  2. Fine, I'm a pinko-commie scum. Whatever. I hate it. My hatred of it stems from 'The Magic Is Back' campaign. I found that whole era to be just painful. Bill Gallo's horrific 1981 Yearbook cover didn't help. It's cheesy and it doesn't mean anything. It's a magician's hat with an apple coming out of it. How does a magician relate to the Mets exactly? It doesn't. 86 the friggin' thing already.

  4. Foster would be my guess.
  5. New York Times July 13, 2007 Injured Hand Sidelines Valentn By MICHAEL SACK SCHMIDT Amid the changes swirling around the Mets yesterday, the team announced that second baseman Jos Valentn had injured his right hand in an altercation in Puerto Rico during the All-Star Game break. Valentn said yesterday that, out of frustration, he thrust his hand into a wall at his office in Manati, P.R., during an argument about the sale of the baseball team he owns there. Valentn was taken for X-rays, which were negative. I lost control, Valentn said after the Mets 3-2 victory against the Reds last night. I just have a little bruise on my hand. That is it. I should be back in a couple of days. There is no problem throwing or nothing. It is just a little painful. Valentn, who is batting .243 with 3 home runs and 17 runs batted in, did not play last night. Rubn Gotay took his place in the lineup and went 2 for 4 with a home run and two runs batted in. Gotay, 24, has been an effective replacement for Valentn, batting .342 in 37 games. Valentn has played in only 44 games because of a partly torn ligament in his right knee. He has worn a brace since returning from the disabled list June 7. Valentn, 37, re-signed with the Mets for $3.8 million in the off-season. If he reaches 400 plate appearances, he will receive a $4.3 million option for next season. He has had 152 plate appearances with 74 games remaining. Also, the Mets signed the veteran infielder Marlon Anderson to a minor league contract yesterday, and they designated Julio Franco, one of their primary pinch-hitters, for assignment. Anderson, a second baseman who played for the Mets in 2005, has often been used as a pinch-hitter. Anderson was released July 9 by the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 23 games, he hit .231 (6 for 26). He reported to Class AAA New Orleans yesterday.

  13. I stayed up to watch 'The Bronx Is Burning' and thought it was really good. Oliver Platt and Turturro were excellent. Sunjata ('Franco' from 'Rescue Me') is I think the name of the actor playing Reggie and while he isn't as well cast as some of the others (the guy playing Munson for instance was as close to a dead ringer - no pun intended - for the guy as you can get), he definitely grew on me. After the episode was over they did a 3 minute 'backstory' on the writer who did the 'Sport Magazine' piece on Reggie that was the origin of the 'straw that stirs the drink' comment. In the episode that writer played himself and commented on the interview he had with Reggie afterwards. I was 12 that summer and away at summer camp so I was not in the thick of those sweltering tumultuous few months but I remember those Yankee teams well and seeing the Abe Beame press conferences and The Daily News' .'44 Caliber Killer' headlines definitely brought me back. I was waiting to see some green and white police cars with the dome-type lights on the roof careening through Harlem. Good stuff, I really liked it.

  20. From today's NYTimes: ]ALOU WILL BE RE-EVALUATED Moises Alou, out since May 13 with a strained left quadriceps, is scheduled to be re-evaluated Monday by Dr. David Altchek, the team’s medical director. The Mets hope that Alou will return by the end of July. The print edition of the Times had a little more info. The injury was desribed as a tear not a strain and it noted that Alou is feeling 'very good'. Whatever that's worth.

  22. Watching the game and biting my nails to the quick thinking that Ollie's next pitch in the strike zone (if there was going to be a next pitch in the zone) was going to land on The Grand Concourse, made it all the more befuddling to hear the postgame commentary both on YES and SNY lauding his performance. Sure he allowed no runs but that was only because the Yankees kept swinging at ball four. Had they been a bit more patient this game could've been very ugly. On the flip side - had Delgado just met the ball with bat it could've been a blowout for the good guys.
  23. But didn't Reyes start out pretty slow last year before he turned it WAAAAY up?
  24. When the Mets are going bad I don't like reading the papers or listening to the radio. In general I don't like people telling me what I already know. Prolly why I haven't posted anything in a few days. Anyway - for some strange reason I feel pretty good about them going into this series. There is no rational for this. The games are in the Boogie-Down, The Yankees are white-fucking-hot and the Mets are cold as Leona Helmsley in an igloo. But you know what? I think the Mets are the better team, they've simply had a bad two weeks and this could be just the tonic to turn them around. A high-profile series where everyone is basically expecting them to get their clocks cleaned. The Mets have hit Clemens in the past, and should really be able to hit Clippard this time around. On the other side - Ollie just had his once in 5 starts bad outing so that's out of the way, Glavine is pissed and has something to prove and you know El Duque probably can't wait to face them. Bring it on Skanks!
