles. Boles seems like quite a coup, having managed 18 years in the minors, including the last nine in the impressively productive Boston system. Mookie Betts, Anthony Rizzo, Miguel Cabrera — these are some of the big shot dudes he helped wean, and if you're like me, you're sure hoping to see Andres Gimenez and Anthony Kay added to that list.



Kay will be the Ponies Opening Day starter, having split last season between Columbia and St. Lucie. The Mets are clearly fast-tracking him after three years of college and two years lost to Tommy John. It's only his second pro-season, and he's 24, so you can see why the Mets are putting the gas down a little on the lefty first-rounder from 2016.



On a much slower track is knuckleballer Mickey Jannis, returning to Bingo for the fifth straight season. The New York Mets pitching staff is filled with guys who played alongside Jannie back in Bingo, but he's still there and they're all gone. In fact, it's at least the second straight year that the Jannis-headed pitcher has become a free agent only to return to the Mets' system.



Adonis Uceta and Ryan Ryder look forward to continuing their career-long bullpen argument over who has the pornier name. I think Ryder wins if we're talking about heteroporn, and Adonis if we mean man-on-man action, but the fight goes on. Stephen Villines, Stephen Nogosek, and Matt Blackham will be other interesting names popping out of that bullpen.



Apart from Gimenez, the infield will feature a returning Will Toffey. Some injuries have slowed down the ascent of Toff, but the former hockey player is found money, having arrived from Oakland in the Jeurys Familia deal, and remaining after Familia has returned.



A big part of the offseason has been restocking the upper minors with vets to play alongside homebrewed prospects. This is especially true among outfielders, and is exemplified in Syracuse, where Gregory Blanco, Carlos Gomez, and Rajai Davis have arrived to show Tim Tebow what a big leaguer looks like, but it's even more true in Bingo. Five of the six outfielders on the preliminary roster were acquired this offseason, with only 2018 Met Kevin Kaczmarski joining newcomers Barrett Barnes (nephew of Anthony Young), Alfredo Escalera, Jason Krizan (also an infielder), Braxton Lee, and Dario Pizzano on the preliminary roster.



The chilly game time tonight will be 6:30 as the Ponies head to New Hampshire, taking on the Blue Jays' prospects, featuring starter Patrick Murphy, coming off a fine season in The Florida State League. I'll get the roster up as soon as it becomes verified.

I'd like to see him make the majors and pitch for the Mets. But if he doesn't, I want to see Mickey Jannis pitch for them when I see them play at Hartford this June. Other than him, there's really nobody else on that team who makes me want to see him.

Well, that's a shame. The only team that looks more stocked with prospects this year seems like Columbia.



It looks like I jumped the gun a bit on Mickey Jannis. He's going to start the season on the Injured List, along with others. But even better, the Rumble Ponies will have David Peterson starting with them, giving them two big-shot top-pick prospect lefthanders in the rotation.



The coaching staff is familiar. Bench coach Ender Chavez is, of course, the older brother of Mets hero Endy Chavez. Tony Jaramillo is the nephew of highly respected MLB hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, who once interviewed for the Mets' manager job. Tony was raised by Uncle Rudy after his parents got busted for dealing heroin (yeeps). Jonathan Hurst is related to 1994 Met Jonathan Hurst in that they are both the same person, although the pitching coach version is about twice as large.

Memory is fuzzy, but I seem to recall that in a prior life (or on another CPF board) I might have adopted Mike Gibbons.

Since he's the only other lefty, I guess you're referring to Blake Taylor as the other of the two top prospect left handers. He was a second round pick of the Pirates. How did he get to the Mets to continue his (so far) undistinguished career? Or is that the "why" part of the answer?

You misread his birthdate. It's 03/30/18. That means he's one year old. Or perhaps 101 years old.

I was impressed with Ali Sanchez, catcher, during Spring Training. He doesn't have a much of a bat but, and hear me out, he has a great arm and can throw out runners at second base! I know we're not used to seeing it but I saw him do it 2 or 3 times this spring! I thought "don't they go from 1st to 2nd base automatically?" but it turns out that if you throw it there and someone catches it and tags the runner before he touches the base, he is out! We never see that so it was a complete surprise!

Sorry about the errata. I was rushing to get to choir practice. Sadly, practice was pushed back a half hour, so all my rushing was for naught. The second lefty is, of course, Kay, who had already been announced in this thread as Opening Day starter.



And like with the parent club, Opening Day belonged to the good guys. The Ponies beat New Hampshire 5-2, as Kay went a whopping 4 1/3 innings, giving up just one unearned run.



Mazeika played first base and batted third, collecting two hits, including a double, the Rumble Po's only extra-base hit of the night.

I was impressed with Ali Sanchez, catcher, during Spring Training. He doesn't have a much of a bat but, and hear me out, he has a great arm and can throw out runners at second base! I know we're not used to seeing it but I saw him do it 2 or 3 times this spring! I thought "don't they go from 1st to 2nd base automatically?" but it turns out that if you throw it there and someone catches it and tags the runner before he touches the base, he is out! We never see that so it was a complete surprise!

Tonight's game in Portland's Hadlock Field was rained out. Actually, it was officially canceled due to a "wet field," so I guess it was moistened out. I'm glad they didn't try to dry the field with a https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/04/08/baseball-field-set-fire-attempt-dry-it-connecticut-town-says/3401135002/prairie fire. This leaves The Binghamton Ruble Ponies' record at 2-2, a game and a half behind the Reading Fightin' Phils in the Eastern League's Eastern Division, but again, with no prairie fires.



The Ponies, by some twist of fate, have four lefthanded hitters among their five-man outfield, but it's their lone righthanded bat — Barrett Barnes — that has done the damage so far, starting the season .273 / .385 / .545 // .930 through the first four games. Barnes was signed late (end of January) out of the Pittsburgh system, after declaring for minor league free agency. He has one of two Pony homers this season, which is encouraging as he's built like a fullback, but hasn't really shown much power through his career.



Barnstormer can hit until he's blue in the face, but it can only help if the Pony pitchers do their duty shutting the opposition down, and with Anthony Kay and David Peterson on the team, they are capable of that. Kay's Opening Day start (no runs through 4 2/3 innings) remains the best outing, but here's hoping these kids develop a sweet little fun rivalry. Of course, it won't matter much if they aren't allowed to even go five.



You want poison from the pen, side-armer Steven Villines is bringing the arsenic so far, throwing 3 2/3 innings over two appearances, giving up no runs in 4 2/3 innings, striking out four. STINGY!



I wasn thinking Wagner product and Buddy Hackett-lookalike Phil Capra had one of the more benevolent promotions you're ever going to see, joining the AA Rumble Ponies all the way from Kingsport in the Appalachian League. Not only had the happy-go-lucky Seahawk landed in Bingo by skipping Brooklyn, Columbia, and St. Lucie, he did it after hitting .146 / .266 / .184 // .451 last season in 124 plate appearances. That's Chris Davis bad, right there, and so I was puzzled, but it seeps Capracorn is on the IL, so his promotion appears to just be a paper one.



While those above are some of the rosier starts in Ponyland, it hasn't all been run for the roses. Shortstop Andres Gimenez has gotten off to a start that makes Brandon Nimmo say, "I'm glad I'm not that guy." AG has gone 1-14 (.071) so far with no walks and five strikeouts. That's not going to help me get over the idea that they push these shortstop prospects too damn hard. On the plus-side, though, his one hit was a triple.

A day after the Ponies bested the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4-1, New Hampshire returned the favor by same score. The karmic payabck leaves Binghamton in third place in the Eastern League Eastern Division, a mere 1.5 games off the pace.



is anybody finally starting to hit? Well, infielder and minor league vet Sam Haggerty has been swinging a nice stick the last few games, checking in at .290 / .333 / .419 // .753 through the first seven games, leading the team with two steals, and playing error-free defense at second.



Making few errors on the mound has been Michael "Gib" Gibbons. Injured and/or ineffective through 2016 and 2017, The Gibster finally got his career back on track last season, and has been rock solid in this first two starts this year, throwing 11 innings and racking up 13 strikeouts against only four walks. It all ads up to a 2.45 ERA for the Connecticutian, who turns 26 next week.



But, when you're workdays are as short as they have been in the early part of the season for the Rumble Ponies, you better have good penmanship. And some of the best of that has been provided by the right arm of Joseph Zanghi. Jay-Z has been unscored upom through ihs first 5 2/3 innings out of the pen, striking out six and dispersing only seven baserunners — four by hit, two by walk, and one plunked.



You're thinking, "Only seven games so far? What the fuck is up with that?"



I can literally hear you thinking that.



Well, the truth is that spring in the northeast can be a wet prospect. The team recently survived an eight-game stretch with seven of the games being canceled due to inclement weather, soggy fields, chafed buttocks, you name it. It was actually eight of nine if you count one game that they started but pulled the plug on after a few innings. So if you're thinking that there's not much new happening with a week in betwen reports — few games and zero transactions — well, that's not on me.



The torrid action continues tomorrow with the tie-breaking finale of the New Hampshire home serie at M&T BAnk Parks. Future Mets rotation fixture David Peterson will take the mound against Zach Logue, who I think played a dashing young rogue in the Australian soap opera Neighbors. ("Logue the Rogue," they called him.) It'll be We Care Wednesday, with a chunk of proceeds going to local social service organizations. They've had a lot of rainouts and even their makeup doubleheaders have been rained out.

They will probably be playing a lot of double headers later in the year, so we may see some St. Lucie pitchers brought up to AA to fill in for some tired arms. It will be a good test for the organization's pitching depth.

An 11-6 thumping of The Akron Rubber Ducks allowed The Binghamton Mets to move into first place on the same evening as their parent team. Winners of seven of their last 10, the Little Horses are now a half game up on the competition in The Eastern League Eastern Division. They are hoping to put some distance between themselves and the competition as Chris Mazza — back from a brief visit to AAA — returns to the Ponies' rotation.



The game featured three hits each from Sam Haggerty and Patrick Mazeika. PatMaz was playing first base, where he has seen as much time as he has behind the plate, where he has been sharing duties with Ali Sanchez. Notably, even in breaking out for 11 runs, the the Ponies still didn't hit a homer.



But, having now won seven of their last 10, it looks like much of their early season slumping is behind them. Barrett Barnes, the former Pittsburgh first-rounder, signed this offseason after a summer in The Atlantic League, was tearing it up before hitting the injured list on April 19. (Barrett was a Sugarland Skeeter who is actually from Sugarland, Texas, a fact that initially had me curious, before prompting me finally to ask, "Why is a team from Sugarland, Texas in The Atlantic League?")



Anytips, Barrett made his first six games with Bingo count, slugging two homers, and driving in five runs whilst pasting up a .286 / .400 / .619 // 1.019. That's some first-round shit.



Among the pitchers young Barrett is providing offense for is fellow first-rounder Anthony Kay. AK owned AKron last week in throwing perhaps the best game of his young career — firing off six innings of one-hit shutout ball, while striking out 10 and walking three. STONY BROOK REPRESENT!



Steven "White" Villines continues to be a deadly force out of the bullpen. While his sidearming ways gives the opponents a different look, as they say, nobody's getting a particularly good look at all. The Villifier has yet to allow a runner to cross the plate in his first 6 2/3 innings, striking out eight. Interestly, he's done this while not yet being the ground ball machine that he has shown himself to be throughout his career. Adjustment? Small sample size? Who's to say?



Tonight they go for the four-game sweep over Akron, and with The Mazza Ball on the mound, I like their chances.

Mickey Jannis will likely never be R.A. Dickey. Among other reasons, his knuckleball, when it's working, doesn't dart out of the strike zone, but instead drops. So he doesn't produce prodigious strikeout numbers. Last night's stellar debut featured only three of them, but instead generated 14 ground ball outs and only two hits and one walk against his ledger.



The win brought his career total with the franchise to 22 — third all time in the record books that pre-date the Rumble Ponies re-branding. It also helped them keep pace with a red-hot Trenton Thunder team, who has won five in a row, and sits atop the division, 2.5 games ahead of the second place Ponies in the Eastern League Eastern Division of the East-Most Easterners. It was the sixth win in the last 10 for the Carousel Horses. Not bad, considering they endured a no-hitter in there.



The game also featured two hits and the game's lone RBI from Braxton Lee, who may have an urban sounding name but is such a http://www.milb.com/images/657658/generic/180x270/657658.jpgdimpled Bible Belt white guy that he makes Brandon Nimmo look gangsta. Braxton, who spent some time with the Marlins last season before getting claimed off waivers in the offseason by the Mets, has been heating up, going .333 / .444 / .466 // .910 over his last 10 games, raising his overall line to .300 / .386 / .460 // .846. If the lefty-hitting/righty-throwing spray-hitting BraXton can show some power or even steal at a more effective rate than he has shown, he may get himself back on the big league track. He's demonstrated himself to be a really good ballhawk with an above average arm. But “If he really works hard, he can be the next Matt den Dekker!” isn't the most thrilling scouting report. But still, we root.



And when you're rooting, it's hard not to root for starting pitcher Harol Gonzalez, because when Harol pitches, there's never any D.

Anyway, Harry is one of those guys who alternates intriguing good years with enigmatically poor ones. And he needs a good one this year, because last season was just a massive kick in the balls. I mean, he took two steps back, lined it up, thrust himself forward and planted a huge punt right in the organization's crotch. How else can you describe a season in which a guy is healthy enough to get 22 starts, but goes 1-16 with a 4.80 ERA across three levels? The heart of that season was an 0-9 / 7.79 campaign with this very same Binghamton squadron.



So, lucky to have a job still, Harol has already produced more wins in two 2019 starts than he did all of 2018. So, at 2-0 / 2.03 through 13 1/3 innings, he's already giving the Mets just what they need to indulge his career a little further. With 19 strikeouts against only two walks, he has certainly given the Mets the sort of 180 they need to see with a new regime in place. (Due disclosure: I adopted Harol at the old forum.)



When you get starts like that, you want to finish them up with a reliever like Ryley Gilliam. Though the name sounds like that cute chick you remember from The OC, Ryley is in fact a 2018 fifth rounder out of Clemson who has produced a 2.17 ERA so far in his minor league career. He's just now only recently joined Binghamton from St. Lucie, and thrown only one inning. Why should I be telling you about a guy who has given the Ponies only one inning? Because it was an impeccable inning, facing three guys and whiffing all three.



I wouldn't guess any other members of the 2018 draft class has made it this far, but it is said in certain Eastern countries that if you make love while Rylie Gilliam is on the mound, your baby will be blessed.

The dominant start we were hoping for from Noah Syndergaard out in San Diego last night, we actually did end up getting … from Anthony Kay ... in Pennsylvania. Sir K threw seven innings against the Harrisburg Senators, allowing only one run on four hits, with the lone blemish to his record coming on a solo homer by Drew Ward.



The win was the seventh in the last 10 for the Bings, keeping exact pace in the Eastern League Eastern Division with the first-place Trenton Thunder, in second, a mere half game off the pace.



After getting beat around in his last start in April, David Peterson pulled a 180 against Portland and gave The Ponies his best start of the season, going 5 2/3 innings against the Sea Dogs, striking out nine and yielding just one run. He did give up nine hits (and a single walk), but he's sure pointing in the right direction.



Finishing tonight's game was Stephen Nogosek. And as usual, No-Go was taking his nickname seriously. Part of a miserly Bingo bullpen, Nogosek has given up no runs in his last five appearances, covering 9 1/3 innings, and now has lowered his ERA to 0.64 in 14 innings. The Nog is the last of the three pitchers the Mets got from Boston in the Addison Reed deal, and he … won't have to be great to exceed the contributions of Gerson Bautista and Jamie Callahan, but let's hope No-Doz eclipses them nine times over.



Hey, you know what a .231 batting average is worth? It's worth more than a little if it comes with a .429 on-base percentage. That's right, three times every seven trips to the plate, Will Toffey is getting on base. That kind of table-setting has allowed him to lead the team in runs scored, and to build a solid .800 OPS, with room for improvement. He's also made only one error at third with his suh-WEET defense, and I'll frankly be gobsmacked if he isn't in Syracuse by mid-season.



With first place within breathing distance, the Ponies get back to business tonight with another matchup against the 23-7 Senators. Undefeated Harol Gonzalez takes the hill against Tyler Mapes, which sounds like a name George Costanza made up.

Nogosek is really rocking the Casbah. I sorta thought he was the least of the Bosox Trio but may have been mistaken about that. Not that Class AA relief pitchers are worth getting all that excited about.

A 6-4 loss to The Hamilton FisherCats left The Binghamton Rumble Ponies one game out of first in The Eastern League Eastern Division, sitting just behind the Yankee-affiliated Trenton Thunder. This is just the latest in two weeks of first-place jockeying for the two contenders, with both going 6-4 over the last 10, and unable to make a move to hold the lead on their own.



With only one bad start in his last four, Harol Gonzalez has continued his career turnaround by pitching the first 6 2/3 innings of a no-hitter this week (as noted above). For his part, you can expand his current streak of hitlessness to 7 2/3 innings if you want to go back to his previous start. This has extended his record to 3-0, which is awesome when you consider he was 1-16 last season. He's struck out 30 and walked six in 25 innings, and opponents are hitting .186 off of him. And all that got him just named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week.



Oh, and during that no-hitter, he totally wanted to do a Noah, so he slugged two singles and plated two runs. "I always practice my hitting in the offseason," said Gonzo the Great of his first career hits and RBIs. "I play softball in the offseason sometimes so I can swing. I'm not afraid up there or anything. I just want to put the barrel on the ball, and tonight, it was good."



You know who else practices his hitting in the offseason? Arismendy Alcantara. That's who. He practices it during the season as well, and it's been really paying off of late. The ex-big-leaguer was hitting .176 on May 2, doing the dumb things he had to do, and touching the puppet head. Then he stole his first base of the season, quit his job down out the car wash, leaving nobody a goodbye note, and started tearing ass in the batter's box. Since then, the multi-position player has gone .366 / .381 / .537 // .918 while stealing his four more bags, and establishing himself in the leadoff spot for Binghamton, where every mother's son wants to be.



Speaking of, that Joe Zanghi continues to be quite a mother. The stocky, multi-inning right-hand reliever has been toying with the Eastern League, going scoreless over his last 9 1/3 innings, allowing just four hits in that span. With just one run allowed in 17 2/3 innings so far this season, he's been more machine than man, and that machine is starting to fast-track itself, with his stupid 0.51 ERA lowering his minor league career number to 2.28, Joey Zed will see you after school.



The first-place dogfight will continue tonight as Binghamton hosts Altoona, with big lefty David Peterson taking the hill and looking for his third straight solid start. Group tickets are available.

Anthony Kay throws a seven-inning shutout for his first professional complete game in Game One of a double-header over Altoona.



Kay scattered three hits while striking out eight and walking one.



He probably won't be thrust into the Mets rotation this season unless a serious need forces their hand. But he could be a meaningful piece of the big-league bullpen down the stretch, and maybe into the post-season, if it comes to that.
