Well, the Yanx draw more than their share of walks and hit plenty of HRs with runners on (they have 6 Grand Slams, for instance, despite only 17 total hits with the bases loaded). Basically what they've got is a lineup full of guys who are at the stage of their careers where they are now strictly HR swingers. It works despite the lower BAs they're accepting (esp ARod. Martin, Andruw) because everybody in the lineup plus several of the bench players all do the same thing so they know someone will eventually come through even if it takes two strike-outs in the interim. I mean look at freakin' Ibanez; the guy's 40 years old, is hitting .240, but has nearly 50% of his hits go for extra bases. Their runs scored as a result of HRs pct is up over 52% at this point. It's like dealing with a line-up full of idiot savants. sure, they do draw walks, but when they don't they lose. It's no surprise they were only okay in the cold weather and once summer got here they got hot as hell (And oh look, Oakland ain't hot?) with the ball carrying more in the summer. With the weather cooling off in Sept/Oct and their old fogies wearing down after a whole season...struggles on the horizon?
  3. We're now using starters 6,7,8 and that's rough. Turns out Reed Johnson DID hurt Santana when he jumped on his ankle. bleh!
  4. Swan Swan H wrote: Jeremy Hefner will be added before the game according to a tweet from the Mets official account. No word yet on who gets the gate. Johan Santana. Justin Turner/Valdespin whoever it was gonna be gets a reprieve until Wednesday, the only Nats game I'm not going to.
  5. My take on the Yankees is that they have a lot of "swing as hard as you can" guys that are perfect for their park (like Ike's go-ahead HR last night would've been out there) but usually works fine in other parks too. (Except Jeter who is mostly a squib single because the ball takes weird bounces and for some inexplicable reason infielders don't play in. Probably because he's also really good at flicking the pitches into short outfield. They probably should pinch in at the corners. anyway.) And since the entire lineup is full of them and there is no pitcher because they play by kiddie rules, the odds are in their favor that they'll get that one big damaging blow they need. This is why they lose when they don't hit home runs, or only hit one-run home runs because the opposition doesn't walk anyone.

Well, that will happen again on August 12 as ESPN has moved the home game against the Braves to 8:05. At least the Mets have a day off the next day. Nope, I have a DVR.
  7. The Second Spitter wrote: The task of simultaneously pleasing casual viewers and hardcore Trekkies became impossible to reconcile. difficult? yes. impossible? no. It would certainly take some work, but you could pick a random spiderman story arc and introduce the backstory involved as well, on some basis. You might need to streamline, sure, but you don't need to do the spider bit me! wow! look! i can lift heavy things and hold onto walls! bit every time. And with a little bit of forethought you can introduce some of the backstory in previous movies. (Say you're signing up for 3-4 movies in advance or whatever) The same with Batman. I'm not suggesting they respect the current universe, but the entire Batman universe. You don't have to pretend it's the same storyline, but we don't need to go back to Batman Begins origin stories either. You could start the next movie mid-batmobile chase of the Riddler with Robin on the other end of the phone directing him and no one would really be lost in what's going on. The next Superman movie doesn't need an hour on Krypton, and growing up in Smallville (unless it's a Smallville type movie) You can start with him already knowing Lois Lane and working at the Planet. I want to see less re-development of characters and more ambitious storylines is all. Just go the the Dr Who/James Bond route the story isn't anchored to one actor. Bond received a reboot in 2006. The previous Bond franchise had the same small group of people at the helm for most of its existence. It was literally inherited. The same producers maintained creative control over the Bond character, irrespective of directors and actors. When their influence waned and ideas dried up, it received a reboot. Dr Who is not a film franchise. It was also partially rebooted in 2005 Right, but that's my point with Bond. Sure, Batman doesn't have a small people at the helm, but I'm trying to say to respect some sort of 'creative commons' world where everyone knows who Batman, Superman, etc. Do we really need another individuals interpretation of what those characters are? Wasn't some of the critique of Spider-Man in the other thread (I haven't seen it yet) that Peter Parker wasn't a nerdy enough social-misfit? Dr. Who obviously is different but it's fresh in my mind. Plus one season isn't that much longer in run time than a 3-4 movie arc. But they manage to pick a new Doctor and/or a companion and just go with it. People complain, sure, but they still do doctor and companion stuff and they get over it and keep watching. I'm curious how the new Bourne movie is going to be.
  8. Yanks lose, after their "swing as hard as we can in case we hit it" offense nets two to tie. walk-off loss.
  9. Zvon wrote: Well, pen did good. We can take that from this. And I'm finally sold on Valdespin. Thought of him as trade bait. Keep the man who is the man. 4/22 as a pinch hitter, like a .305 OBP still. not good. small sample size, ride the fun while it lasts. pen pitched to a 1.5 ERA today, theirs sucked (And we outpitched the Nats pen too, which is continuing to suck..) but it was that one extra run that they squeaked in off Ramirez despite what looked like a bad call on the SB? for Ramirez's first earned run in a long time that cost them the game. *sigh* that sucked. and it took freaking forever, was raining half the time and BLAH.
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: Well there essentially are no scheduled DHs in the traditional meaning where you're scheduling them prior to the start of the season. I suspect that whole two-day window thing was put in as a fail-safe to keep the home team, which controls the fate of a game up until first pitch, from calling off a game prematurely so as to take advantage of the new call-up rule within the same scheduled series because they took a look at how the pitching lined up for the two teams and thought it might be to their advantage. not this year, no. It's probably going to be used most of the time to call up that spot starter you needed without juggling.
  11. Swan Swan H wrote: You're right that it wouldn't apply for this weekend, but it isn't limited to scheduled doubleheaders. From mlb.com In a rule established in the most recent collective bargaining agreement, clubs can have 26 players on the roster for day-night doubleheaders that occur at least two days after the original game is rained out. well that's scheduled right? just..later. I thought there was some days in advance it had to be on the schedule for, I just couldn't find it in the CBA when I googled. There's a lot of murky rules about timing and travel and exemptions for the Red Sox and Cubs and what not.
  12. It was 'reported' that Mets-Yankees could be home and home 2-2 series, but that's not entirely true. It can either be 2-2, or just 3. Unless the Mets are playing the AL East that year, and then it can be 3-3. (1) There will be no more than 20 Interleague games. The bulk of Interleague play will be based on a rotating division format, but may include no more than one series against a prime inter-league rival unless they play two two-game series. In the years when the corresponding divisions are scheduled for Interleague play, two series of three or fewer games against the prime inter-league rival may be played.
  13. Swan Swan H wrote: It looks like the rain will probably not cause a postponement, but if it did they would almost certainly play two tomorrow or Sunday. This year, a team can call up a 26th player for a doubleheader. If they had to play two in one day this weekend, who gets the call? I believe that only applies to scheduled doubleheaders.
  14. He did good. Exchanged for future considerations, which Rubin says could mean this:
  15. hey, former Phillies traded for each other!
  16. metirish wrote: All those pretends are for you Ceetar......please play along I hate pretend. but fine, I trade Davis because my hitting consultants, Keith Hernandez, Ralph Kiner, and my father, like Duda's swing better.
  17. A bunch of people just released the Hall of Nearly Great e-book. http://www.hallofnearlygreat.com/ Ted Berg writes about John Olerud. Also features Frank Viola, Keith Hernandez, Moises Alou, David Cone, and Robin Ventura.
  18. Sherman, today: They have duplicity with, say, a lefty-hitting second baseman. But the industry knows the Mets have had multiple disciplinary problems with Jordany Valdespin and that arbitration eligible Daniel Murphy is about to get expensive for a defensively deficient player without power. With Matt Den Dekker coming, the Mets should definitely make available fellow lefty-hitting outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis (viewed as a fourth outfielder in the industry) and maybe even Lucas Duda. Dudas real position, first base, is blocked by Ike Davis. http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/mets/no_bull_MKZdLSwtlJrPwemAOgrXWL#ixzz21Ai5iYSF Why "disciplinary problems" is he talking about with Jordany? I know he's a hot head and there are temperament issues, but the phrase he uses typically goes with NFL or college players and guns, drugs, or domestic violence. Am I unaware of some issue(s) or is Sherman overstating things? It's the temperament thing. I've heard this said, a lot,(going back to before 2011 Spring Training) but I've never heard of specific incidents. He's always seen fine to me.
  19. bmfc1 wrote: Did I hear Terry correctly on the post-game: the Nationals are a good bunting team so they tailor their IF so that bunts stay fair. If he thinks that, and I wouldn't put it past Davey and management that went out of its way to get the 1st round pick two years in a row, then did the Mets bunt at all? Is that why Torres had a few IF hits? No one ever talks about this stuff. Torres is probably the only one (well, Valdy) with the real speed to make bunting a thing though. The Mets should (they might for all I know) let the infield grass grow a little longer so it slows down the ball and gives guys that extra split second to make plays defensively.
  20. Edgy DC wrote: I'm most committed to an initial J and a final r. But Jim Dwyer and Jim Gosger and Jimmy Schaffer don't work, as there's nothing jumping above or below the line in the last name to represent a y or a g or an f. I'd think Met Hunter could get this in two seconds. no, JCL is right, it's definitely Seaver.
  21. soupcan wrote: I'd also think that any Met fan worth his salt could recognize a Seaver sig pretty damn quickly. Nah, not if you're really not into that memorabilia sorta thing. (as I'm not)
  22. geeze. someone should work on Tom with his Ts. but hah..that's pretty much jackpot for an unknown sig on a Mets jersey right?
  23. is that a J,..or a D? Jui? dui? dw? can I tweet it?
  24. Is is a shot in the dark from deep in the recesses of my memory banks somewhere.. wasn't Mickey Mantle? (Or Joe Dimaggio? I mix those two up sometimes..) born in Fargo? Yankee orgins to this contest? edit: Either it's not recorded or I'm mixing him up with either Chris Coste or Gary Serum. edit again: checked wikipedia. it was Maris. who apparently doesn't make the baseball-almanac page and Serum doesn't make the Fargo wiki page.
