They would need to add another starter before he would be expendable. If the Mets make the right bullpen upgrades, they could live with a rotation of Santana, Dickey, Niese, Pelfrey, and Gee. You could actually make the case that he's the exact same pitcher he's always been and has shown little growth or regression. And that it's pretty reasonable to expect somewhere between 2010 and 2011 in terms of numbers. The only thing that's really gotten worse is his GB% which is dropped each year. His FB/HR rate is up this year, which may or may not be correlated to the GB% (his GB% wasn't graet last year either, and he didn't give up many home runs) You could certainly make the case that if he could work on the sinker more, throw it more, get mroe GB, that you'd reasonably expect less HRs and less damaging numbers.
  2. So I guess this is gonna go down like the 2000 Yankees September rather than the 2007 Mets for the Red Sox.
  3. Edgy DC wrote: Willie Kaboom Harris. Send your five defensive replacements after that ball, Tony. futile of course. maybe he shouldn't have made that catch and we all could've gone to bed early.
  4. nevermind roughly zero. Maybe the closer to the end of this season they settle with him, the closer it was to zero? or could just bet on whether he's tendered on a contract, and leave out my confidence in it.
  5. I think he'll be resigned. I'd probably do the same, depending. I'd definitely consider trading for another starting pitcher this offseason, with some of the extraneous 'decent' parts the Mets have. If you could pull in something decent that way, I'd look to swap Pelfrey for a nice prospect or something. Provided Santana is on scheduled for opening day anyway.

  7. Oh Beato.. paving the way for a spot in the minors next year..?
  8. Edgy DC wrote: I-Go-Schwinden-in-Water makes it through six, which I wouldn't have bet on early. He owes Harris some chocolates. Of course, Duda and Paulino owe Schwinden some chocolates.

  10. Edgy DC wrote: I hope somebody knows the Heimlich, because the Sawx are choking again tonight. So are the Rays though. At least the Sox are already sitting in the chair they want.. or something.

  12. lots of unearneds in this one.
  13. batmagadanleadoff wrote: What a hypocrite this Bobby Ojeda is. As of 40 seconds ago and on the heels of the latest Alderson clip on the CF walls, he's now suddenly all for bringing in the CF walls. The team needs HR's to win and Mets are disheartened from the get go at Spring Training when their bombs three hop the Florida OF walls that are as far as away as Citi's, sez Ojeda. You shoulda heard what he was saying up until 40 seconds ago. OF dimensions don't matter, he' say, while rewinding an Ike Davis 440 foot bomb for his Exhibit A. Ojeda's worthless.
  14. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: I don't think they let Pelfrey walk, either. But if Santana's back by the spring, resigning Capuano and letting Pelf walk leaves the Mets with a relatively-inexpensive starting five of Johan, the Duke, the Dickey, Niese, and Gee/Schwinden. I don't think Cap will be inexpensive. And I think he'll be looking for a two(plus) year deal. Don't know if he'll get it, but I think he's shown himself healthy and able. I wouldn't mind keeping him though, but ultimately I think I'm hoping Sandy trades for a fairly above average starter. I think he's got some pieces that need to be traded, roster space wise, and he hinted at that yesterday. What do they need more than pitching?
  15. Benjamin Grimm wrote: They have until next April to come up with other options. Schwinden's not the only possibility. Sometimes teams get players from outside their organization. It's been known to happen. and I'm sure they can include Pelfrey in that subset of guys they trade if they get suitable upgrades. But they need pitchers, so I doubt just letting value walk out of the door is part of that plan. Same reason they didn't just release K-Rod when he got to 54.
  16. they don't have any other options. The closest we got is Schwinden, and I doubt Alderson's seen enough out of him to expect he'll provide the value and innings that that 5million provides.
  17. Pelfrey will be starting next year. Sure, maybe it's not for the Mets, but he'll be starting. Why would the Mets just let another team have him?
  18. There is roughly zero chance Pelfrey is non-tendered anyway. same with Pagan.
  19. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Of course he can do it, the point is that it's not at all a sure thing. Ceetar used the word "safe". well yeah.. metirish wrote: Yes of course, wasn't implying that it was a sure thing. I mean , the Mets could win the WS next year, just don't bet on it. a 'safe bet' is what I meant. I'd say the odds are in favor of it happening. but then, I'm going to bet on the Mets to win the World Series too. But my logic there is a $5 investment pays for my Jose Reyes WS Jersey.
  20. 11-11, 4.4 ERA only 157.1 IP. The injury may have dragged down his numbers at the end before he was shut down. His periferials actually improved though, despite the worse ERA. K/9 from 7.7 to 7.9 BB/9 from 3.2 to 2.5 .
  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Yeah, 176 hits in a season is by no means a sure thing. well, i'm not going to start projecting injuries on him. If he starts 150 games next year, it's a pretty safe bet he'll get 176 hits in 158ish games.
  22. Edgy DC wrote: Ceetar wrote: Wright's strikeouts are actually back down to his normalish levels since the DL stint. That's sort of beside the point. I was addressing the notion in the abstract and not necessarily asserting it as such. I was agreeing with you, specifically citing evidence that it's probably not the walls causing Wright's spike in Ks. Abstractly, I agree with you. I do find it interesting that the Mets seemingly had a home field advantage the last two years and not so much this year. Collins and Hudgens seem much more stable and able to instill a better approach, but it hasn't neccesarily manifested. I wonder if 2010's much more free swinging, much less work a count attitude let to more balls in play, and more runs as a result. walks, strikeouts, XBH, AVG, OPS, even BABIP and SB are much the same home and away, yet they've scored more runs away and have more singles. Could just be a quirk of luck. I don't see fielding splits. more GIDP at home, maybe more errors as well?
  23. Wright's strikeouts are actually back down to his normalish levels since the DL stint. The changes won't make Bay better, or give the Mets a better chance to win. It'll just redesign the box score. Which is fine too.
  24. Ashie62 wrote: The grass is not greener on the other side? Grass around the apple used to be green, but they had to paint it black. so no. not greener.
  25. Frayed Knot wrote: I'd be more in favor of a couple extra to start the year before reducing it week by week as was suggested and then fewer add-ons in Sept. I also like the idea of dangling this 'extra-jobs' carrot as an exchange for giving up the DH but I know that's just a fantasy. That'd be perfect, but the biggest concern I have with that discussion is that I'd worry the debate would push back the agreement of the CBA and could prompt a strike/lockout.
