Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 (edited) And it would be wise to stop thinking that he is some sort of "second closer" to bring into high leverage situations. It looks like he has the potential to be good, having posted very good numbers in 2015. But since then his walk numbers have crept up and his WHIP is through the roof. League average for WHIP is typically around 1.30 to 1.35.AJ Ramos has posted WHIPs of 1.36 in 2016, 1.41 in 2017 and now 1.35 in 2018. He is not a closer. He is a league average pitcher. And he's certainly not worth the $9 million they are paying him.Everyone agreed Hansel Robles was terrible last year right? His WHIP was 1.34. Edited April 17, 2018 by Guest

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2018 Author Posted April 17, 2018 And from what I've seen, it's not something that he can necessarily "fix". He relies on guys swinging at that slider out of the strike zone for outs. His fastball tops out around 92 and it's straight and flat. The only way he gets outs is to mix in that fastball and give a steady diet of sliders out of the zone and hope that guys bite. As the league has figured him out, they are biting less and so his walks are up.I don't get it. This is absolutely a case of guys getting fooled by the "closer" label.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 he's sucked this year and if he continues to suck it'll suck to use him. He's not striking anyone out, walking everyone, giving up nothing but fly balls. He feels roughly like Oliver Perez though, otherwise. Basically unhittable but often you get on base anyway. this year has been straight garbage though. no one is swinging out of the zone, and they're making a ton of contact in the zone. He's not missing bats. it's small sample stuff, but it's not encouraging. His velocity is down on everything except his changeup.
