Image courtesy of USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect - Gary Gill Hill Shown The second piece of the New York Mets’ 2026 sell-off is out the door, as right-hander Freddy Peralta moves to the Tampa Bay Rays. As with all the deals team president David Stearns will make between now and the 6 p.m. ET Monday trade deadline, prospects comprise the return. In this deal, Stearns has plucked two who appear to fit the profile that he favors. In exchange for seven weeks of Peralta, the Mets on Sunday acquired three minor leaguers: outfielder Aidan Smith, right-hander Gary Gill Hill and infielder Emilien Pitre. None of them were ranked in MLB Pipeline’s overall Top 100 or Rays Top 10. Smith was ranked highest at 15th among Rays prospects, followed by Hill at 26th and Pitre at 27th. So, what will each player bring to the Mets’ organization? A quick rundown: Aidan Smith Smith, 22, has not advanced past Single-A in his five pro seasons since being drafted by the Seattle Mariners out of a Texas high school in 2023. This year, the 6-1, 190-pound center fielder settled at High-A Bowling Green, where he put together a .215/.283/.410 slash line with 10 home runs in 228 plate appearances. Prospect Savant puts his hard-hit percentage in the 83rd percentile and his barrel rate in the 76th percentile among High-A hitters. But while he hits the ball hard, he doesn’t hit it enough. Strikeouts are a real problem (32.0 percent K rate at Bowling Green, 27.9 percent for his career). His walk rate is in the 43rd percentile. Speed is not a problem, however. He had back-to-back seasons of 41 stolen bases in 2023 and 2024. A hamstring injury delayed his 2026 season debut to early May, one reason he’s at 16 steals in early August. Smith is on his third organization since being drafted. The Mariners sent him to the Rays in the Randy Arozarena trade in July 2024. Now, he’s headed to the Mets, where he brings the type of athleticism Stearns desires. Gary Gill Hill Hill, 21, is a local kid; he went to John F. Kennedy Prep in Somers, N.Y., in Westchester County. The Rays took him out of that school in the sixth round of the 2022 draft. He has advanced to Double-A Montgomery in his fourth pro season, working a regular turn for the Biscuits. His overall numbers there were underwhelming: a 1.39 WHIP, a 17.7 strikeout rate, a 2.9 percent home run rate, and a .305 opponents’ batting average. On the plus side, some of the peripherals are, well, plus. He stays in the zone, as evidenced by his 4.1 percent walk rate (96th percentile among Double-A hurlers) and near-the-top ranks in strike percentage (95th percentile) and zone percentage (96th percentile). In fact, he has almost as many walks (14) as homers allowed (10) at Montgomery. Also, his ground ball rate is in the 76th percentile. Hill also has international experience after pitching twice for Great Britain in this year’s World Baseball Classic. Emilien Pitre Pitre, 23, was the Rays’ second-round pick in the 2024 draft out of the University of Kentucky by way of Canada (he’s a Quebec native). He is primarily a second baseman, with 26 games of experience at shortstop. He has been excellent at the dish since his promotion to Double-A in mid-June: a .323/.451/.492 slash line (152 wRC+) in 163 plate appearances for Montgomery. The power isn’t quite there (three home runs, 14 extra-base hits total), but the speed sure is (11 steals, although in 18 attempts). Again, that’s something Stearns covets. And, his bat-to-ball skills are off the charts: 70 walks to 40 strikeouts in 384 PAs between two levels this season, and a 30:17 ratio at Double-A. His K and whiff rates are in the 98th percentile among Double-A hitters, his walk rate is in the 94th percentile, and his Z-contact rate is in the 95th percentile. It all adds up to a .418 wOBA with the Biscuits. The 5-11, 185-pound Pitre seems to fit exactly the “Brewers East” mold Stearns seems to have cast as Mets POBO. View full article

There were signs last year the 23-year-old infielder out of the University of Tennessee could bang. He had a .450 slugging percentage between rookie ball, Single-A and High-A; he’s up to .494 this year despite an 85-point dip in batting average (.307 to .222). The parent Mets are hoping the homers aren't a bizarre outlier and that they’ve added a big-time thumper from the right side. Amick’s Binghamton bow ended in a split. The Rumble Ponies won the opener 10-5. Elsewhere in the organization . . . Clay Holmes’ final audition for teams ahead of Monday’s MLB trade deadline will take place in Brooklyn, not Queens. The right-hander will make a minor league rehab start for the Cyclones on Sunday rather than be activated to pitch for the big-league Mets against the Miami Marlins. (Robert Stock will come up from Syracuse for that assignment instead.) Holmes will throw around 70 to 75 pitches, MLB.com reported Saturday. He wants to be fully stretched out before he returns to the majors — “wherever that is,” he said, per The Associated Press. Syracuse lost 3-1 to Rochester. Jonathan Santucci made his Triple-A debut for the Mets, with mixed results. Hayden Senger homered for Syracuse’s run. Brooklyn fell to Winston-Salem 6-3. Jacob Reimer singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored a run for the Cyclones. St. Lucie doubled up Dunedin 6-3 in 10 innings. Wyatt Vincent’s sacrifice fly broke the tie in the 10th. DSL Mets Blue lost 13-2 to DSL Blue Jays Red. Dayron Oramas and Michalle Mercedes drove in the Mets’ runs. New York Mets Transactions New York Mets selected the contract of RHP Kevin Herget from Syracuse Mets. New York Mets optioned RHP Xzavion Curry to Syracuse Mets. Santucci's Syracuse Debut Has A Bit Of Everything Santucci made his first Triple-A start since being promoted from Double-A earlier in the week. It was an adventure. He needed 90 pitches (52 strikes) to get through four innings. He walked five, struck out seven, and allowed two runs and five hits. Both Rochester runs scored in the second inning, on an RBI triple and an RBI double. Senger cut the deficit to 2-1 with his ninth home run of the season and his first since July 2. Rochester answered in the bottom half with a run against Nate Lavender. Two rehab notes: Dedniel Núñez pitched a scoreless seventh with a strikeout, while Mike Tauchman played left field and finished 0-for-3. He also walked and scored on D'Andre Smith's three-run homer during a four-run first. Matt Rudick homered in the seventh for Binghamton's final run. Billy Amick has learned how to hit the ball out of the park in his third minor-league season. It appears he will keep applying those lessons with his new team. Amick, one of two players acquired by the New York Mets from the Minnesota Twins on Friday in a trade for left-handed reliever A.J. Minter, homered in his debut for Double-A Binghamton on Saturday in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Reading. The two-run blast in the seventh inning cut the Rumble Ponies’ deficit to two in an eventual 5-4 loss. Amick is up to 24 homers this season between Binghamton and Double-A Wichita, quite the power surge for a player who had seven homers in 2024 and 2025 combined in about three dozen fewer plate appearances. On a percentage basis, Amick’s 6.3 homer rate in 2026 is more than triple the 2.0 percent rate of his first two seasons. There were signs last year the 23-year-old infielder out of the University of Tennessee could bang. He had a .450 slugging percentage between rookie ball, Single-A and High-A; he’s up to .494 this year despite an 85-point dip in batting average (.307 to .222). R.J. Gordon turned in his most efficient start of the season Friday, just as the organization is shaking up its major league pitching staff. The No. 18 prospect in Grand Central Mets' July prospect top 20 went seven innings at Reading, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked none and struck out seven. Most impressively, he did it on just 89 pitches because he lived in the zone all night (62 strikes). A consequence of that command was Gordon being touched up for two home runs, but the organization will take the ratio. He has slowly built up his workload up after suffering a lat injury in the spring. His stats have suffered as a result of so many short outings: Friday's start lowered his ERA with the Ponies to 6.02 (he rehabbed at St. Lucie before joining Binghamton). He appears to be fully back after working deep into a game for the first time this year. As for the game, the Ponies' bullpen gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth and two more in the bottom of the ninth, and Binghamton lost 6-5. Elsewhere in the organization: Syracuse lost 10-1 to Rochester. The Red Wings scored nine runs in the third inning to decide it. Jihwan Bae broke up the Red Wings' shutout bid with an RBI grounder in the ninth. Brooklyn was blown out 14-4 by Winston-Salem. The Cyclones fell into a hole early as the Dash scored six runs in the second inning. Yonatan Henriquez homered in the loss. St. Lucie was shut out 5-0 by Dunedin. The Blue Jays scored all their runs in the bottom of the eighth. Mets starter Ethan Lanthier allowed one hit over four innings. DSL Mets Blue and DSL Mets Orange split their games. Blue lost 10-6 to the DSL Marlins, while Orange routed DSL Tigers 1, 9-2. New York Mets Transactions New York Mets traded LHP A.J. Minter to Minnesota Twins for minor league INFs Bruin Agbayani and Billy Amick. New York Mets recalled RHP Xzavion Curry from Syracuse Mets. New York Mets recalled RHP Jonathan Pintaro from Syracuse Mets. New York Mets placed LHP Cionel Pérez on the 15-day injured list retroactive to July 30, 2026. Left forearm strain. New York Mets sent RHP Austin Warren on a rehab assignment to Brooklyn Cyclones. Nine-Run Third Buries Syracuse Mets starter Jack Weisenburger gave up one hit over the first two innings, but then allowed the first six batters in the third to reach base. Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases, and consecutive two-run doubles made it 4-0. A two-run home run followed, and Weisenburger was done. Dan Hammer came on and allowed a single and walk to make it eight in a row, before recording a strikeout. Another walk loaded the bases, and after a second strikeout, a two-run single and an RBI single made it a nine-run inning. Matt Seelinger, Joe Jacques and Ofreidy Gómez combined for five innings of one-run ball after the third. Syracuse's lone run came when Jihwan Bae grounded into a force-out with the bases loaded in the ninth, scoring Cristian Pache, who had walked. Reading got one back in the bottom half on a solo homer. JT Schwartz led off the eighth with a home run for a 5-3 advantage. Reading answered again with a run in the bottom half. Brooklyn tacked on a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Obispo was sharp but just failed to qualify for the win. He was taken out after 4 2/3 innings of one-hit, one-walk ball. He was charged with a run after Gregori Louis walked in an inherited runner with two outs. Brooklyn finished with 14 hits, eight of them for extra bases (five doubles, a triple, and two homers). Jonah Tong isn't going anywhere at the MLB trade deadline, except maybe back to New York. With the big-league Mets having officially begun their pitching sell-off, the time is growing closer for Tong (No. 1 in Grand Central Mets' latest prospect Top 20) to get another shot in the Show. If he does receive the call in the next few days, he'll be coming in with confidence, based off his outing Thursday night. Tong allowed two hits, walked two and struck out seven over five scoreless innings as he led Triple-A Syracuse to a 2-0 win and a doubleheader split with Rochester. His fastball topped out at 97.9 mph, per MLB Pipeline. He was efficient, with 56 strikes in 89 pitches (63 percent). That's significant for a pitcher who struggles to throw strikes: his Triple-A walk rate this year is a too-high 13.3 percent, although the 27.8 percent strikeout rate mitigates it some. It came after Jacob Reimer (No. 6) homered with one out for a 1-0 lead. Colin Houck tripled to open the second and scored on Chase Meggers' single for a 5-0 lead. The short version of Mitch Voit’s Double-A debut: Well, that was easy. No, it wasn’t easy, but Voit (No. 7 in Grand Central Mets’ Top 20) looked like he belonged as he played shortstop and led off for Binghamton at Reading on Wednesday. He got to work right away with a long double over the center fielder’s head on the second pitch of the game. Ready or not, Clay Holmes is on his way back to the New York Mets. He’ll spend the rest of this week waiting to see when and for whom his next start will be. The right-hander completed an abbreviated minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with four scoreless innings for Single-A St. Lucie at Dunedin. He allowed two hits and two walks and struck out three. He threw 59 pitches, his biggest workload in his three rehab outings, with 37 for strikes. MLB.com reported that Holmes reached 94.1 mph with his sinker. As of now, he’s lined up to make his next start Sunday, one day ahead of the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline, with his pitch count around 70. If he reports no problems after Tuesday’s start, trade talks figure to move to full steam ahead, and Sunday may never come into play; either the Mets will deal him before then, or they’ll hold back one of their top trade assets to extract maximum value. Holmes pitched for a St. Lucie squad that was overhauled earlier in the week amid a series of late-season promotions by the organization. Ten players were called up from the FCL Mets on Monday, and six of them were in the starting lineup Tuesday. All six contributed to a 14-6 victory. The full list of promotions, per the affiliates’ respective transactions pages: To Syracuse from Binghamton (1): LHP Jonathan Santucci (No. 8 prospect in Grand Central Mets’ Top 20) To Binghamton from Brooklyn (2): RHP Noah Hall, SS/2B Mitch Voit (No. 7) To Brooklyn from St. Lucie (6): RHP Joel Diaz, OF Randy Guzman (No. 14), SS/3B Antonio Jimenez (No. 17), C Chase Meggers, RHP Emilio Obispo, INF/OF Trey Snyder To St. Lucie from FCL Mets (10): OF Bohan Adderley, OF Kuhio Aloy, INF Dylan Carey, INF Vladi Gomez, OF Aiden Robbins, C Yovanny Rodriguez, INF Kooper Schulte, OF John Smith III, C Ryan Tayman, OF Wyatt Vincent. Robbins, Tayman, Aloy, Smith and Schulte were all taken by the Mets in the MLB Draft earlier this month. Elsewhere in the organization: Syracuse lost to Rochester 6-5. Ronny Mauricio and Nick Morabito (No. 5) homered in the loss. Mike Tauchman, still on rehab, went 0-for-5. Tobias Myers gave up five runs in the second inning. Voit’s Binghamton debut was postponed because of rain in Reading, Pa. The clubs will make up the game Saturday as part of a twilight doubleheader. Game 1 is set for 4:30 p.m. ET. Brooklyn dropped a 10-6 decision to Winston-Salem. Guzman, Jimenez and Snyder all were in the lineup for the Cyclones. Rehabbing big-leaguer Andy Ibañez had three hits and scored a run. DSL Mets Blue topped the DSL Cardinals 5-4. Sanchez and Oramas each had two hits and two RBIs. Marquez allowed a run and no hits over three innings. DSL Orange lost 6-5 to DSL Arizona Red. Wandy Asigen (No. 12) hit his first professional home run, a solo shot in the fifth inning. New York Mets Transactions No Roster Moves Morabito, Mauricio Supply The Offense For Syracuse The M&M Boys combined for four hits, five RBIs and four runs scored. They started early as they put Syracuse ahead 1-0 in the first. Morabito opened the game with a single and later scored on Mauricio's sacrifice fly. Rochester answered with five runs in the second against Myers. Four straight singles produced the tying run, a forceout brought home the go-ahead run, a wild pitch made it 3-1, and a two-run double closed out the inning. Myers left after 1 2/3 innings. Morabito cut into the deficit in the third with a two-run home run to left-center. Mauricio sliced it further in the seventh with a two-run home run to left. Syracuse couldn't do anything after that. Jacob Reimer is making his way back from a groin injury that kept him out of action for about a month. He took another step forward Sunday. Jonathan Santucci was really looking forward to his start Saturday for Double-A Binghamton against Portland, because of who his mound opponent would be. Fellow high-level prospect Anthony Eyanson was on the hill for the SeaDogs; Santucci (No. 8 on Grand Central Mets' list of top 20 Mets prospects) said before the game that he grew up wanting to face "the best." On Thursday, the New York Mets got their first look at Clay Holmes in a game setting since the right-hander went down with a leg fracture 2 1/2 months ago. So did all the clubs who are interested in trading for him. Holmes started for Triple-A Syracuse against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The final line was uninspiring: 2 1/3 innings, three hits, two runs (both earned), two walks and two strikeouts. As might be expected, his command was subpar: just 28 of his 51 pitches were for strikes. He was strong in the first inning, getting a grounder to the mound and two strikeouts, including one of Spencer Jones, who broke Holmes' fibula with a comebacker on May 15. In the second, he allowed a double, a walk, and two well-hit fly balls as Scranton scored its first run. In the third, he gave up a leadoff walk, a hard-hit single, and a RBI bloop single by Jones. After another well-struck fly was caught for an out, Holmes departed, having reached his pitch limit. Holmes is a prime acquisition target ahead of the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline. He was supposed to begin his rehab with a start for High-A Brooklyn on July 18, but the game was rained out. He got his work in with a bullpen session. Interested clubs will have to evaluate him on just two rehab starts -- Thursday's game and a game next week. New York interim manager Andy Green told reporters (per MLB.com) that if Holmes came out of Thursday's outing feeling good, he might need just a second rehab start before being activated off the 60-day injured list. Elsewhere in the organization: Binghamton lost to Portland 3-2. Corey Collins' pinch-hit, two-run home run in the ninth got the Rumble Ponies close. New York Mets Minor League Report: The Clay Holmes Showcase Begins
Tom Gatto posted an article in Minor Leagues
On Thursday, the New York Mets got their first look at Clay Holmes in a game setting since the right-hander went down with a leg fracture 2 1/2 months ago. Binghamton batters struck out 18 times in the game. Brooklyn lost to Jersey Shore 6-5 in 12 innings, spoiling a big game at the plate by Trace Willhoite (home run, three hits, two RBIs, stolen base). The New York Mets have filled their Triple-A roster mostly with veteran position players to ensure organizational depth. Many of those players have been called upon this season as injuries hit the major-league roster. If the Mets' trade deadline sell-off succeeds, there may be more callups. Luis Robert Jr., Tyrone Taylor and perhaps others will be gone, and the returns for them will likely be lower-level prospects. That means there's still a carrot in front of players like Eric Wagaman and MJ Melendez. Both players made contributions to the big-league club before being sent down as guys returned from the IL. Wagaman got himself noticed Wednesday with a go-ahead, two run single in the eighth inning for Syracuse against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Melendez scored on the hit, the run that gave Syracuse the lead. The Mets' bullpen made the hit stand up in a 5-4 victory. New York has perennial prospect Ronny Mauricio playing at Syracuse, too, but he'd fit best in the majors if the Mets deal an infielder. Melendez can fill an open spot in the outfield. Wagaman can play all four corners. All three will be grinding to get another shot in the bigs. Elsewhere in the organization: Binghamton edged Portland 2-1. Corey Collins drove in both Rumble Ponies runs with a two-out single in the sixth. Starter Channing Austin and long reliever Dakota Hawkins each went three innings. Brooklyn lost to Jersey Shore 5-3 on a walk-off home run in the ninth. The Cyclones tied the game in the top half when Jersey Shore’s pitcher dropped a throw that would have ended the game. St. Lucie fell 12-9 to Fort Myers. The Mets led 7-5 after five innings, but the Mighty Mussels answered with two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh. Trey Snyder had three hits and three RBIs. The FCL Mets shut out the FCL Marlins 1-0. Anthony Frobose’s home run in the fifth inning held up as the winning run. Camden Lohman struck out six in a four-inning bulk relief effort. Mets Transactions No Roster Moves Syracuse Makes Most Of Opportunities The Mets made their four hits count against the RailRiders. Before Wagaman's game-deciding single, Mauricio homered in the fourth inning to cut the Mets' deficit to 2-1. Syracuse went on to score three in the frame. The other two runs came in on a Wagaman groundout and a throwing error by the pitcher onding Jihwan Bae's drag bunt. Mauricio doubled in the eighth to set up the winning rally. MJ Melendez and Nick Morabito walked to load the bases. Wagaman then came through with a liner to right-center. Five Rumble Ponies pitchers combined to hold the Sea Dogs to four hits. Piggybacking, or having two pitchers work multiple innings back-to-back, is one of the ways clubs ease workloads and prevent hurlers from facing an opponent's lineup a third time. St. Lucie used the strategy to near perfection on Tuesday night. Conner Ware and Emilio Obispo combined to throw seven innings of two-run ball as the Mets defeated Fort Myers 8-2. Ware started and went three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four. He faced 13 batters. Obispo worked the next four frames, allowing two runs on two hits, with three walks and three strikeouts. He faced 18 batters, exactly twice through the order. Limiting both pitchers' innings is understandable based on where they are in their careers. Obispo, 19, missed all of last season with an injury. He has not gone more than five innings in a game in 2026, and has thrown 53 1/3 innings total. Ware, 22, is in his first professional season after being drafted in the 15th round by New York out of LSU last year. He leads the team with 57 2/3 innings pitched, with five also his single-game high. Elsewhere on the farm: Syracuse turned in an ugly performance in losing 13-5 to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Mets committed six errors, walked eight batters, and allowed 12 hits. Despite all that, they only trailed 4-3 after 5½ innings. Binghamton’s bullpen wasted a late-inning comeback in the club's 4-3 loss to Portland. Garrett Stratton served up a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth after the Rumble Ponies had tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Brooklyn’s game vs. Jersey Shore was rained out. It will be made up as part of a twi-night doubleheader Friday beginning at 5:35 p.m. The FCL Mets were blown out 15-3 by the FCL Astros. Wyatt Vincent had two hits and an RBI in the loss. DSL Mets Blue suffered a worse defeat, 20-4 to the DSL Marlins. Adrian La Rosa hit his first home run, a two-run shot in the seventh. DSL Mets Orange outlasted the DSL Phillies 7-5 in 10 innings. Two run-scoring wild pitches and then a two-run single by Cesar Acosta in the top of the 10th were enough to withstand a Phils rally in the bottom of the half. Mets Transactions New York Mets recalled RHP Daniel Duarte from Syracuse Mets. New York Mets optioned RHP Xzavion Curry to Syracuse Mets. Syracuse Sloppy In Blowout Loss The six errors look bad, but 11 of the 13 runs the Mets allowed were earned, so they weren't completely responsible for the lopsided result. One of the unearned runs scored against starter Jack Wenninger, who went the first three innings. He allowed five hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks. The other one was charged to Ofreidy Gomez, who worked the fourth. That run made it 4-0, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Syracuse answered with three runs in the top of the fifth. RBI singles by Ben Rortvedt and Vidal Brujan halved the deficit, and a bases-loaded walk by MJ Melendez made it a one-run game. Melendez walked three times in the contest. Then, the bullpen let the game get away. Nate Lavender and Jonathan Pintaro combined to allow four runs in the sixth. After Lavender gave up a solo homer, Pintaro came on and added to the misery. He committed a throwing error on a bunt, which brought in a run, and later threw a wild pitch that brought in another run. After the Mets clawed back to 8-5 in the top of the eighth, Joey Gerber was charged with five runs in the bottom half while not recording an out. It broke the game open in the third with four runs. Guzman drew a bases-loaded walk after a successful challenge, forcing in Julio Zayas.
