EXPECTATIONS for 18: Tim Tebow

Hi, everybody. I don't want to be causing a distraction. Just living the dream like a lot of these younger guys I'm working out with.

But gosh darn it, everybody wants to talk to me. For now, I'm a .225-hitting left-fielder, with a little bit of athletic ability, a little bit of bullpoop, and a can-do attitude. That's gotten me through my first pro season, but AA is a taller order. Improve or die. Because if I don't succeed at least a little more at this than I did at football, my agent says the next step is politics. And you thought you were sick of me now.

So me. 2018. What's it gonna be?

He'll stick it out and will probably get a late-year promotion to Las Vegas to goose their attendance. But he'll be nothing special. Stats are kind of meaningless with this guy.

He'll probably strike out a lot in Class AA, but I'm long over being fake-outraged that they are giving him a shot. So what? He's a big strong pro athlete who can hit the ball a mile, it's only a question of whether he can do so reliably enough to be an MLBer and if not, his club employs 24 other guys with a shot and they need 9 to play.

He'll continue to progress, and because he's on a fast track, they'll get him to Vegas by mid-season if he's doing decently well. Will continue to be a good news story for the Mets and the teams he plays for.

I'm not so sure he gets to Vegas. The Mets are leaving so they might not care about the attendance boost and I doubt he hits enough to EARN the promotion.

My prediction is he stays in AA until the minor league season ends. Pinch hits a few times in September for the Mets, then gets removed from the 40 before the rule 5 draft to allow the Mets to protect real players.

This is his make or break year.
Some are outraged at what they see as undeserved promotions, but you can't play the long game with a "prospect" his age so the half-year jumps make sense at this point to see if he'll sink or swim.
I'm betting on sink but rooting for swim. It would be kind of cool to see him get a mid-year jump to AAA and then to the big leagues for September, even if it only amounts to a few ABs.

But absent a steep learning curve starting real soon, I think this is his last year of baseball.
It'll likely be enough for the Mets to say they gave him a shot, and it'll be enough for him to be able to say he gave it a shot.
Then everyone walks away happy on no one got hurt.

It's not really worth looking at his stats anyway. He's not really a prospect, he's a brand promoter. Looks like the Mets will be good this year, so hopefully there will be no major league free time to do silly stuff like this.

I'm not sure what Tebow has done to promote 'his brand' other than live his life. He's on TV as an announcer during college football season and probably "wrote" a book or two. BFD.
Keith and Ron do at least as much to promote theirs and, unlike Kardashians, none of it involves naked selfies (at least as far as I know) or updates on what they're selling or who they're fucking and/or pregnant by this week.

Look, I have zero interest in college football so have no personal interest in whether Tebow is revered or hated. I essentially don't have an opinion of him because I never watched him play (except for a handful of his pro games) and have never seen him on the myriad of hype shows that lead into each week's slate of TV games.
But it isn't HIS fault that large numbers of mostly southern men measure their self-worth based on the outcomes of football games involving supposed amateurs connected to a college that they may or may not have once attended. It also isn't his doing that the networks which cover (read: promote) that sport take it upon themselves to God-up a couple of teenagers every year and that he was one of the few who didn't ultimately crash and burn well short of their pronouncements. Nor was he responsible for ESPN telling the producers of each of their radio/TV shows that 'there's no such thing as too much Tebow talk' for something like three years after his football career had ended. And I also somehow doubt that he forced Florida (or was it Fla St?) to erect a statue of him just shortly after he was legally old enough to abstain from drinking.



btw, MOST minor leaguers aren't 'prospects', and neither are the guys they're hitting/pitching against.

Keith, Ron or the Kardashians didn't do an anti-abortion ad for Focus on the Family that ran during the Super Bowl. And he took a knee before it became a sign of protest. So he's not just a random guy. I don't care about college football either, but there is a certain segment of the population that sees him as a hero not because he's a football player playing baseball. And that's okay; he has the right to believe what he chooses to. But that's a very important part of his 'brand', and everybody involved knows it.

If he tears it up and merits the promotion to AAA and the majors, Mazel Tov. But we'll see.

So every athlete who takes a stand on an issue is guilty of 'branding' and therefore doesn't deserve to be taken seriously as an athlete, or just the ones who take stances we might not agree with?

If there's a Tebow-branding movement being shoved down our throats I'm missing it, particularly if there's some kind of Tebow-directed branding movement connected to playing minor league baseball.
A one-off issue ad (three years ago?) and kneeling in the end zone (six or seven?) -- as if we haven't seen a few HUNDRED athletes do that before him and since -- doesn't strike me as much of a campaign.
Hell, he's taking more mocking abuse for this attempt than anything.


I get why not everyone likes him, and I get why people think this experiment is a waste of time. But I don't get the contempt for him wanting to try.
Plus I think it would be a cool story if he did succeed at it, even if only briefly.

I still think it started as a marketing stunt to sell minor league tickets
and merchandise. He hit a homer yesterday. Yay! Wouldn't surprise me
if he makes an attempt at the professional tennis circuit if the soft porn
gig doesn't pan out.
