Home field disadvantage for Binghamton.

A relentless Binghamton Mets team scored in each of the last three innings, but their furious rally against the Altoona Curve came up short in the ninth, as Joey Terdaslovich, who had homered earlier in the game, flew out with the bases loaded.

Knuckleballer Mickey Jannis went six scoreless for the win his last time out. Tricky Mickey has been red hot, going 27 1/3 innings over his last four starts, giving up just two runs. Moreover, Mickey has tied the record — and will break it the next time he takes the mound — for the most starts in Binghamton franchise history, with 66. A pair of authentic Mets skyline sox go to whoever guesses whose record Jannis just tied. It’s a toughie.

Also rocking with classic Binghamton spirit in recent weeks has been newcomer Will Toffey. The Toffer had been a real disappointment in High-A for the Athletics this year, but the Mets still liked him, and not only jumped at the chance to grab him in the Jeurys Familia trade, but immediately promoted him to AA, and boy has that Pony responded, going .274 / .425 / .452 // .877 over 29 games, compared to his .244 / .357 / .384 // .741 as an Oakland prospect. That’s a 136-point difference. And yeah, a lot of that his marvelous .151 was rate, but he’s also racked up 11 extra-base hits in his 29 Bingoriffic games, compared to 13 in 48 games with Sockton in the California League.

You’ve already seen Daniel Zamora in the big league (and Little League) parks, but you may be wondering how he got called up all the way from AA with just a 3.48 ERA. Well, that’s a good question, but consider that the bulk of his runs allowed (7 of 20) came in the team’s lost July. So far in August, DZ has given up just 1 run in 5 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out 8. That may not scream callus, but you can imagine why Mickey would want to get a look at him before the chaos of next spring ensues.

The loss leaves the Pony Show at 60-66 and a precarious 10 1/2 games out with their elimination number down to seven. They’ve certainly shown signs of strength in recent weeks, but the middle third of the season was a real struggle as they took a while to adjust to the promotions of Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso, along with the season-ending injury to Tim Tebow. The division may seem out of reach, but right now they sit a half game behind the third-place Reading Phillies, and who doesn’t want to beat THEM?!

The RP’s are just underway right now, with the bump mounted by Harol Gonzalez, a strong pitcher in the A’s but who hasn’t yet found his feet in AA.

Jhoan Urena last night against The Hartford Yard Goats

First Inning: Grand slam.

Third Inning: Solo homer.

Sixth Inning: Grand slam.

Yeah, he made outs his last two trips to the plate, but nine RBI is a pretty good couple of weeks, and the Rumble Ponies walked off with a 12-2 win.

For fun and games and romance, guess the last Binghamton player to hit three homers in a game.

My main memory of Daniel Murphy in 2008 is a tie game against the Cubs at Shea where he led off one of the late innings with a triple, only to get stranded at third. The failure to bring him home stuck with me as the Mets just missed the playoffs for the second straight season.

My last Shea game. That was a rough night all around.

Wow, Murphy's leadoff triple was in the ninth inning. Then David Wright strikes out, and the Cubs intentionally walk both Delgado and Beltran. Ryan Church grounds to second but they get the force at home. And Ramon Castro strikes out. And the Cubs then score three runs in the top of the tenth.

The losing pitcher was L. Ayala. I have no memory of who he might have been.

Luis Ayala: Acquired from Washington in mid August for Anderson Hernandez, and became the Mets closer for the last weeks of 2008, as a torn UCL ended Billy Wagner's season.

Omar Minaya's lesson from seeing his big investment in a "proven closer" blow up in the team's face was to go out and get two proven closers for 2009.

Binghamton won a wild one tonight, with Franklyn Kilome getting hit by a pitch in the top of the third and then getting tossed after returning the favor to Hartford pitcher Ryan Castellani in the bottom of the inning.

Jhoan Urena (again), Joey Terdoslavich, and pinch-hitter Will Toffey all homered, but the Ponies had to hang on for a one run win in the ninth as the Yard Goats loaded the bases with one out against Joshua Torres before he got them on a grounder/force-at-home and a strikeout looking.

How strange that you should invoke this play yesterday, and then last night, the New Murphy, Jeff McNeil, pulled off the same dubious accomplishment against the same team.

Baseball America lists four ponies on its top 20 prospects list:

8. Peter Alonso, 1B, NYM
10. Andres Gimenez, SS, NYM
12. Justin Dunn, RHP, NYM
20. Jeff McNeil, 2B, NYM

Alonso (14) and McNeil (17) are also on their top 20 PCL list.

Fat, drunk and fourth place is no way to go through life, but ultimately that was the fate of your 2018 Binghamton Rumble Ponies. They were never really the same team after the promotions of Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso. The Mets deserve some credit, not merely pushing some guys up from Columbia to replace but brought in indy league star Josh Allen and big-league vet Joey Terdaslovich, respectively, to replace the two breakout stars, but those holes were never quite filled, and the two return to the free agent list this winter. In late summer, former footballer Tim Tebow surprisingly emerged as something of an emerging offensive star, before a broken wrist ended his season, and the last hopes of Bingo didn’t last much longer.

But there were others emerging. Shortstop Levi Michael, another indy league refugee, OPS’d at .861 with some power and some speed before he too went down with a wrist injury. Outfielder Jhoan Urena came on strong late with an .854 OPS after the All-Star Break. Still struck out too much, but he probably secured himself a ticket to Syracuse, although I think he first has to survive the Rule 5 draft.

Anchoring the rotation was a bittersweet role for Mickey Jannis. On the one hand, it was probably his best season yet, knuckling up a 3.60 ERA over 142 innings. On the other hand, he opened the season in Las Vegas, got hit hard in his first two starts, took his demotion like a man, and never got called back despite his success. Yeah, knuckleballers can bloom late, but Mick is 30 and has now thrown almost all of 3 1/2 seasons for Binghamton. He was a free agent last season and re-signed, but if somebody else gives him a chance this year, I think he’s going to jump ship.

Nabil Crismatt (8-6, 3.59 ERA) in 2/3 of a season, and Justin Dunn (6-5, 4.22 ERA in half a season) also showed themselves to be rotation assets. But the real excitement came out of the pen, as Joshua Torres grabbed the bull by the horns, winning 9 games against 0 losses (!!) as he threw 45 1/3 innings, striking out 58 and walking but 14, for an ERA of 1.19. (In direct contrast, former prospect Harol Gonzalez but up an opposite line of 0-9 / 7.79, and somehow managed to avoid the reaper.

The Rumble Ponies set an all-time attendance record in 2018, and Syracuse giving Met fans two places to stop on a swing upstate (three, counting Cooperstown), that trend is sure to continue. Organizational big shots Dunn, Andres Gimenez, David Peterson and Anthony Kay look to join the fun in The Valley of Opportunity in 2019.

There was a lot of success going around, but little of it happened a the same time, allowing for them to make a sustained run, and little of it happened in the outfield, excepting six weeks or so of Tim Tebow. Champ Stuart and Patrick Biondi continue to be a yin and yang of centerfield ineptitude. Both are blazingly fast and both struggle every year to achieve an OPS of .600. One is black, and the other white, and one is lefty and the other righty, so maybe if they are ever healthy at the same time, they can platoon together and create something more credible, or perhaps approaching credible. But at least they remain in the system. Gene Cone and Ian Strom got they asses released, and Jhoan Urena, Kevin Taylor, John Mora all become minor league free agents.
