The Boys from Syracuse: The Syracuse Mets in 2019

Transactions have been flying through Syracuse so fast, as the parent club tried against all circumstances to find a workable bullpen combination, and two veteran batters got their release to declare free agency, at one point The Syracuse Mets had 10 starting pitchers on their roster. It was like when the original X-Men got captured by a giant mutant living island, and Charles Xavier had to rush all over the globe and recruit new members for a new X-Men team. But when their first official mission was to head down to the island and rescue the original team, things got awkward in the zephyr on the way back, with the two groups looking at each other, like, “Hey, great to have you guys around, but are we the X-Men or are you the X-Men.



In fact, they were technically still were holding 29 guys on the roster as they fell 6-3 last night to The Rochester Red Wings, with former teammate Ian Krol getting the save for The Flour City, and former-Met Jordany Valdespin going deep off Mets starter Drew Gagnon.



The lost was the fifth in 10 for the formerly first-place Mets, dropping them to 41-44, and allowing them to be passed by The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, dropping into fifth place of six, 8 1/2 games back in The International League North Division.



A mainstay returning to the rotation during that time has been Corey Oswalt. As he'd been relieving with the big club, the team has been giving him shorter starts as they “stretch” him back into a starter's workload, which strikes me as a miserable abundance of caution after he only relieved twice in the majors. But he's only gone 4 2/3 innings in each of his first two starts, while allowing only two runs in total. He's struck out seven over those 9 1/3 innings, and walked only two. He'll be back.



Casey Coleman hasn't been the only man of cole to toe the rubber for the Mets, as free agent Louis Coleman joined the team at the end of May. Screw-You Lou, as I imagine he's known to nobody, allowed two runs in his last outing, but even with that hiccup, has had a nice little run of success, putting up a 2.31 ERA in his last 10 games. I'm-a-Cole-Man has had success in the majors, appearing in 264 (mostly AL) games, with a 3.51 career ERA. He's allowed a .230 batting average over his major league career and a .198 mark in the minors, so despite being a 33-year-old drifter, he may have something to offer a Mets team scrambling for anything that looks like a partial solution in the bullpen.



In the meantime, too little has been said about Ruben Tejada, and like Dilson Herrera, Tehotty has some reason to be kind of pissed that Luis Guillorme got another callup while he waits by the phone. Ruben has been slapping the ball all over The International League, while again displaying the batting eye that made him stand out as a young player, all of it adding up to a haughty slash line of .336 / .423 / .500 // .923. I realize that it's 2019 and things therefore aren't necessarily as they seem, but still, that's Ruben Tejada with a .500 slugging average, folks. And he's still only 29! (Check out his baby face, above.)



While the world is off it's rocker, somehow not scheduling a baseball game for The New York Mets on Independence Day, you can catch the Syracuse team hosting Buffalo this evening at NBT Bank Stadium, which I'm just going to go ahead and re-name Lou Reed Park, after Syracuse University's only (I think?) alumnus in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There's no announced starter, but if I was a betting man, I'd put my money on Flexie.

Last night, Tim Tebow hit his 3rd HR in the last 6 games but is still only hitting .163.

We were there on Independence Day, and due to the rare co-occurrence of a July 4 home game on a Thursday, aka "Dollar dog night," featuring $1 hot dogs and drinks and $2 beers, the place was filled to capacity, 12k strong. The Mets won and, as Edgy guessed, Chris Mazza dominated once again with six strong innings. Quite the nice fireworks display as well.

While the big league Mets were in Minnesota, squeaking past the juggernaut Twinkies, the Syracuse Mets were also on the road in the Midwest, taking one from The Indianapolis Indians, 5-2. Drew Gagnon, was typically effective, yielding two runs in five innings, while Paul Sewald, Daniel Zamora, and Tyler Bashlor each took an inning to drive the game home, allowing only one baserunner among them. The torrid hitting of Ruben Tejada (3-3, 4 RBI) continued and is becoming harder for the organization to ignore.



The loss lifted the fourth-place Mets within one game of .500 at 47-48, within a game of third place, and eight games off the pace in the International League North Division. But it was the sixth win in the last ten for the Orangemets as they try to scratch back into the picture.



Doing a big part of the scratching has been that same Drew Gagnon. Dr. Drew has allowed exactly two runs in each of his five games since returning from New York Mets. Those starts get longer each time out. He's now sitting on a 2.28 ERA through 43 1/3 innings, allowing only three homers in that time, despite it being, like, the homerest year ever. Dr. Dre's ERA is about five and a half runs higher in the majors, so the next time he's called up, make sure he gets his rest and vitamins.



You know who has been getting his vitamins? Ryan O'Rourke has. The Merrimac Menace has been graduating from LOOGy into longer, full-inning or longer appearances and has thrived. Going 10 2/3 innings in his last 10 appearances, he's thrown shutout ball in nine of them, putting up a 1.69 ERA over that period. He's also stranded more people than JetBlue.



But like Gotham, Syracuse needs bats. And holy smokes, has super-utility player Arismendy Alcantara responded to the bat signal. The Double A Battery has played six different positions since being called up from Binghamton, and done so while hitting at an all-star pace of .305 / .377 / .546 // .923. Did you know that he has stolen seven bases and not been caught once? Well it's true!! Add in AA's AA numbers and he's successfully stolen 13 of 14. Efficient!! He's passed several more established players on the depth chart, and even knocked former Met and former first-rounder Gavin Cecchini down to AA.

Six games out on August 13 shouldn't generate too glum an outlook, but in AAA, where the season ends a month earlier, the outlook is a little overcast. You look at the lack of thunder on the Mets bench, and you get an idea of what attrition has done in the immediate supply chain, particularly in the outfield. Currently down 9-6 to the Durham Bulls, who know how to shop for candlesticks, a loss would be the third straight for a team that is 5-5 over its last 10 and has been meh most of the second half.



In a rotation that has all the stability of Jell-O on a fault line, Drew Gagnon has been the steady hand. Since getting sent down in mid-June, The New Drew Review has made nine starts, allowing exactly two runs in six straight. But the real showcase has been his most recent outing, in which he went a hard-to-fathom eight shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks. I believe he was perfect through seven, and the times being what they are, the Mets walked off with a 17-0 win. He's held enemies to a .231 batting average over this stretch and maintained a 2.70 ERA, but it was that last one that earned him the return to the big league squad. He's even 2-for-4 with a double with the bat. GIVE HIM A START!



If you need a reliever, look again at Stephen Nogosek. I mean, yeah, Egg Nog didn't get it done his last trip out, but he's been a golden goose down in the minors, and that's because he keeps producing goose eggs. You know what he's given up in AAA? He's given up dick. He's got a zero ERA through 22 innings across 15 games. Along the way, Waitasek has yielded a .123 batting average to bad guys.



You know what that means? That means he turns every professional-assed batter in the league into Matt Harvey. (Although, to be fair, they can probably bunt better.). This is no bolt out of the blue, either. Before joining the OrangeMets, Noggin had thrown 19 innings in AA with a 0.95 ERA. If he remembers to pack his power pills before his next trip to Flushing, he could be useful.



Listen, I know you you're just getting used to the idea of Arismendy Alcantara, but it's an idea you might want to get used to. Super-subbing at every position around the diamond, Double-A is getting the job done at Triple-A, OPS-ing at .892 over 72 games. Ol' 18 Letters has gone .326 / .356 / .512 // .867 over his last 10 games, including a massive 4-for-6, four-RBI game.



If Aaron Altherr is replaced by Arismendy Alcantara, will that be the first AA-AA transaction?



Up in Syracuse, the game against Durham has ended in a 9-6 Mets loss. You know who shouldn't despair? You. You shouldn't despair. Lots of exciting action as the same two teams lock up tomorrow. Drew Gagnon is scheduled to go for the Mets, but he's in Flushing now (on edit, he just pitched a sweet inning in Atlanta). Maybe Flexie returns to the rotation.

Ali Sanchez is a prospect, and was hitting well at Binghamton.

When he was promoted to Syracuse, I thought it was because Rene Rivera would be brought up to the majors.

But they have kept the torrid Rivera at AAA and Sanchez on the bench.

Gonzo has gone 6-0 / 2.68 since his callup from Binghamton, following his 6-4 / 3.14 line in AA. That combines to a 12-4 record and a 3.01 ERA overall this season in 137 2/3 innings. MLB.com does not list Harol among the Mets' top 30 prospects, I sense some Sterling in his future.



Tomorrow's one-game playoff is at 1:00 PM. I haven't seen an announced starter yet, but I think the smart money is on Ervin Santana.
