  1. Nice how Rubin, after one start in RF, projects it wouldn't be shocking to see him there Opening Day 2012.
  2. 3-run bomb for Wright? I'm calling it.
  3. drives in Nieuwenhuis, who I'm determined to learn how to spell. too many vowels.
  4. Edgy DC wrote: He fans righty Ian Desmond, but here comes Werth (who has recently confessed to hating the Phillies). Good, I hope he hits .544 against them this year. I'm confused about Werth. He's now an overpaid RF on an afterthought team. Do I still hate him?
  5. Gee's got 2Ks and no runs through 2. Thole and Fernando both with another hit.
  6. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: So, yeah, Pelfrey put the first four on, letting up the aforementioned four runs. Now he's retired nine in a row. David Wright is probably not wildly enthusiastic about it, but he just got his first hit of the spring. 1-for-15, bitches! saving the bullets for the season.

That he stole at least two Cys is yet another reason to begrudge him any happiness. Yeah, that's him. All the writers were clamouring for him to win it that year, so he could have one from each league. There was an unparalleled homoeroticism about it -- I think, if I ever meet Jeff Pearlman, the first question I'm gonna ask him is who he voted for that year. I hope they all remember that when it's time to vote for Johan in 2012 for his NL Cy Young.
  8. Edgy DC wrote: I imagine in this buzzy and linky world, topical humor can be demonstrated to trump funny humor. This morning, thousands and thousands of folks are talking about Manhattan Mini Storage. Give me actual funniness, but, well, three million freaks are subscribing to Charlie Sheen's tweets. yeah, that's their thing. (I don't follow them, i just mentioned the company in my tweet and they noticed) I like their ads, they're sorta funny. different at least. controversial for sure. usually more political "People are openly gay and secretly republican, why leave?" or "storing at your parents means having to visit"

(He actually had better numbers in every category except Wins vis--vis said cheat) He was still walking batters like they were his well-cared-for pets-- 3.7 BB/9 (a career-best; 2008's second-best, and no full-year/lengthy-partial-year performance comes close). That's manageable, not great. They just didn't hit him at all, mostly because he struck out guys at rates comparable to prime-years Pedro. Are you referring to that a-hole who raped a teen Mindy McCready? That he stole at least two Cys is yet another reason to begrudge him any happiness. When Ollie is ..well, whatever he is.. guys just don't hit him. Walks and Ks like crazy. He's a guy you probably could reach the 6th inning of a game without realizing he's throwing a no-hitter. When we resigned him, he was either first or second (behind Santana) in strikeouts since 2004.
  10. I tweeted this yesterday and today I get a reply from @manhattanmini: "But is it funny? Even a teeny bit?"

LUCIE, Fla. After two weeks of exhibition games, it appears that the 35-year-old Luis Castillo, in the final season of his often-belittled four-year, $24 million contract, has the early lead for the Mets second-base job. He is in front somewhat by default, having nosed ahead of a modest group of players who have not stood out in any particular way this spring training. I think there are reports out there for Emaus and for Murphy too as being 'leading'.
  12. The Second Spitter wrote: His 2010 stats are very comparable to his last season-and-a-half in Pittsburgh. I wonder if Warthen has given up trying to teach him. It has been remarked to me by people who have observed his mannerisms on TV that he suffers from ADD (and I'm dead serious). Give him some amphetamines then. win-win right? That wouldn't surprise me though. Would almost make you feel bad for the guy. Yelling at him for issuing a 4-pitch walk would be like yelling at the 10 year old kid who can't sit still in English class. I think he'll resurface at one point with another team and have a bout of success though, just not here.
  13. Matt den Dekker was listening to Wiz Khalifa radio on #pandora on the bus ride, if you were curious.
  14. bmfc1 wrote: The game in Viera is delayed until at least two. Perhaps a long bus ride for nothing. The Mets might lose one of the few teams with them on the east coast of Florida: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/baseball-insider/2011/03/orioles_move_west_could_provid.html They all gotta go. West coast or bust. It's unfortunate, but it's also stupid to play the Marlins 9 times and 3 of those just before playing them in the regular season.
  15. It's usual for early in the Spring. You've got more guys in camp and this allows you to get more ABs. Plus starters are often pulled after 2-3 innings and don't always get an AB (and why bother with pinch hitting there or having a reliever bat?)
  16. Not cool Manhattan Mini Storage. http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/09/company-jabs-mets-fans-on-the-subway/
  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I've been wondering about that one too. His perspective might be different this year. Pitching regularly in the Buffalo starting rotation might be his final last shot at reviving his career. And it'll be presented differently than last year too. But they should present it now. No reason to let his arm strength wane to reliever level first. He obviously wants to be a starter, tell them this is the only way. Accentuate what he's doing well, what he needs to work on, and have him pitch to minor leaguers on back fields away from the reporters so we don't have to have constant updates. If someone notices (Alderson, another GM, Ronnie Paulino..) in May he's 5-0 and striking guys out, great. If not, he can quietly disappear into the '06 highlight reel.
  18. Edgy DC wrote: Many rivers to cross before we get there. indeed, chances everyone remembers to caulk the tires and float over safely without blowing out an elbow? The bullpen doesn't look like it'll be bad though, unlike what people think. It wasn't really bad last year either, despite what people think/thought. Pelfrey and Dickey can often go deeper, but a strong bullpen masks some of the depth issues in the starting pitching, much like it did in 2006.
  19. Edgy DC wrote: Gameday says so. Nine pitches, nine strikes, zero balls. Gameday is stupid. It's not tracking balls and strikes in spring. Every BB is a 4 ball walk, every K is a 3 strike one, and every out is on the first pitch. but we'll go with it. Long Live Acosta.
  20. Edgy DC wrote: Hi, I'm Manny Acosta. I just closed out that game by striking out the side in the ninth. On nine pitches. Love me. Seven-two is your final. was it really nine pitches?
  21. Two outs and a runner on third. Can Kirk Nieuwenhuis come through? Two. Run. Homer. As the houston announcer said: "That's a scrabble name"
  22. btw, Castillo 1/1 with 2 walks today.
  23. Edgy DC wrote: The Young Line: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 S0, 2 HR. So is that what we're rooting for? Stay away from walks and use the park which will hopefully hold the ball better than this one? Well, it's spring. but yeah, no BBs is a start. I think there were a couple deep fly outs too, so perhaps he just was a little flat with his pitches today. That's a Quality Start right there though, which is usually about what you want outta 4 and 5 in the rotation. Thole thrown out stealing. stealing? stealing. announcers: "Was that a hit and run? Hu didn't swing." "You mean the SS, Chin Lung Hu didn't swing." and then an aside about Abbot and Castello.
  24. TransMonk wrote: I believe this game will be re-aired on the MLB network later tonight. yah! I don't get to watch a lot of these. listening to the Astros audio feed again.
