ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 I am paraphrasing, Minaya quoted as saying"Anything we get from Cespedes in 2019 would be be helpful and really great."I believe him to be setting us up for the idea that Yoenis is flat out shotWe really need a big banger OFSay, Bryce Harper?
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 I don't know if I agree that Cespedes is shot. I think Minaya, like the rest of us, have no idea what he will be and when he will be back. It's nice to hear him say it though. That Brodie press conference from a few weeks ago was worrisome, when he started talking about adding Cespedes at the deadline. Once you start counting on that we're in really big trouble.

nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 If Minaya is pessimistic about Cespedes' health I dont see why we shouldnt be too.Now act like a big market team and sign someone! Pretend he isn't here and if he comes back consider the "4 guys for 3 spots" a nice problem to have.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 While I agree that Minaya knows a lot more than we do, having lived through Minaya's stewardship of this club, I'd suggest he sometimes knows a lot less than he thinks he does. That said, either way, I'm sure they'll add another outfieder. How big they'll go is an open question, of course, but that may not have a whole lot to do with how long Céspedes is expected to be out.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 Given how the Mets operate, Minaya saying he doesn't expect much from Cespedes this season is basically saying 'you'll see him in 2020'.
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 It's more likely read that "no one (including Cespedes) knows how long it will take for him to come back, so we should plan without him." It doesn't necessarily mean that Minyana has any more knowledge than we do, just that you can't assume he'll be back when projected when constructing the roster. It's actually a pretty innocuous (and obvious) statement that people are reading far too much into.
