  1. Bay sitting cause of a sore shoulder, something that seems to have been bothering him for a good portion of this season.
  2. you're not employed by them. Jeter's an idiot and probably a cheater. But I'm not sure how/why he fits into this conversation.
  3. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Wright's comments in the Snooze today brought a tear to my eye. Asked if they considered wearing them without an OK he said "of course not. MLB lays out the guidelines and it's up to us to follow them." Good question-asking above Fyrhie That's the only answer, and the correct one. Regardless of what you think he should've done, _Wright_ can't be actively talking about disobeying MLB.
  4. Mets players will pay tribute to New York Citys uniformed service men and women by wearing caps representing their organizations following the tradition started by the 2001 team. from the press release. vague, but it certainly sounds like they meant during the game. Perhaps this is where MLB "Got wind" of what the Mets intended. What happened from there however.. The Mets probably wouldn't have suddenly changed their minds on this without pressure from MLB, in whatever form it took. Maybe it wasn't a fine. Maybe it was something else. Maybe they threatened taking away the All-Star Game, etc. Maybe they simply waited until the last moment to remind the Mets "Hey no, you can't do this" giving them no time to formulate a good reply/compromise?

  6. Those quotes make it seem like Joe has no idea what's going on, and was just thrown in there last minute to be the 'face' of it. The memo was supposedly sent out before the season, with some sort of followup more recently once they got wind of the Mets supposed plans. Of course, you'd think someone would've come up with this memo by now too.. These types of things are usually posted in the clubhouses all year I think, alongside the memo not to fraternize with opposing players.
  7. Even this guy gets it: He didn't wear the hat during the match. How is what he did different than the Mets wearing it pre-game?
  8. Okay, I'm going. t-shirt and what not. Star Wars. Use the Force.. "Hmm. Control, control. You must learn control." ?Yoda to Parnell

Weren't the Mets fairly unique with the pink backpack? I know it's been co-opted by most of baseball, specifically the Phillies, lately but were all teams doing it for as long as the Mets?

  11. bmfc1 wrote: Wright needs a day off and I really want to see Val P. in the lineup for once. Perhaps he'll take a pitch. The Mets were really good at taking pitches and working counts for most of the season..what happened to that? Is it just the playing out the stringness of it all?

"@AdamRubinESPN: And my friends at MLB were adamant no one threatened heavy fines." Pressure sure seems to have been asserted somehow. Rubin's got to stop leaking this piece by piece and put together a full, in-depth story. Rubin's tweets today are pretty nasty allaround. I wish people would stop retweeting him so I don't have to read them. if I am retweeting them and it's bothering you by all means stop following me please. it's not you. or at least, not regularly. It's one thing if you want to comment on something they say, but some people out there just retweet the beat guys blindly. It's not like they're secret accounts, if I wanted to hear what they had to say I'd already be following them. Although it does affirm my thoughts that I can get all the info that's important from Rubin without having to deal with as much of his negative spin.

Many other teams have made a "It Gets Better" video which specifically mentions LGBT youth. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTYc0C1VpC0 Where is the Mets "It Gets Better" video? I'm sure after last night someone can make some "inclusive" jokes about this. But bottom line is that it's hardly only gay youths getting bullied, and I wouldn't be surprised if the younger folk are rather more accepting of it than say their teachers. (At least no more than kids get bullied for ridiculous things like the wrong pair of shoes or a weird haircut)

  17. Frayed Knot wrote: "But why?" -- Because the purpose of a schedule should be to be as fair as equitable as possible so each team has a close to even shot at competing. It shouldn't be to play-up quirky or temporary rivalries, attendance up-ticks, celebrate round number anniversaries, or grab-bag type randomness. But that's never the case due to many factors from luck and injury to trades and rookie promotions. And has gotten less so over the years. So why not play up the entertainment factor where you can?
  18. Frayed Knot wrote: OK, so it may not the THE dumbest idea floating out there ... but it's certainly in the class picture. well, in here, not out there. But why? Everyone seems to have a different opinion on how the schedule 'should be'. I personally don't value the so-called unbalanced schedule, which is where this starts. Maybe a third party decides? Notices that the Mets and Cubs have an uptick in attendence against each other and grants them an extra series. Or predicts the Brewers and Giants had some beaning and bad blood, so plays up the hatred? Or, in a world where we're considering interleague everyday, plays up the '92/'82/'02 WS matchups from 10/20/30 years ago and gives the Blue Jays and Braves a series, and the Giants and Angels, and the..Brewers and Cardinals..well, maybe not that one.

Not baseball stories, but nice given the theme. But that 8 year old girl who loves Derek Jeter story and got to meet him? Barf. Oh, also how they frequently played their inbetween inning montages over the start of the next inning instead of daring to lose a commercial spot.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: I think it'd be cool if teams could request series. Have 4-5 wild series in the schedule, this way if say the Mets and Cubs wanted to play another set of games, they could request it. I'll take 'Ideas that have no shot in hell' for $400 Alex. Hey, it's not less crazy than some of the zany ideas that have bee talked about to death because someone in baseball leaked that it was mentioned at a meeting. There was something weird about requesting divisions based on last year's record or something right?
  21. Maybe the Mets, instead of fighting with their commissioner and creditor, should work with them to get permission to wear the hats next year, and/or into perpetuity. Or does no one care because it 's not an nice round anniversary?
  22. Edgy DC wrote: Perception, because the Mets did a lot of wonderful things yesterday, and they wore the caps in the pregame ceremonies and then chose to abide by the boss's policy. Choosing to focus on the one thing that 'went wrong' is unfair to them, and all that other stuff. Says the guy who didn't want them to wear the caps anyhow. I also didn't want them to wear the hats they did, (I think it's the same part of the 'slippery slope' argument they used to deny the Mets the FDNY hats.) or move the game to 8:00 so that ESPN could run a 9/11 story with a baseball backdrop.
  23. HahnSolo wrote: And the Mets would have looked great, both on the field and in perception. Instead they look feeble, which for this organization is all too common. Choosing to focus on the one thing that 'went wrong' is unfair to them, and all that other stuff. I can't help but wonder what would've happened if the Mets (or New Era) had decided in March they wanted different caps than the ones planned, back when they originally got the note that they wouldn't be allowed to wear something different and petitioned for it.
  24. how dare you call Reyes out on strikes?
