Sadly, I am not adopting David Thompson to be a loving provider. My therapist says I am doing it to fulfill a selfish need in myself, to try to patch a pain in my heart that was created when David Wright's body betrayed him. My therapist told me not to do this, to work on me instead, and said this adoption is akin to someone who lost a pet going to the shelter to look for a pet just like the one that died to try to fill a void that will never, ever be filled. If this is a mistake, a rebound adoption, so be it. I can't be complacent any longer. My therapist is not going to be happy with me.

So, hello, David Wri... Thompson. Pleased to meet you. I see you are a 6-foot tall, caucasian third baseman who both hits and throws from the right side. I like that. It comforts me. Tell me about your parents? Was your dad a cop? That's cool.

I see the Yankees drafted you in 2012 but (I imagine) you said to them, "Go to Hell, I will never play for your bullshit organization!". I knew I liked you way back then, but when the Mets drafted you out of college in 2014 and (I imagine) you said to them, "I can't wait to wear the blue and orange and put together a long, storied career as a reliable professional who never once embarrasses the organization," well I knew you had the chance to be special.

FanGraphs has twice labeled you one of baseball's most compelling fringe prospects. I guess that's good.

In 2017, you hit .263/.325/.429(.754) at AA Binghamton, with 29 doubles, 16 homers, 69 RBI, and 8 steals for good measure. That's pretty similar to a line David Wright put up in St. Lucie way back when.

But I shouldn't let myself think like that.
I'm projecting again.
I'm sorry.

I'm curious what you look like. Are you clean-shaven? Do you have an earnest smile? I googled "David Thompson" and I'm not sure which one is you. Do you look like like an old-time Canadian trapper? I'm nearly certain the basketball player isn't you.

Just the same, maybe it's better to not get too close to you too soon.

You're definitely blocked by Todd Frazier. And Asdrubal Cabrera or Jose Reyes, if Frazier is hurt. And maybe Phillip Evans. And even Jhoan Urena?

Are you even good? Should I open myself up to you? Will you ever even reach Queens? I'm scared, David Thompson, I'm scared.

MLB.com lists you as the 24th best prospect in the organization. That seems... safe.

I am choosing to adopt you.
I am choosing to not compare you to any other similarly profiled Met third baseman named David.
I am choosing to support you for you.

David, welcome to the family.

I like Thompson. He puts up RBI numbers that outstrip his rate stats. I don't necessarily conclude anything there, but it bears watching.

He is an intriguing, slightly older (25 in August) prospect. Homie gotta draw a few more walks, though. .318 OBP in 1238 minor league PAs ain't gonna get him the long look.

I saw him in spring training and he looked like a ballplayer if that's helpful. Size and shape and how he carries himself and wears his socks and stuff.

He does have the name of a jobber wrestler you know is never going to beat the exotically named villian he's matched up against.

Found a vid of my new boy David Thompson that was way more interesting than I thought it would be. His interviewer is The Most Scottsdale Chick of All-Time, and she gets him to open up on A-Rod (and Cameron Diaz!) and NCAA violations (!?). He also briefly discusses THE PLAN and waxes on his love of Jesus and golf. Now to find a vid of him swinging a baseball bat or running or something.

And here is David Thompson taking BP hacks to some shitty pop-country. Looks like he is a #8 and wore #88 in the AFL. I like a man with conviction.

Re-assigned after a solid spring showing of .348/.464/.391 (.856 OPS) in 23 ABs.

529 PA at AA last year, so I'm guessing it's Vegas, baby, for this dude.

I checked the Vegas AAA roster to see if that's where my dude was assigned, but turns out he was sent back to AA again. There is currently only one player listed as "3B" on the Vegas roster blocking my adoptee... and it's my other adoptee, the offensively-challenged, defier-of-all-odds, Dale Burdick.

Kid's off to a bit of an underwhelming start at Vegas, hitting .281/.349/.368 (.718) with zero homers so far. But the PCL heals all hitters' wounds, so as long as he plays, I'm not too worried about those numbers staying down. Do the thing, young man.

Ah, good find. I didn't know he had thoracic outlet, too.

And what a quote:

"I love the Mets organization; they've treated me great," he said. "They're always lifting us up."

Update time. Since Thompson broke his hand, he hasn't seen much action this year and has turned in just a .673 OPS in 86 plate appearances. Those footsteps my boy is hearing might belong to newly acquired Will Toffey. Get better! Get some hits!

Pretty much a lost season for my mini-David Wright adoptee. Broken hand pretty much wiped his season and he finished with a .708 OPS in only 73 PA (22 games) at AAA Vegas. Looks like he got a measly 3 games at Brooklyn before the season ended.

Heal fast, my dude. Winter league action starting soon.
