Hopefully it's cut and dry obvious. I'm worried that Davis will (just to use statistics for the sake of comparison) hit like .240 with 10 home runs and Murphy hits .260 with 15. Then you get in the sticky situation where Murphy is clearly better _right now_ , but Davis is playing well enough that nobody wants him to get sent down. I guess it'd help if we had a definitive date on Murphy's return as well. I just don't like the reactionary aspect of the move (that hasn't happened yet). Davis on April 5th, or not till midseason seemed to be the wisest move. is 12 more games really that much more telling?
  2. speaking of subtle racist digs, think they bring up Hudson's cry of discrimination?
  3. Ashie62 wrote: Not a shocker. I've kinda forgotten about Beltran and believe that his knee is "shot." It will be interesting to see if Fmart becomes an option in CF in 2010. This lack of communication is really fueling conspiracy theories about him not wanting to play, and about 'secret surgeries' that are worse than was reported. I've been trying to figure out what was the catalyst for him not to run on the 10th. Did he wake up and not feel right? From all reports he hasn't felt a day of pain since the surgery. Was biking the next day. was taking light bp recently. So why did he not run? Was there a test? Did he put pressure on the knee and the doctors not like his response? Are they being super-insane cautious with it? I've never been able to gleen what exactly would be required for him to resume baseball activities and I actually had hope that he'd be back in early may/late April at one point. At this point, until he runs and reports no pain/setbacks from that, it's hard to count on him for anything. I also think that if he has even one setback from that day, when he actually runs (provided that's soon), you bring up Fernando Martinez. (Provided he's still hitting well in the minors) I also use this philosophy with Murphy, who we should also have a date on soon. If he has a setback or say, he won't be back for the Phillies series, get me Ike. (Or at least Evans/Carter/Hessman/Keith instead of Jacobs or Cat)
  4. 4-7. that's a 4-7 record. Don't sell tonight short. Also, the positive runs scored thing is nice. Because our offense is slumping, and you _know_ Bay is going to be better, and Reyes is going to round into form. So if the pitching is true, which in Pelfrey's case definitely seems to be true. I'm so psyched for him, we're in for good times. Btw, if we massage the rotation properly (Santana on normal rest despite the off day) Pelfrey and Santana will both pitch against the Phillies. TheOldMole wrote: The trouble with hating the manager and the GM is you're always, in some small part of your psyche, rooting for your team to lose so you can be proved right. I hate the manager, and it's hard, but it's not quite like that. You're never actively routing for the manager, and even when he brings in the wrong guys or gives up outs, you're still routing for the guy he puts up there to succeed. It's much different though, for those that have decided they hate Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo. I do find myself struggling with the disgust/hope line though when guys like Jacobs come up sometimes though.
  5. I've never liked Citizen's Bank Ballpark, but the appeal (when I can afford it, May 1st, maybe not..) of 90 Mets games (+11 in October..*hopes*) to see live versus 81 is just too broad. Plus I have a friend that lives down there, so good excuse. There's a brewery on the way called Iron Hill that has some excellent beers and makes a great pre-game dinner if you're into that sorta thing. But ever since the rivalry really took off in 2008, the Subway Series intensity has drastically decreased for me. I could no longer hold up the Yankees fans as the epitome of all evil. I found myself thinking "At least they're New Yorkers.."

A real Met fan sidekick would call Kay on his bullshit more often. He's a disgrace. Same, but... well... Kay's the headliner. LaGreca calling him on his most egregious stuff-- and I've heard plenty, even as a non-listener-- would be like a parent on welfare mouthing off to her caseworker, wouldn't it? It's just not in his self-interest to do it too often. I think it's just that the shows seem almost listenable when Kay's not there. He doesn't really call him on anything, but he does often 'respectably' offer a different option, or thought, which Kay just shoots down and yells about, but at least he's probably watched the games and is borderline knowledgeable. I mean, even Somers and Beningo seem to reach Mets-hating lows sometimes, and often have factually incorrect information.
  7. Well Francesa does seem to take off most of the summer anyway. Just have someone there waiting for him when he gets back as his partner.
  8. "Calls to the booth is something we introduced in 2008,'' spokesman Andrew Fegyveresi said, "and our fans enjoy the unfiltered interaction, just as they enjoy the unfiltered and honest approach from our broadcast team. I particularly like that one. Michael Kay's an idiot, and the show would be much better if they let Don laGreca speak more. (YES might be better, despite him, if they had a regular set of hosts.) He's not great, but at least he's a Mets fan (as is Bonnie) and a wee big more honest. (and there more since Kay misses half his own show anyway) And actually watches the games. Kay only watches the games that happen to be on when he's not working, which is rare, so he just feeds off the lame media buzz to get his 'news' anyway. You'll notice I've listened a lot more to them, especially lately as they've had decent interviews and Francesa's talking NCAA a week after it's over, or 4 hours of horse racing or something.

Hessman's the Hank Aaron/Barry Bonds of the minor leagues isn't he?

You talking the 'sponsored results'? Aren't they mined out of the cookies/history of your computer? Maybe this is revealing some hidden love for the Yankees on your part? Is DerekJeter.jpg your desktop image?

Or go the Orlando Hudson route and claim the league is racist and that's why he didn't get as much money as he did. So far, Francoeur has helped Pelfrey pitch, seems like he makes a better lineup out than Manuel..he does everything!

  14. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: He's running now. No word, however, on how earnestly he's running. Also, I hear he's doing a reality show this summer for VH1, in which he deliberates between different fielder's gloves by taking them on a series of contrived dates and having casual sex with them while miked. Is Ben Roethlisburger going to guest star? I heard "light running" for Murphy. I heard him say he'd like to be back when the Mets come home next Monday/Tuesday but I don't know how/if that's realistic. I wnt to know what the rehab plan is. St. Lucie Mets games I'd presume. Or Bing? Obviously not going to take AB from Ike in Buffalo.

But I wouldn't care how badly a Mets announcer called the homers as long as he had plenty of opportunities to call them. At any rate, this thread made my day. It's not just the home run calls, or the homerism... it's the fact that the HR calls are but the tip of a gigantic iceberg of shtick. His game-calling is largely about him and the story he/the MFYs have decided upong, not about the actual game. He's unfunny, and he's kinda moralistic, and-- above all-- he's shtick-ier than Jackie Mason doing Henny Youngman jokes while waggling Groucho eyebrows and an exploding cigar. On a cruise ship called the "Lady of the Catskills." Wayne Hagin seems to have this disease at times Yeah maybe a little, but Hagin actually sees more that's actually going on than Sterling. And of course, the pairing with Howie makes it better.

I imagine he'll be replacing Cevernak or maybe Pridie on the Buffalo roster soon. I'd have to check, but I thought Evans was playing first? (Evans really has no future with this team, even if he did well, as he's at least second on the "prospect depth chart" at every position, and probably more like 5th on the chart) Figured he was in AA cause Davis is munching the wings at Duffs, err Buffalo, and Nick wouldn't get no AB.
  17. Seriously, this guy's still homeless? Come in out of the cold, Hyoo-rees, and into the Familia. That was my first thought when I saw the topic. This guy has been quietly touted as impending awesome for the last couple of months, if not longer.

Edgy DC wrote: Yeah, I can tell. But that's dangerous thinking, particularly on a week's evidence, and there are better options in house. At least I'm not one clamoring for a potentially unready Ike Davis and proclaiming him the savior. I would've had Evans on the roster over Jacobs anyway, (well, no, he was injured, but I'd have chosen Carter). Murphy is still possibly back in a week, but if he's not, and Jacobs/Tatis still really really suck..well, I definitely think you do something.

He's putting the bat on ball, regardless of where, right now. Tatis and Jacobs are creating stiff breezes, right now. Who knows how it would translate, right now, in 2010, to major league production, but why not Evans? why not try a different temporary fix? What about Catalanotto for a game (he's even on the roster?) Shawn Bowman, who's technically a 3B but obviously blocked there? (Guess not on that one.) I'm not even so much arguing for Nick Evans as i'm arguing for anything but Tatis/Jacobs.

Edgy DC wrote: If Mike Jacobs' 2009 is meaningful, so is Nick Evans'. We're grabbing a logical straws here. He played himself into his situation. If he put up that .211 season last year in the Major Leagues --- which would have been a greater accomplishment --- would you be arguing on his behalf? but he didn't. Mike Jacobs' 2009 is meaningful, but we also have years before that to go on. Major league years. Are you really telling me you think Jacobs/Tatis is really better than Evans? It's nitpicking. It's just a minor thing that I'd change, in part because Jacobs is a black hole of suck and Tatis, even if he's been decent off the bench for the Mets, isn't very good and even little change helps in my opinion. Maybe it's mostly a cosmetic change, but I'd rather try and fail with Evans for a week than Tatis/Jacobs. Just a personal preference. Jerry needs all the help we can get, so I'm gonna put that "try Evans" attitude out into the universe. maybe he'll hear it. :-P
  21. smg58 wrote: I agree. Like I said before, there were a few instances where Maine looked good yesterday. But he dealt with adversity about as poorly as you can. Maine's always been a bit of a headcase and too hard on himself. (Murphy too) Someone needs to smack 'em around a bit, tell him to relax, get laid, something like that. Apparently going out to a Nuggets game doesn't count. (Apparently most of the team did that Monday night. no idea if Maine did)

You shouldn't give Evans a shot based on what he's done in the past, but what you think he'll do in the future. If you think he has upside, which is what many of us that think it couldn't be worse than Jacobs/Tatis think. He played great in spring '09, didn't make the team, and admittedly beat himself up over it, but he did get himself together and start playing well again. He got called up, and despite the 60whatever AB he got, was very sparshly used, despite pretty much knowing guys like Reed and Sullivan would not make the team in 2010 anyway, so what could it hurt to play a young kid. Maybe you learn something else. This spring he got hampered by the forearm or whatever it was, or I do believe he would've had a chance to play onto the team after Murphy got hurt. However, it's not out of sight/out of mind. It's not like he's likely to be the savior, and it really seems like Jerry is making too many of the calls, and since he doesn't hear about or see Evans due to his busy schedule of (supposedly) managing baseball games, he's probably not on the radar.
