Gwreck wrote: I realize that Evans doesn't really hit right handed pitching but his career ML numbers against lefties: .322/.379/.512 (in 132 PAs); his MiLB numbers are also not shabby. I guess he gets the squeeze because Harris can hit lefty. Personally, I wonder if Evans is a better choice than Scott Hairston. Hairston plays CF. I guess Harris does too, but perhaps not as well?

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Edgy DC wrote: I'd certainly have no huge problems with them stashing Murphy and running with Evans. It'd be gutsy, it would. Harris better get his keystone skills pumping, though. That's what I'm saying. Let's see Muffy tear it up in Buffalo before we lose a versatile young hitter. Well, some think Evans will get through on waivers anyway, but I wouldn't want to lose him and I also wouldn't want to guarentee him a spot on the 25man all year (which would have to be the case if they put him on waivers and pulled him back)

Edgy DC wrote: Oh sure. Evans certainly isn't wiped out there. I meant, where I was being too kind? I mean, Murphy might not be an 8/10 at first, but I think evidence at hand suggests it's reasonable to think he's two clicks ahead of Evans. Evans has played only about 30 games at third, most of them in the low minors, and condiditons would have to be certainly more dire to put him at second than to put Murphy there. So I think it remains a tossup as far as useful versatility. the 2B is a huge deal as well, because Ike and Wright are so much more cemented than Emaus. Of course, Evans is theoretically better for RF, which is an injury concern. But there's more depth there in Hairston and Duda and even Martinez.
-
I still say I'd take Evans over Harris, but i imagine there's some personal bias there, I just don't like Harris and don't think he's very good. I'm not thinking Evans state is any more dire now than it was a week ago really. He's still got an outside shot.

Winners Win: The Triumph of Circular Logic at the Times
Ceetar replied to a topic in New York Mets Talk
Mike Tully, a former baseball writer, consults with coaches and athletes and has a blog, totalgameplan.com. I assume he's been upgraded to a 'drivel' writer? Oh, but he has a blog! -

Sure, you can't silence him. You can't silence the racist drunk on the bus that tells you the Mets are Los Mets and Beltran is scum. Doesn't mean you have to listen to him though.

Edgy DC wrote: People are going to keep bringing up anything inconsistent with their perception of Moneyball to hammer Alderson and Beane and others wtih. I mean, the idea that Mientkiewicz was asked to be a glove caddy for David Ortiz somehow discredits the body of work of Bill James? Come on. Right now a lot of peoples misunderstanding of Moneyball comes from understanding it through the Joe Morgan misunderstanding. I wonder how much worse that'll get when they misinterpret it through the Hollywood filter.

soupcan wrote: Emaus, a patient hitter with power potential who has been compared by some to Braves second-baseman Dan Uggla Granted, I've been in college basketball mode all winter and I don't really start to pay attention to spring training news and articles until right about now. I have followed the secondbase story from the periphery, but this is something I have not heard before. Emaus is truly projected to possibly have Uggla-type power? I don't think I've heard that either, not that I read much into those random comparisons of rookies. I mean, if Emaus, with his OBP, hit home runs like Uggla, he'd basically be Jason Giambi.

92-70. First place. (clinching on 9/25 against the Phillies, Santana pitches on ESPN Sunday Night baseball. Bobby V references the '00 team a lot during the broadcast) They'll go all the way, have the parade on Halloween.

Edgy DC wrote: That's the sort of place where I close my magazine and turn out the bedside lamp. I think I'm going to treat much of what I read about the Mets as a ficition piece that takes place in an alternate timeline, because that's all things like this are. It's one of those writing exercises where you take an existing story and continue it, and then pass it on. Like many of the other guys out there, that's all he's doing here. Setting the groundwork from the past to continue a fictional story he's writing about the team's progress going forward.

ALDS: Boson defeats Minnesota, Detroit defeats Oakland ALCS: Boston defeats Oakland NLDS: New York defeats San Diego, Philadelphia defeats Chicago NLCS: New York defeats Philadelphia World Series: The Yankees hoist the trophy for the 28th time Hrrro? Somehow he swapped the Mets and Yankees into opposite leagues. Will Evans make the team as the DH then?

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Have you seen the photos of Utley fielding grounders while sitting in a chair? I'm not at all sure what the point of that was. Last year there were reports of Beltran sitting in a chair tracking pitches, but at least that had a purpose. I missed those Utley pictures though.

I think that that wouldve been patently obvious. With the new management team, and turning the page, it was too obvious of a consideration. But, did that dictate our decision? No. I think I was trying to be too subtle obviously there are things that we cant talk about at a particular moment but I do believe you try to be as straightforward as you can and I dont think that was even close to the borderline. Hmm... "[not] even close to the borderline?" Holy sh*t-- we're getting "Hard Knocks: Flushing" on SNY this season, aren't we? It'd be pretty interesting.

A Boy Named Seo wrote: Good stuff. I liked the Reyes question & answer. Don't agree w/ the commenter that 'seasoned beat writer' Delcos caught Sandy 'unaware' with his decidedly non-softbally question. Seems like Sandy gave a solid, no-bullshit answer, and don't think any of us should be surprised that he admits Reyes is great, but he may not be back for a couple of legit reasons. I've sadly been resigned to 2011 being the Reyes Farewell Tour. Hope I'm dead wrong, though. Good job G & Ceets. I didn't see Bucket on there?? Delcos doesn't really fit in with the group because he's not a fan, but that question was probably one of the MORE softball ones in my opinion, because it's one that's pretty much been discussed a lot and asked a lot already. Actually, both transcripts left out Alderson's parting comments, where he did indicate he thought the questions were fairly 'non-softbally' (I don't remember the word he used)

batmagadanleadoff wrote: Edgy DC wrote: I'll say right out that I really really wish he'd be more circumspect about considering fan animosity when making the decision to release players. Not that I don't understand that it's an even greater challenge for a struggling player to be climbing that emotional hill (and therefore a greater burden for the team), but coming out and explicitly saying so the way he has been only serves to more greatly empower the boobirds. Don't even get me started to rant about this one. That comment was one of the most weasel-y things ever to emanate from the Mets org, and I'm deeply disappointed that, of all people, it spewed from Alderson's mouth I mean, I don't think the fan feelings were much of a factor, but I think the idea of Castillo - Fan Ire < Emaus + rule 5 issues. Add in the depth of Turner and Tejada and Murphy and there just wasn't any compelling reason to keep around a guy that's going to promote negativity. He could've explained it better though. I think in response to Shannon's question he points out how the non-baseball factors really don't play in much.

Edgy DC wrote: That was more in the sense of "We're about to lose some depth due to 40-man roster considerations. Brace for it." I imagine Iggy was just a name he was throwing out there to demonstrate the hard truth that the team was about to lose a feller or two. Fair enough, but also he's been a guy on and off the 40 man already and up here before, so that (provided he's not sucking) would probably factor in versus adding a new guy on. Then again, Iggy's contract status would require him to be demoted through waivers again, where they could option O'Connor if they added him? Ultimately, I think they're 'auditioning' for different roles anyway.

Edgy DC wrote: I'll snicker at Utley when Beltran takes the field. Well, Beltran is doing things that would make Utley cry out in pain if he tried and is actually on a plan and course to be ready. But I agree, besides not drafting him in fantasy leagues, I'll save snickering at Utley for game 4 when Reyes lashes one past Castillo at second.

smg58 wrote: I like him too, but he's not on the 40 and can therefore be demoted, unlike just about everybody else he's competing with. I expect him to be the first guy called up, though. well, as a specialist maybe. Sandy hinted that it'd be Igarashi as the next guy to call on.

Frayed Knot wrote: The word is that they're still aiming for the OD roster. The plan at this point is to get him more ABs plus some OF time in the next few days but, at least for now, to do it in minor league games so if/when he needs to go on the DL it can be back-dated as far as they want and keep alive the option of activating him prior to 15 days into the season. He supposedly did good yesterday, and it's already 10 day and I haven't heard anything zany about him not playing or his knee falling off. He's supposed to play in a minor league game today, but I thought that was this morning. It sounds like they have a plan (imagine that?) and if he does all the steps he'll start OD. If not, DL. Personally, I don't see a scenario that he won't be ready Opening day but WILL be ready 4 days later that it's a big deal to retroactively DL him (i think it's 10 days of Spring that count or whatever right? like Reyes last year.)

Big News! (update: Mets Minority Stake For Sale)
Ceetar replied to seawolf17's topic in New York Mets Talk
Frayed Knot wrote: Part of Jeff Wilpon's explanation for the smaller park is that those 'extra' 5-10,000 seats are always the most expensive ones to build and wind up giving you the least return on the money. I happen to think they under-built the thing too but, as events are turning out, had they gone for a larger one they'd probably be in even deeper debt right now. And some say that teams actually lose money operating the upper decks, when they're not sold out. Electricity and upkeep and vendors and all that. I'd personally wished they'd have made the thing bigger. go 60k. pack the place in. would make those big games all the louder and screamier. of course they opted for a closeness with all the other seats, and if they added 15k they'd be practically in downtown flushing.
