  1. the roster size is also related to the pitcher use fwiw. Too many pitching changes when you have 35 guys. Most teams are carrying a 8th, 9th, 10th reliever rotated to AAA regularly anyway though, and when you call them up they're going to use them. It's still going to be slow in September with these things. We'll see how managers use the relievers with the 3 PA thing. I'm interested, but there's a good chance few will really try to game it the way i suggested. I don't know if this pushes the needle, but you will find a lot of managers bringing guys in to issue IBB since that'll help their numbers. just good math? Unless you're the Astros, who don't do that anymore. Also the damn replay thing. I mean come on. These challenges are literally what lead to the sign stealing thing. And now they're worried it's taking too long. I love replay existing, i think it's important and good to get things right, but the challenge idea is dumb and just get it right. Different rant. But why not put in a 5 second delay to these feeds? Hell 3 may do it. "Here's a live feed of the catcher's signs!", "Hey guys, stop using the live feed to get the opposing teams signs! stop it!" "Man, I can't believe the Astros managed to get the signs."
  2. other numbers "leaked" during the initial story about the sale said 60 million over 2 years I think. It's all made up bs though. Add up all the expenses on one side for everything, count them strictly against gate sales or something. Ignore money from MLB, from naming rights, from parking. different 'entities'. I mean, it's the same math that always tripped of Megdal back with the Madoff/frozen assets stuff. The Mets ,and the aggregate media, were repeating exaggerated numbers to cry poor (Especially they were trying to mitigate responsibility by playing the victim too) The franchise value grows by millions every week. Hell, just the PECOTA predictions may already bump them up. 75% of a playoff berth and that windfall? that's valuable. It's all nonsense. All of it. we know less than we even think we do. I'm sure there's some gray area to the "family wants to sell" bits too. It doesn't matter who's running the Mets or how poorly. Very few things gain value like this. The Mets make a playoff run this year they probably get another 50 million each, easy, in a sale. Who's in a hurry to get out from under that? Losing money. That the media repeats this claim with no fact checking is ridiculous.
  3. when I checked when they announced this rule last offseason it was like..4 IP that would qualify. I hate all these rules with a passion. I'm not super concerned with length, but the 3 batter minimum is going to make games longer. I hate designating players as anything other than players. I hope some Belichek like manager spends a dead September getting a reliever 20 games started at LF just so he doesn't count as a pitcher the next season. Extra player on the roster is fine, I guess I don't hate that. that's fine. I'm fine with the limited sept rosters too. the expanded options/DL time for pitchers annoys me. Let guys cycle pitchers as they need, whatever. I get it though, they're trying to eliminate LOOGYs which is why the 'pitcher/hitter' designation, it's so they can limit pitchers on the roster but they didn't exactly pare down enough to the point that teams are forced to pitch guys longer than they would otherwise, so it doesn't do anything.

  5. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Not speaking for Ceets but my guess is he sees a conspiracy whereby Beltran is being set-up as a fall guy. That he was caught in a lie about his culpability--and the report and now these comments support that he was lying--doesn't matter in that case. A little yes, but he IS being set up as a fall guy. I'm not saying he wasn't involved (I personally don't care though), but to paint him as some godfather evil overlord lambasting the little Astros (fucking Brian McCann. Consider the source here. Fucking Brian McCann. Who was with Beltran the year before happily cheating, who btw was with the Astros in 2018 as well. Technically they didn't 'bang' in 2018, does that mean they didn't relay signals? The MLB report says they were still relying signs. ) And please, the media runs you down NOW to talk about the 2017 Astros and you're not going to plead "oh, it was the other guys really!"? Of course you're going to deny it. Beltran again, is the only player being punished. A. MLB knew. Everyone knew. There are a zillion simple and easy things both opposing teams and MLB could've done to prevent this. They didn't. And then when it all hits the fan it's a player, employed elsewhere, that is damaged? B. 'I'm not aware of the camera' is clearly nonsense, but also not really the point. He wasn't being forthright, but why would he incriminate himself either? Also the WSJ report says it was front office guys that had decoded the signs using the game feed (this is legal, you're just now allowed to do it during the game) and support personal that was in the replay room. So Beltran wasn't really looking at the cameras anyway. C. MLB approved the Astros moving the monitor closer to the dugout, despite knowing they were stealing signs. D. There have been dozens of reports of other teams doing this, of lots of teams doing this, etc etc. MLB doesn't seem particularly interesting in chasing them down. It seems like it wants to pretend this is resolved, so Beltran gets lumped in with Hinch and Cora as the guys punished, and everyone else is just "whoops, okay, cover our tracks better" It's like the early 2000s where everyone's like "Oh, maybe I shouldn't send the steroids directly to the clubhouse with my name on it" E. It barely did anything. A lot of the research is suggesting that maybe there was an edge, but it was negated by NOT knowing other times. i.e. if the system fails the drawbacks are a lot worse than the gains you got for knowing. So we're talking about something that happened 3 years ago that maybe didn't even help that much, but Beltran is some evil overlord for it? F. to tie back to B. The media has been very clear that they were annoyed Beltran didn't dish the dirt in his press conference accepting the job, and this Post article is just another example of referencing that. A few reporters even said "oh, if he'd been as candid in his resignation PC as he was in his acceptance PC, he probably could've stayed." Literally said that. And this post article hits all the talking points without really understanding them. while fact checking some dates I saw this SI article from Verducci, who I generally find highly questionable at least as advanced understanding of the game goes, but this one seems at least well reasoned and thought out. (https://www.si.com/mlb/2020/01/13/houston-astros-cheating-punishmenthttps://www.si.com/mlb/2020/01/13/houston-astros-cheating-punishment) He mentions an interesting catch-22 type thing. What if you go to the clubhouse to review game footage of your most recent PA, as many batters do, and you catch the catcher's signs while you do it? Then later on, you're on second base, pick up what the sign is? That's against the rules because you used the camera DURING the game. Are you just supposed to sit on that? sure.
  6. It's a garbage smear job anyway, but that post article is absolute trash. Just pure ignorant unadulterated garbage. You can tell the writer doesn't even understand the situation or key parts of it, and does reiterate the part about how Beltran 'lied' to the Post when he got hired. Which of course, is why he got fired. For not giving them the scoop. just pure trash.
  7. =smg58 post_id=31541 time=1581469076 user_id=62] This. I do give him credit for his handling of the sign-stealing.
  8. come on. You can't have Oliver and Stewart on there without Colbert.
  9. I imagine interest is 'scant' now but if you give some guys times to put together a group to buy, it might pick up. Or maybe not. Either way you might worry that a buyer spending that much would end up like Einhorn (or Jeter's group) and be basically tapped out. Especially if the Wilpons sell in a way that still has them syphoning off the SNY money. It might be 10 years before the owners and re-capitalize on that.
  10. https://www.baseballprospectus.com/static/images/nl_east.svg> Washington has a few potentials above the Moves, but they've got a lot more going on down the backslope. Worth noting that the Braves have been underprojected for a few years now, but it's also possible that the projections have now accounted for that. Phillies clearly not very good, but they have lots of volatility and some out there 'if everything goes right' projections. Miami is a city in Florida. They have some guys with baseball uniforms too.

  12. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=31466 time=1581431878 user_id=68] Two first place finishes in 31 seasons and you think the Mets will be picking? That's even funnier than this moronic proposed format. They'll be pickees, not pickers, and that'll be thanks to the ridiculosity of MLB in now having eleventy three playoff teams. Expanding playoffs that are a total, total crap shoot in the first place. Oh, my!
  13. Not only a reality show Sunday night, but you get all sorts of analysis shows leading up to it debating about WHO should they pick? WFAN will be nonstop "should the Mets pick the Cubs or the Nationals" all day Friday, all weekend (because they'll clinch second best record Thursday night) And then MOnday, a presumed offday will have the added matchup discussion with the added "See, this is why I would've picked the Cubs not the Nationals" second guessing. A lot of this happening on the network that just so happened to have just given MLB a ton of money for broadcasting rights. Nobody should be framing this as anything but "MLB figuring out ways to make a ton more money for owners"

Edgy MD wrote: I haven't followed this closely, but if this transfer was supposed to be taking place in stages over time, am I correct in assuming that Cohen was intending to finance the team rather than paying out of pocket? it was going to be 5 payments over 5 years the last 'leak' said. I'm sure there were discussions towards how best to make those payments in order to pay the least amount of taxes though.
  15. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Risks making the reg season a little too meaningless as I believe the '19 Mets make the playoffs (and are the choice of the best team required to make a choice) under this expansion format. no one's voluntarily playing the 2019 Mets if they can pick the Diamondbacks or Brewers. The Diamondbacks are throwing like, an injured Greinke and then Merrill Kelly and Robbie Ray at you. Brewers got Brandon Woodruff and like..Zach Davies? yeah. but MLB is due to sell a broadcast agreement starting in 2022, so..

  17. Maybe the rumors about Cohen not getting approved were true. Maybe the years of control were a workaround of sorts, once you own 80% of a team, you figure they can't say no?, but he did in fact get a 'no' or a "we'll see" to that? Or maybe there really was a 'right to purchase' option in the minority shares and it was all a ploy to open it up and get a higher value. A franchise value, as much of that is basically a made up finance term, of 3.5 billion seems absurd, but it almost happened. I'd be surprised if it didn't end up going for more than that now though, not that they've "set a value". Curious if they're still sell 72%.

  19. Much like the blogs back in the day that didn't take their cues from what they read in newspapers (publishing series previews as if you couldn't figure out the Mets were playing the Cardinals tonight), the Mets podcasts I find most palatable are the ones that aren't under the impression that they have to be latter-day Mike and/or the Mad Dog. I've been America's Guest on many of them. I'm happy to be asked and go where the hosts want, but I've never understand the point of "let's talk about shortstop depth" for the umpteenth time. yeah, a lot of the internet is just aggregated nonsense at this point. One guy says something, 456 repeat it and maybe another 100 attempt to repeat it in their own words. Not that this is different with podcasts than say, Joe Buck saying something and every ESPN/talk show weighing in, but still. Props to Amazin' Avenue's A Pod Of Their Own for that, mostly having a different take/angle/discussion. My 'idea' would be more of a Barley Prose podcast where we talk beer and pair it with baseball. "This Triple IPA is huge, hoppy, and in your face. It really packs a wallop, much like Yoenis Cespedes' 3 HR game last night!"
  20. I "know" what I'm doing, were someone wanting to do a CPF Mets podcast, clearly from Steve's list there's a dearth. You can scratch off 'we gotta believe' from that list though, since that's Barstool and hence hateful misogynistic garbage.
  21. It's a fair and appropriate question. Let's see if anyone else is a non-pod before judging me. And btw, you're often one of the crankiest here, so if you're calling me a crank I'm humbly flattered. It's litearlly a thread about podcasts with replies suggesting podcasts! I only respond to only 1/50 nonsense music posts with "I don't listen to music" And those are only usually because someone labeled them absurdly and I didn't realize.
  22. effectively wild, it's league-wide but it's good. THe alumni ones seem fun, I haven't gotten there. A Pod Of Their Own from Amazin' Avenue is sometimes pretty good. I'm not a fan of most of the other Mets ones. =kcmets post_id=31315 time=1581267849 user_id=53] Just wondering, am I the only one who can't remember the last time they listened to a podcast (and I'm not entirely sure I ever listened to one)?
  23. I tend to give all the newbies a chance but I unfollowed her late last year. Wasn't adding anything for me, and just contributing to the re-writting Mets tweets beat that a lot of these writers are on.
  24. Did they take her off SNB? I assumed this was the concession to keep that.
  25. The whole arrangement was stupid. Either you work for ESPN, or work for the Mets. How could anyone think it's ok to work for a ballclub, and a member of the media intended to cover that ballclub. 'cover that ballclub' is pretty generous for what ESPN does, particularly the SNB. This stuff is pretty common these days. Sounds like someone might have balked based on her comments about Beltran/Astros though. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Typical of the dumbass things Chief Brody has overseen so far. Hire a celebrity assistant GM for the oxygen it gives you, pretend the conflicts of interest don't matter, then part ways with a nice note as soon as they do. What contributions do you think she made? Not that I doubt she had something to offer Do any of these folk add anything? At best I think it's just another "voice in the room" and maybe connections. "Hey Jessica, do you know so and so? Let's talk with them.."
