batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 Darling dishes on Gary Carter; sez Carter had an ego. I'm shocked, shocked SHOCKED,I tell youse. https://nypost.com/2019/04/02/ron-darlings-tell-all-skewers-others-not-just-lenny-dykstra/amp/https://nypost.com/2019/04/02/ron-darlings-tell-all-skewers-others-not-just-lenny-dykstra/amp/
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 Ya know, maybe most of this stuff was better left unsaid. I'm guessing Ronnie's violating some serious clubhouse protocol here.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 Mookie said nobody liked Carter also. Kinda sad, but it must be true if they both mention it.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2019 Author Posted April 3, 2019 Mookie? Pretty much just about every Expo that played with him, too.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 One of the most revered and classy figures associated with the Mets was radio announcer Bob Murphy. But during the 1986 playoffs in Houston, Darling reveals how the team filed into the clubhouse in the Astrodome before a game to find Murphy passed-out drunk on the trainer's table. He was so sloshed, the team had a meeting around his prone body, as if he was the roast in the middle of a buffet table.Didn't Murphy take some sick leave during the 1986 post-season, and was substituted for on the radio broadcast by Ralph Kiner?
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 (edited) Murph had to sit out Game One. Kiner, Healy and Staub each took three innings alongside Thorne.Ron issued a statement today saying he doesn't want any of this to detract from the Home Opener and, besides, because of a legal threat, he's been advised to stay mum. dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 What's come out in this book makes Darling look worse than anyone he dishes about. Except Lenny.

Turns out Murphy's condition was a lot more serious.According to a 1986 Hartford Courant notes column following Game 2 of the '86 NLCS, by Claire Smith and Owen Canfield, Murphy “was admitted to Methodist Hospital in Houston before Game 2 for observation after suffering a slight cerebral spasm. He was resting comfortably and is expected to be hospitalized for a couple of days. Ralph Kiner worked in Murphy's place on the radio broadcast of the game over WHN.”
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 8, 2019 Posted April 8, 2019 The timeline seems to add up. Do you think they were having a meeting around Murph when he was suffering from more than a drunken night?
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2019 Posted April 8, 2019 Yes, I do, and going by the overall assholishness of that team, they were probably clueless to the severity of his condition, thinking he was only sleeping one off.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 8, 2019 Posted April 8, 2019 It would be a damned shame if Ron still failed to recognize (or recall) that 33 years later.
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2019 Posted April 8, 2019 Like I said earlier, Ron looks worse here than anyone he painted in an unfavorable light.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 8, 2019 Posted April 8, 2019 But as you said, not so much with regard to Lenny.https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2019/04/07.p1.lcf_.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=780>
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2019 Posted April 8, 2019 I may have to amend that. While Lenny is a reprobate, I find it interesting that so many of the 86 Mets are jumping to his defense.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 Got this for my birthday. Enjoying it!
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 Btw has anyone else read this? What did you think of the Mackey sasser episode?
